A work for solo violin and orchestra, commissioned by Donald McDonald for the 21st birthday of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the 60th birthday of the composer. It was first performed in November 1993 in Glasgow, by James Clark and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Maxwell Davies. The spell is one quoted by George Mackay Brown in his book An Orkney Tapestry: 'Let not plough be put to acre except a fiddle cross first the furrow.' Davies's dancing concerto imagines the fiddler following a route from field to field, from dance to dance, accompanied by a bunch of companions in the form of an orchestra. As the music goes on, so it gets brighter and livelier, moving from the dark colouring of clarinets, bassoons and strings to full ensemble with prominent brass and (solo) tuned percussion, as if the dancers as much as the fields were beginning to glow with new life. Score (miniature). Duration c. 20mins.

Lansky's Odd Moments is both a tribute to and 85th birthday present for his former teacher, George Perle, composed in 1999 for that occasion. It was written for the Da Capo Chamber Players, who performed the piece in a celebratory program, at which both the composer and Perle were in attendance. Allan Kozin of The New York Times called it an accessibly tuneful, thoroughly tonal quintet. For advanced performers. Duration: approx. 13'.

According to the composer, this carol was noted by Miss Lucy Brodwood near Sussex from the singing of Christmas Mummers called Tipteers or Tipteerers during their play of Saint George, the Turk, and the Seven Champions of Christendom. Grainger's setting of the caroll is here arranged for band by master orchestrator, Carl Simpson.

Eternal Source of Light Divine is an aria from G. F. Handel's secular cantata Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne (HVW 74). While this particular aria is immensely among trumpeters and sopranos (who generally sing the vocal line an octave above the original), Handel intended the line to be sung by an alto voice. In this arrangement for trumpet and organ, Justin Bland has kept the vocal line (now played by the right hand of the organist) in the octave in which Handel wrote it. The original notes of the trumpet part also remain unchanged, allowing the part to easily be played on both modern and baroque/natural trumpets. Although the aria was written in D major, a version in C major is also included, allowing for a greater number of possibilities of performance. For example, if an organ at A=466 is used, the C major version can be used so that the resulting performance sounds in D major at A=415.

Little Cadenzas, Canons and Preludes for Pianoforte, an album of 36 piano miniatures in all keys of the circle of fifths and in church modes, as well as two preludes by Eusebius Mandyczewski (1857-1929) that modulate through all keys, are presented here for the first time in print. Mandyczewski, who went down in music history as a Brahms friend, editor and archivist of the Vienna Musikverein, composed numerous vocal and piano works, including twelve Orthodox liturgies and two cycles of variations on themes by George Frideric Handel. The album, a birthday present from the composer to his twelve-year-old daughter Virginia, was written in the middle of the First World War and was not premiered publicly until a century later - after the manuscript was found in a Ukrainian library - at the Mandyczewski Festival in Chernivtsi (Ukraine) in 2017. Mandyczewski shows himself here as a master of the small form and counterpoint, but also as a demanding teacher - and so the pieces, once reserved for his daughter, will now be made accessible to a wider circle of young musicians to enjoy.
