Exceptional singer Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947) owes his early successes to the ?songs for voice and piano? genre, whose raison d?etre he defines in his journal as follows: ?To highlight a poem, word for word but without uniformity; to emphasize its meaning without distorting it; to shine light upon one idea, obscure another and present it all in vocal, sung form; to produce a sharp, precise sensation by touching a heartstring or evoking an image - all in a well-structured and tastefully written piece?. Enhanced by an audio version attached as a download card, this anthology of songs should dispel a good many misconceptions. This is no salon miniature: L?Heure exquise radiates an infinite tenderness, exalted by the high vocal cadences of O Bien-Aimee! and C?est l?heure exquise, which surely wrought tears from the author of the verses, Verlaine. Tyndaris, the jewel of Heures latines, clears a crystal-clear space given over to the delights of slumber and of love. Like D?une prison and Cygnes, these songs do more than wet the eyes: they grip the heart..

Matthew Whittall's preface to Bright Ferment (2019): I have a complicated history with the string quartet. Actually, it's not that complicated. I spent months writing a huge one in my early twenties and hastily withdrew it after a long delayed premiere, vowing never to write another. In a typical case of karmic retribution, my fear of the form would eventually be overcome by the unrefusable offer to write the compulsory piece for the Banff International String Quartet Competition in my native Canada. The short duration requested, about nine minutes, also felt like a good way to wade gingerly back into the medium. The title was originally just a nice-sounding pair of words that surfaced in a brainstorming session with fellow composer Alex Freeman over an injudicious amount of fermented barley. When I looked it up later, I found that it was a phrase of older coinage, seemingly used more for poetic resonance than any fixed meaning. Ferment by itself denotes a state of confusion, change or lack of order. With bright, it takes on a more positive connotation with regard to society and creativity: a wild profusion of ideas barely checked by reason. (It may not actually mean that, but it describes this piece nicely, so let's go with it.) Fermentation in its trendy culinary usage is also hinted at via a recurrent percolating device of scattered pizzicati. As one may guess from the tone of this introduction, there is little attempt at gravity in Bright Ferment, the only means by which I felt I could sidestep the historical and expressive weight of the string quartet genre. Styles, gestures and moods are tossed around, cross-cut and abandoned in stream-of-consciousness fashion, connected by little except an intuitive sense of rightness in their juxtaposition. If the piece acquires depth in spite of me, it will only be because its disparate parts amplify and strengthen each other simply by being together - much like the ensemble itself. Bright Ferment was commissioned by the Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, with additional funding from the Americas Society (New York), for the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition. Duration: ca. 9 minutes.

Spanish. Text Source: Filipenses / Philippians 2:6-11, La Biblia Latinoamérica Scripture: Philippians 2:6–11.
Commissioned by the American Federation Pueri Cantores to showcase diversity within the Spanish-language choral repertoire, this advanced choral piece written for SATB voices and piano accompaniment is a setting of Philippians chapter 2, in which Saint Paul exalts Christ as the “name above all names†for having taken on human form to die on the cross. The piece is in three sections, mirroring the three-part form of the scripture passage: a gentle, stoic homophonic opening in C major, a polyphonic, somber middle section in A minor at the words “even death on a cross,†and an exuberant section in A major climaxing in the final statement that “Christ Jesus is the Lord!†For choirs looking for a musical challenge and an opportunity to showcase the choral arts using scriptural texts in Spanish, this masterful work makes for a tremendous concert piece, prelude or liturgical anthem. Listen to this piece performed at the NPM 2022 National Convention Choral Institute Concert below:.

The “Prayer of St. Francis” calls us to respond to inhumanity with humanity habitually as a movement towards peace. Opening with a dissonant cry for good will, the singers sing a series of entreaties, and the piano carries them over gently undulating quadruplets. The music flows freely till its final cadence.

Traditional Spiritual Sure to create a wonderful, thought-provoking moment during Lent, this setting provides a reflective backdrop for contemplating Christ's suffering and death on the cross. While rhythmically simple, the haunting text is fully expressed through dynamics, the inclusion of handchimes and incidental changes in tempo. Beginning and developing ensembles will have no trouble polishing this Level 1+ piece in limited rehearsal time.

Uniform choral sound, homogeneous singing with singers in similarly uniform dress. What interest does the audience have in the fates of the individual singers? How good it is that today one may act up again. When else is there time for chatting on the risers, screaming and shouting, articulating one's ignorance concerning contemporary art expressing hopes of getting a solo, for pontificating, expressing displeasure with a neighbour of telling another member of the choir that one is in love? Or at the very least, to glance at the latest evening newspaper?

Henry Wolking's The Best Dam Trombone Quintet Ever may just be! It is a fun, feel-good piece to perform and to listen to. The undulating rhythms and close harmonies produce a pleasing mood with a hint of a jazz feel. The music gives you a big hug. Here is a description of the work by the composer: In the summer of 2017 my wife and I moved to the Nevada Dam town of Boulder City. The town began as a construction camp in early 1930s for the workers of the Boulder Dam (later renamed the Hoover Dam). The dam is one of the worlds great construction projects of the 20th century and has over a million yearly visitors. My house is less than ten minutes away from the dam, and because the dam in one way or another affects everyone living in this unique Nevada town, my newest trombone quintet (composed in January 2018) is the best, well you get the picture. It is a high energy single movement work inspired by the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Ranges are fairly moderate with a high C# in the first trombone at the end. This is a fun romp for five dam fine trombonists. The 4 1/2 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Originally conceived for the ensemble Enchanted Voices, these carols for SSA voices and organ (or piano) represent the composer’s desire for the tunes and texts to be heard in a new and fresh way. Largely contemplative, sometimes set against a gently-undulating foundation, these work well for concert and church use. Sometimes ethereal, sometimes other-worldly, the pieces succeed in bringing together the ancient purity of the medieval past and the here and now. Duration 5:15.

In a four-part composition Rieks van der Velde takes us to the richly varied area surrounding the university city of Cambridge. The Dutch composer was especially inspired by the atmosphere of Cambridgeshire, the county which lies north of London. 1. The Journey. Although on arrival the area looks peaceful and friendly, the ruggedness of its inhabitants and landscape have an unmistakable influence on the music. In the course of the tour, which starts with an Allegro movement, we are shown the vitality, energy and freshness of the Cambridgeshire countryside. Short themes, swift and sudden motifs and rhythmical patterns supported by the drive ofpercussion instruments give expression to this image. The first part is concluded by two 'Calmo' movements in which the music expresses how the cathedral in the city of Ely comes into sight and is gradually approached. 2. Visit to Ely Cathedral. The famous Norman cathedral church of Ely, which was built in 1109, has attracted tourists from all over the world apart from being a place of worship and heritage site. A cornet solo introduces the contemplative mood of the composition at this point. The mystical atmosphere of the cathedral runs through this lyrical part like a continuous thread. 3. The Pub. The thirst caused by this intensive journey makes a visit to the local pub a definite must. These “public houses”, which may be open until the early hours of the morning, offer all kinds of entertainment. Drinks are served liberally and the atmosphere is lively. 4. The Journey Back. Time has flown: In other words, the moment of departure has come sooner than one would have wished. In a flashback which recaptures elements of the first part of the composition we say goodbye to Cambridgeshire in a fitting manner. Two scintillating final measures bring us abruptly back to the present. 1. The Journey. 2. Visit to Ely Cathedral. The Pub. The Journey Back.
