In Theme Park Fun! your orchestra pays a visit to an amusement park. During your visit you will experience some spectacular rides and attractions this theme park offers. The uniqueness of Theme Park Fun! is the interplay between music and(moving) images. Animations and illustrations support the visual composition (downloadable after ordering a set on www.gobelinmusic.com).Part 1: The Entrance & Parade [with animation]The opening of the park is a fact. A day fullof fun and pleasure awaits! You and the other visitors will be confronted with all the rides attractions and adventures the theme park has to offer. Which ride shall we do first?! There is so much to do and experience on this day in the park! Aparade of colorful floats and park figures is passing by.Let the fun begin!Part 2: The Haunted House [with animation]The only ride in the park that is not related to fun is the Haunted House. Here visitors will be challengedto visit a house full of ghosts creepy figures and other ominous things. The clock strikes twelve there is no turning back. Ghosts are whispering yelling screaming... Fortunately it is almost one oclock so we can leave this creepy placequickly.Part 3: The Swinging Galleon [with illustrations]What a huge pirate ship! Each time you swing back and forth you will feel that weird feeling in your stomach. When you are thrown completely into the top you will have afantastic view over the park but you can not enjoy it for long. Before you know the ship swings back the other way.Part 4: The Fairy Tale Ride [with illustrations]After all those exciting and spectacular rides and attractions it is time for a peaceful tour in The Fairy Tale Ride. Surrounded by a fairytale setting you will discover fable figures talking animals and colorful designs. Such a beauty and tranquility. Having had this experience we are ready again for thebig rides in the park!Part 5: The Bumper Cars [with illustrations]Now its time to crawl behind the wheel of the Bumper Cars! Shall we all chase the conductor?! Before you know you are hit by another visitor or you will bumpagainst someone else. In this tough ride you can prove yourself as a real driver or perhaps as a really bad one.Part 6: The Roller Coaster [with illustrations]The largest fastest and scariest ride in the park ... we shoulddefinitely do the Roller Coaster! All together in the train the over-the-shoulder restraints are lowering... be ready to ride. The train leaves the station and is heading for the big lift hill. It will be very scary when the train reaches the topand the train will be plunged down the first drop! Loops corkscrews and other spectacular coaster elements will follow... Before you know it the ride of your life is over. Shall we ride it again?!Part 7: Leaving the Park [withanimation]Unfortunately everything comes to an end.

Momentum is Jamie Cullum?s sixth studio album, due for release on 20th May 2013. Produced, in part, by Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, Adele) and Dan The Automator (Kasabian, DJ Shadow), Jamie approached this record in a completely different way to his previous LPs, for the first time using DIY home demos as a blueprint for the majority of its tracks, and writing the majority of the songs himself.
This artist approved, album-matching songbook features all songs from the album transcribed for piano and vocal with guitar chords by Cullum's musical director, Tom Richards, together with three bonus tracks as featured on the deluxe album version. / Variétés / Partition / Agrafé /

Par MC NEFF STEPHEN. My research for Banished began with a small group of students during a Trinity Laban co-lab period in 2013, though the idea goes back over 30 years when I first saw Steve Gooch’s Female Transport and stored the idea of adapting it as an opera until the right opportunity arose. I have been involved in opera for a long time and it has always been a frustration for me that while there is an abundance of female talent (particularly so in conservatories and colleges) there is a noticeable lack of challenging roles available for young women. The roles most often undertaken are maids or innocent girls, compliant wives or tomboys. Not that the problem is necessarily confined exclusively to young women, but where good roles exist, the women are all too often merely passive or victims. Things happen to them rather than them making things happen. They are unable to influence their circumstances and are usually resigned to their fate. Worse still, they are often judged in some way responsible for what happens to them, culpable even because of their looks, their way of life or a streak of independence. Just think about Mimi, Carmen and Violetta (to name only three on a long list). All these characters die, and their attempts at individuality contribute to their demise in some way that they have no control over. With some exceptions female characters in opera are too often sad, mad or bad. Redressing this balance and taking advantage of the richness in vocal talent is only one reason to write an opera reflecting the reality of a group of strong women who work things out for themselves. The transportation of people to Australia at the beginning of the nineteenth century is not a particularly well understood part of history beyond a sort of folk myth. What were the circumstances, who were the people and what happened to them? Opera does not exist to completely answer these questions, but it can focus on the women as individuals and help tell their story. (All the women named in the opera actually existed.) My approach has to been to put the women’s narrative centre stage and, in the confines of an oppressive, dangerous environment go with them on their journey as they survive or sink. The demands on the women are huge. At every turn they are oppressed by their jailers, the system that brought them here and their own low expectations. They have to work out ways to overcome these odds. We discover them through their music in solos and ensembles, sometimes reflective, at other times boasting about their lives a petty criminals and trying to establish status and pecking order. Alongside this I have used references to music of the time to create another reality built on larger ensembles and choruses. This is a sort of collective consciousness aware of loss, longing and context – even of a broad political dimension to the realities of Transportation. Despite the acute awareness of their circumstances in these ensembles, there is also a resilience and strength that transcends the individual stories. (+)
John Luther Adams' Four Thousand Holes for Piano Percussion (Vibraphone and Orchestra Bells) and Electronic Aura. Composed in 2010 and dedicated to Stephen Drury. Duration: 32 minutes 30 seconds.'Four Thousand Holes is my own effort to re-appropriate and reclaim for myself something of my own musical past. For the first time since my days as a rocker I've chosen to restrict myself to major and minor triads - thosemost basic elements of Western music (both pop and classical). But I've tried to assimilate them fully into my own musical world. Approaching these simple chords as found objects I've superimposed them in multiple streams oftempo to create darker harmonies and lush fields of sound. In recent years I've been fortunate enough to form a close musical partnership with Stephen Drury. Steve's extraordinary gifts inspired me to exploreexpansive forms and textures (similar to those of my orchestral music) with only one or two performers In essence Four Thousand Holes is a concerto. To begin I composed the score for the electronic tracks. Steve recorded all ofthe individual chords that occur in the score. I took these recordings time-stretched them reversed their envelopes and knit the reversed sounds together with their original decays. The resulting waves of sound I layered intoten independent tracks to create the virtual 'orchestra'. Next I composed the Piano part articulating the peaks of all the electronic tracks simultaneously - a feat of coordination that demands considerable virtuosity from thepianist. Finally I composed another multi-layered part for metallic Percussion sounds that I think of as sparks emanating from the Piano. In Four Thousand Holes strong musical currents fall and rise again andagain as points and lines are juxtaposed with heavy hammered chords. The mix of 'live' and electronic sounds blurs the distinction between musical figure and ground. As in much of my recent music I conceive of the entire piece

A number of the most popular chart songs are included in First Hit Songs which have all been simplified so that pupils working through parts two to four of the Easiest Piano Course are able to play some familiar and famous tunes. The songs are ordered progressively so as pupils learn more challenging theory and techniques they can put that intopractice by getting to grips with more advanced songs. All the songs included here are well-known hits with most being modern chart-toppers. The 15 hits in this songbook include Piano-based ballads like Tom Odell's Real Love and Sam Smith's I'm Not The Only One as well as more upbeat pop tunes arranged for Piano like Style by Taylor Swift and Meghan Trainor's Lips Are Movin'. Other hits like See You Again Hold Back The River Blame It On Me and Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud are included along with two all-time classics Love Is All Around and We Are The Champions. Popular songs like these enable pupils to enhance their learning by using the techniques to play songs they know and love helping them to develop deeper musicality. La Muette

Make the silence talk'La Muette knew how to make the silence talk like no one', ...
(+)
Make the silence talk'La Muette knew how to make the silence talk like no one', writes Djavann in his book (La Muette, © Flammarion 2008). Those words deeply touched me for they express one of the most beautiful metaphors in music. Through the lines of discourse, beyond words, I was listening to the silence of 'La Muette'. A rare and intense listening which joins the same internal listening I use when I'm writing my score. I was listening to La Muette, I decided to write a new piece to make the silent voice of La Muette told by Chahdortt Djavann sound through music. Choosing the extracts The text put in music is composed of short extracts from Djavann's story. I focused on this woman's portrait, who conquers her freedom through silence in which she forms a strong love relationship with her niece Fatemeh on the one hand, and the Uncle on the other hand. 'She had made her silence become her art of living, her freedom' writes Djavann. The extremely dramatic tension, the flow of the singing in Persian language, and the oppression in relation to the Iranian context are trying to underline the independent beauty of that woman who resists and exists without a voice. Story A young 15 years old Iranian girl named Fatemeh is in jail. Waiting for her death sentence, she writes the story of her aunt on a small notebook, 'so that someone remembers La Muette and myself'. The young teenager was raised by her aunt who becomes mute because she decided to stop talking on a dark day of her own childhood when she was interrogated, never to tell THE truth. An aunt whose silence makes even more fascinating, haughty, with an insolent look, cigarette at her lips, bare-footed and without any scarf on her head. 'La Muette' had made her silence become her art of living, her freedom. Around her, women start to talk, even considering her mad, for only a mad person could act this way. Fatemeh loves her mute aunt unconditionally, that is how she wants to become a woman, by being like her, fascinated by her silence and her excesses. La Muette embodies a figure of Freedom and makes us remember that in some countries, the woman who won't be submissive risks capital punishment. She will be hung. Following this beautiful text by Chahdortt Djavann, 'La Muette', a powerful text, stiff, tensed, without any lyricism nor compromises, which takes place in Iran under the Mollahs' regime. Persian: Phonological material / Compositional material Djavann's story is written in French. I asked Baharé Khadjé-Nouri to translate the text into Persian, and worked with her on pronunciation, accentuation, metric and the structure of the language, and I thank her again for that. I spent a long time having some people reading me the text in Persian and through listening I immersed myself in that sound universe. From this linguistic material, the beginning of the piece starts with the constitution of a tank of sound objects which will constitute parts of the compositional material. To compose the phonological tank, I worked on writing the pronunciation that lies at the origin of every possible vocal composition, writing the tone as well as the 'percussive - resounding' aspects of phonemes, multiple uses of fricative consonants or sibilants. Finally I used the vocal treatment of the phoneme through modes of play in relation to sprechsang: sing -inspire, or -expire, -blow, -chanting, -whispering, -spitting, -speaking. But a purely phonetic analysis of the vocal structures composing the sung part would reduce the word to its mere phonetic entity. The phonological material then constituted a compositional material by giving to the sung word its semantic entity. Form of the piece To strip the drama off every narrative element, at least of the discursive and linear character of the story, I first re-organized parts of the text extracted from the whole book in an order fitting the form I wanted to give to the piece (except for the beginning and ending which are kept in their linear forms). I imagined Fatemeh in jail, whose memories bounced between the four walls of her cell: recurring musical material, re-injected in an obsessive way, disjointed and contrasted, continuously modified each time, bouncing from one sequence to the next in another state. The piece is divided into 5 sequences, between each of them is an instrumental interlude with a voice-off, the voice of the present in the cell that contrasts with the singing voice of the sequence, evocation of memories of La Muette (sequence 1: preamble, sequence 2: portrait of La Muette, sequence 3: La Muette and Fatemeh, sequence 4: La Muette and the Uncle, sequence 5: epilogue). Electroacoustic setupFor this piece, I wrote the electroacoustic parts myself at the same time I was writing the instrumental parts. The electroacoustic setup is here considered as a whole instrument, an instrument added to the 12 others electroacoustic instruments and to Donatienne's voice. The electroacoustic sounds are divided into three types: - Samples from the singer's voice and instruments of the TM+ ensemble transformed - The narrator's voice Baharé Khadjé-Nouri in Persian, original version or transformed - Extra-musical sounds As for the synchronization between the acoustic and the electroacoustic scores, we will use for the first time an innovative application developed by Frédéric Bevilacqua and Bruno Zamborlin, not to follow the moves as we did it in StreicherKreis (my string quartet created in November 2008), but to follow the voice and orchestra. Thus, we will be using an 'audio-following', which constituted a first. This setup of recognition and following will allow the synchronization between instrumental and electroacoustic scores in a musical and precise way. Concerning the interactivity between performers and device, it will all be in real-time. Characteristics of the musicians' sound will 'interpret' what comes out of the speakers. The musicians will define the settings of the sound transformations, in terms of space, transposition, tone or length. This new piece expresses a message through the choice of subject that goes beyond strictly music. For me, it is important that both the composer and writer can invest their work into problematics which they're confronted to because they are immediate witnesses. / Soprano Et Percussions

Orig. version: WH30939 Programme note The Poet is the fourth of a series of seven compositions named after Karen Blixen's collection of short stories Seven Gothic Tales. My musical gothic tales are written for very different ensembles - THE SUPPER AT ELSINORE is a saxophone quartet THE OLD CHEVALIER is for bass trombone and piano THE MONKEY is a chamber orchestra work - but they all share musicalmaterial in a criss-cross of contextual references reminiscent of Blixen's narrativ ecomplexity: Themes and motivs from onepiece appear in others in new and surprising shapes and combinations.Karen Blixen's The Poet is about a retired counsilor who always desired to be an artist - once he even met his ideal Goethe - but knows that he is completely without talent.Instead he patronizes a young gifted writer to the extent of shaping himself into a father figure his protege depends upon. When a young italian widow arrives and the writer predictably falls in love with her and she with him the councilor arranges a marriage between the widow and himself in order to break the young poet's heart - only in the best intention: to make him into a real poet. But the writer decides to take his own life and the widow crushes the councilor's head with a heavy stone crying ”You poet!”As he dies helpless to the will of destiny the councilor realizes that fate has wrought a story greater than any he could have invented. The Poet isn't 'about' anything. The music is inspired by the artistic content of Blixen's short story - it's emotionalism dramatic construction atmosphere period and setting - but unfolds in time and musical space in ways that are completely independent of the story's narrative progression... except one might say that the violin kills off thepiano while the baritone saxophone goes drown

'When somebody tells me that they wish they could improvise I usually reply 'If you really want to you will'. This may seem quite a hard line to take but if the will to improvise exists there is no reason why anyone with however limited a command of their instrument (or voice) cannot realise their ambition the degree of proficiency attained obviously varying with individual abilities and above all the amount of personal effort. As much time as possible should be allocated to ear-training. There are many cassette courses available on the market - such as the David Burge course (for both perfect and relative pitch development). Also the development ofharmonic knowledge should be on-going and to this end use of a keyboard of some kind is imperative. Don't worry how bad a pianist you are - you can only improve. An improviser draws upon any sources available to enhance his/her vocabulary - a popular song for instance or a Chopin waltz or the modes of Messaien or the pandiatonicism (this being simpler than it sounds) of Stravinsky. It is very healthy to expose yourself to a wide spectrum of music - you will probably find this will lead to the development of other skills such as musical analysis or composition - which of course may well be of material use at times when engagements are thin on the ground and one can turn to arranging or writing a jingle or even a film score. All the pieces in this book have a theme followed by a quasi-improvisational section and a reprise of the theme. If you wish feel free to invent your own improvisation or play the written one or perhaps use the first four bars of the written one as a springboard. Please feel free to imbue these pieces with your personality making alterations and decorations as you feel them.' - Tony Coe
