Sonatas - Six Pieces of Music for Large Wind Ensemble Percussion Harp and Piano by Poul Ruders (2011). Preface / Programme Note Normally when being confronted with the term ´sonata´ we tend tothink of a substantial composition for piano solo in three movements predominantly by Mozart or Beethoven. The word however derives from the Italian ´sonare´ meaning ´to play´. In the 16th. Century acomposition entitled ´sonata´ merely indicated a piece of music forinstruments as opposed to the ´cantata´ - a piece involving voices. The Italian cantare simply means´to sing´. The present suite SONATAS is a composition subtitled ´six pieces of music for large wind ensemble percussion piano and harp´. It opens with a REVEILLE a short ´wake-up call´ a fanfare opening the gate into what follows. The second movement is called PASTORALE and certainly is that a peaceful unfolding of gentlechords and sounds of a bucolic nature. Nothing dramatic happens whereas in the third movement SCHERZO the wood winds chaseeach other in a wild relay run. Then all of a sudden the mood changes and we are plunged rightinto the middle of the darkest night. In the NOCTURNE unnervingly subtitled sinistro the low rumbling chords in the trombones and prickly outburst in oboes and horns form the sinister back drop to this wordless Grand Guignol. Which merges seamlessly into PANORAMA an unfolding festive almost pageant like ´sound-scape´of dancing rhytms and jubilant scales. Slowly however the tempodrops and the former boisterous body of sound is being slowly and mercilessly ´skeletonized´ - and at the end there is nothing left. RETRAITE - 'the last post'. Cradle Hymn, a Christmas lullaby with imagery of Mary and her infant, was written for the Nidaros Cathedral Girl's Choir and conductor Anita Brevik in 2010, and later arranged for SATB and TTBB chorus. The Lyrics were written by Isaac Watts (1674-1748). This arrangement was written by Christian Aftreth Eriksen in 2021, commissioned by Bunberry High School, Australia. It is scored for large concert band, but is playable for smaller forces through clever cross cuing: Eb clarinet, Contrabass Clarinet, Baritone Saxophone, Contrabassson and Double Bass can all be considered ad lib. All Oboes, Bass Clarinet, Bassoons and all Horns are cross cued. A Soprano Saxophone part is provided to cover the Oboe solos, and should only be used if no Oboes are available. Par DVORAK ANTONIN. Antonin Dvorák?s impressive Stabat Mater for soloists, chorus and orchestra is probably the best-known of the composer?s sacred works. Some painful experiences in 1875 his first daughter died, and in 1877 he lost two other children in quick succession may have led to Dvorák?s preoccupation with the suffering of the Mother of God, who stands weeping beneath the cross of her son. The music enters into the different moods of the liturgical texts with great sensitivity. Nine movements in slow to moderate tempi serve as a kind of Passion meditation, before the ecstasy of a vision of the resurrection wins the upper hand at the end of the tenth movement. With our newly-publishedarrangement for chamber orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, timpani, and strings), smaller choirs now have the opportunity of performing this work without the choir being drowned out by a large-scale symphony orchestra. The symphonic character of the work is nevertheless preserved. This scoring offers an optimal balance between transparency and orchestral sound. All vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version. Te Deum, together with Ave Maria, Stabat Mater and Laudi alla Vergine Maria, is one of the Quattro pezzi sacri composed by Giuseppe Verdi between 1890 and 1898 and first released by Ricordi in 1898. According to the composer, Te Deum is the best piece and undoubtedly one of the most significant. For double SATB choir, with a short soprano solo, and big orchestra composed by 3 flutes, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 4 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 4 trombones, percussions (kettledrums and bass drum) and strings. Written for choir in unison this tale wafts shimmering melodies over an instrumental accompaniment suffused in turn with gentle melancholy and light humour. An art that speaks from an open heart.
