Johann Strauss, Jr. (1825-1899) wrote the KAISER-WALZER, Op. 437 (EMPEROR WALTZES) to celebrate the toast of friendship that Franz Joseph I extended when he visited Wilhelm II in 1889. Fritz Simrock, his publisher, diplomatically suggested the name of the waltz so that it could be attributed to either emperor, depending on the circumstances of each performance. Originally titled HAND IN HAND, its first performance took place on October 21 of that year in Berlin. The Kaiser-Waltzer was composed in 1889 in honor of a visit by Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph to German Emperor Willhelm as a toast of friendship. The waltz contains several beautiful melodies and Randall Malmstrom's 3 1/2 minute arrangement for advanced performers fits the regal character of the 5-part low brass ensemble perfectly. Instrumentation is for 3 tenor trombones, 1 bass trombone and 1 tuba.

Busoni tones down the colors of his orientalisms and totally eschews sentimental lyricism. His strengths lie especially in the scintillating, unfathomable characters and in a music that hovers in an ambivalent manner between brightness and darkness, sadness and humor, danger and harmlessness. This work of art makes its references clear: Gozzi's play about the murderous princess is peopled with familiar commedia dell'arte figures, and one is not quite sure whether this mixture of fun and danger gives a more relaxed feeling to the activity on the stage or whether it does not do precisely the opposite, adding the irreconcilable perspective of a gondola trip on the edge of a bottomless gulf. Busoni is more faithful to Gozzi than Puccini and thus to the gracious levity that hovers over the excesses of the action.
