Geoffrey Burgon's Six Studies were originally composed for solo cello. This transcription, authorised by the composer, has involved some changes in register and notes due to the different timbres and response of the viola and the considerable difference in physical size of the two instruments. This work was commissioned by the Portsmouth Festival with funds provided by Southen Arts. The first performance was given by Julian Lloyd Webber at the Cathedral Church of Old Portsmouth in June 1980.

De Algunos Canciones de Juan de la Cruz. This work was commissioned by the BBC for the 10th anniversary of the BBC Northern Singers in 1975. 'Dos Coros is a setting for voices of two poems by the 16th century Spanish mystic St John of the Cross. St John is widely considered to be the greatest of the Spanish mystic poets, because he comes closest to expressing what is usually considered to be inexpressible - mystical experience. His poetry is all about the intense excitement of the union with God, but, paradoxically, the word God is rarely used, and not at all in the two poems set here. Another paradox is that he is able to express great serenity by employing the imagery of rushing water, flight and even drunkenness. If mystical experience is near impossible to convey in words, then maybe it is natural that many composers have taken up the challenge of conveying it in their own medium.' Geoffrey Burgon.

A chamber opera in one act for soprano, tenor, baritone and bass soli, TTBB chorus and orchestra, commissioned for the Wells 800 Celebration in 1982. Libretto by Peter Porter. Vocal score with piano reduction. Duration: c. 55 minutes. Orpheus is a Chamber Opera, or perhaps more properly might be described as an 'Opera-Cantata'. It is designed to be performed as a short opera, fully staged and costumed, or as a concert piece. Either way, its structure is dramatic, rather than reflective. It tells the story of Orpheus, probably the most familiar story in music, and en emblem of their art for composers of all periods, as a direct narrative. Since the legend is set in the world of pagan mythology, it has been lightly Christianised for its Church setting. The Aeneid has often been seen as speaking of Christ avant la lettre, and Renaissance Humanists were always willing to identify forerunners of Christian types in Classical personages: in this manner, Orpheus pursues, without undue emphasis, musical parallels with St Francis, St Cecilia and even Adam and Eve.The work is framed briefly by a prologue and epilogue. The Prologue introduces the four solo singers - Hades (bass), Orpheus (tenor), Eurydice (soprano) and Charon (baritone). It also introduces the chorus who do not only portray, at various stages, Orpheus's wedding companions, the denizens of Hell and Blessed Spirits in the Elysian Fields, but also comments on the action as it proceeds.

A Vision was written for the tenor Anthony Rolfe Johnson and commissioned by the London Mozart Players. The first performance was at the Gregynog Festival in June 1991. Geoffrey Burgon has set 7 poems of John Clare (1793-1846) and the poems that Burgon has chosen were all written whilst Clare was in Northampton Asylum. The work is scored for tenor and string orchestra. There is a prominent part for solo violin, which reflects Clare's love of that instrument and upon which he would play folk tunes and dances.

'Acquainted with Night', is a cycle of six songs, for alto and strings, harp and timpani. The texts are all concerned with different aspects of night. The first song, 'Lullaby' to a poem by Beaumont and Fletcher, seeks to evoke the 'care-charming' powers of sleep. The second, a setting of Robert Frost's 'Acquainted with the night', is concerned with the lonely world of a strange city at night and the music is characterised by an insistently repeated figure in the accompaniment. The third song contrasts the calmness of the night with the turbulence in a lover's mind - the poem is by the Earl of Surrey. 'Out in the dark' a poem by Edward Thomas, is the text of the fourth song. It is in the form of a scherzo and deals with the mystery and strangeness of night, and, as the poet puts it, the 'might' of night. It is, as the poet says, a hymn to night and the chordal nature of the accompaniment suggests this quality. This song leads directly into the last, which is in fact a reprise of the opening 'Lullaby' so completing the cycle.

Composed in 1981, this work is a setting of a sequence from the Mass for the Feast of St Thomas, found in the missal of the Hereford use. The text is a conventional hymn of praise but it is distinguished by a lively and attractive rhythm, and as this rhythm would have been lost in translation, I have set it in the original Latin. The work is in the form of theme and variations and is characterised by a gradual crescendo throughout. It begins very quietly with solo timpani and then the choir sing the theme in unison, unaccompanied by flutes, bells, timpani and lower strings.
