Note that this is a rather complex piece that will require skilled and disciplined performers to follow their own independent line. Giovanni Gabrielis Sonata Pian e Forte verdankt ihren Namen und ihre Bekanntheit nicht zuletzt der Tatsache, dass sie als eine der ersten Kompositionen überhaupt Angaben zur Dynamik im Notentext enthält. Im Rahmen der Entstehung einer eigenständigen, von der Vokalmusik unabhängigen Instrumentalmusik um die Wende vom 16. zum 17. Jahrhundert zeugt die schriftliche Fixierung solcher aufführungspraktischer Elemente von einer gänzlich neuen kompositorischen Denkweise. Dazu gehört auch die Präzisierung der ausführenden Instrumente durch Gabrieli: zwei Trombonenchöre, die im Diskant von einem Zink bzw. einer Viola angeführt werden. Par BASSANO GIOVANNI. Diminution sur Madonna mia gentil de Luca Marenzio Luca Marenzio (1553-1599) est d'abord employé à Rome, successivement au service de deux cardinaux. Il entre ensuite en 1588 à la cour de Florence, où il prend part aux intermèdes de la Pellegrina (1589), comme compositeur et comme chanteur, puis retourne à Rome où il meurt. Il laisse des livres de motets et de chansons sacrées, et surtout un grand nombre de livres de madrigaux, de nombreuses fois réédités, qui assureront sa postérité. Le madrigal Madonna mia gentil est extrait du Primo Libro de Madrigali a cinque voci (Venise, 1580). La version ornée que nous proposons ici est de Giovanni Bassano - elle est extraite des Motetti, madrigali, e canzoni francesi, di diversi eccelentissimi auttori a quattro, cinque e sei voci Diminuiti per sonar con ogni sorte di stromenti, e anco per sonar con la semplice voce édités à Venise chez Giacomo Vincenti en 1591. Nous ne connaissons malheureusement cet ouvrage que par une copie manuscrite (D-Hs M B12488) établie par le musicologue Friedrich Chrysander en 1890, l'original qui était conservé à Berlin ayant été détruit lors de la seconde guerre mondiale. Giovanni Bassano (1560/1561-1617), après avoir été 'piffaro' du doge à partir de 1576, succède en 1601 à Girolamo Dalla Casa à la basilique Saint-Marc de Venise, poste qu'il conservera jusqu'à sa mort. Outre l'ouvrage de 1591 cité plus haut, nous conservons de lui des Fantasie per cantar e sonar (1585), un volume de Ricerca te, passagi et Cadenze (1585) bien connu des flûtistes, et divers recueils de musique vocale. Son influence sur Giovanni Gabrieli fut notable. En 1590, Thomas Watson faisait paraître à Londres ses Italian Madrigals englished, où ce madrigal prend également place.
