John Tavener 'Agraphon' arranged for soprano, timpani and strings. Commissioned by the Athens Concert Hall, first performed on 29th October 1995. The music contains two symbolic ideas - the first being the opening series of intervals which appear to be inexhaustible in their multifaceted symbolism, representing the music of the spheres. If the angel's song is indeed one of knowledge, they could not choose a better theme of harmony. And then there is the apparent evil of the endless series of spiralling sixths and sevenths, falling without apparent hope of redemption through an eternal geometric series, down into a hellish realm. Agraphon must be performed with great intensity, literally at the breaking point of intensity and petrification. For the voice the style alternates between European and classical Indian singing; for example, the passage beginning on page 12 is entirely semi-improvised. The singer must listen to many examples of classical Indian music, or else be trained by a master. The music ends fiercely at the incomprehensible clash and union between the Divine and the human. Duration 22 minutes. Instrumental parts are available on hire only.

John Tavener 's Coplas , composed in 1970, for unaccompanied SATB Choir. ' Coplas is a short anthem for voices and tape. It belongs to a much larger work called 'Last Rites' which I have been thinking about for about a year. It is based on the mystical idea of St. John of the Cross which obsesses me - the more I live the more I must die. Hence the deliberately static nature of Coplas. In once sense Coplas is a prolonged decoration of the 'et sepultus est' cadence from the Crucifixus in Bach's Mass in B minor. In another sense I think of it not so much as my music but a way of listening to Bach's music. ' - John Tavener.

The world premiere of A New Commandment , a piece by the late Sir John Tavener specially commissioned for Summer Fields, was in February 2014 at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford. This work was possibly one of his very last commissions before his sudden and untimely death in November 2013. COMPOSER'S NOTE I have set these words from St John's Gospel many times, because I feel them to be among the most profound and therefore key texts in the Christian faith. This setting falls into three sections with an ABA structure. A New Commandment is dedicated to my mother-in-law Mary, but it is also an unspoken tribute to the Spanish master Victoria who has inspired methroughout my life..
