Andrej Makor currently a master student of composition at the Conservatorio Cesare Pollini in Padua has already won numerous international composition prizes. The highly respected works by the artist born in Slovenia in 1987 are performed by renowned choirs ensembles and soloists at prestigious competitions and festivals among others. His composition O Emmanuel for which he was awarded the 2nd prize of the International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016 is based on the original Gregorian chant of the last of a total of seven so-called O antiphons which are sung at the seven Advent days with the Magnificat at Vespers in anticipation of Christmas Eve.Makor's score which follows the traditional motet form but is structured in a more modern form begins with the original Gregorian chorale. Its melody runs through various voice groupings in the course of the piece. In the concluding 'Domine Deus noster' whose pressing character becomes obvious in the constantly recurring triplet figurations of the middle parts the work imbued with the idea of eternity reaches its extremely impressive climax.

Return To Avalon is scored for two flutes one doubling Piccolo the other doubling Alto Flute.In the mid-thirteenth century over 200 000 Cathars were murdered in the South of France 'Avalon' by forces of darkness and ignorance. The Cathars were European Buddhists who believed in loving each other that we are all equal in the eyes of God non-revenge vegetarianism and that women could be priests. They also believed in reincarnation.In answer to threats and bullying many of them chose to be burnt alive rather than be forced to follow teachings they believed to be untrue.People say that the Cathars never came back. People saythat they died in vain. But I believe that they are wrong I believe that the Cathars did come back to create a Church of light outside the constricts of religion but through the arts through music poetry and prose.'Return to Avalon' is the story of two great Cathar flute players who rise from the ashes of the Montsegur massacre to return and baptize the world into the truth of the eternal through the beauty of sound and honesty of expression. I imagined these 'Sons of the light ' playing this piece and letting its message of friendship and brotherhood echo out over the mountains.'Return to Avalon' begins with 'The Last Song' a 13th century Cathar melody echoed on alto flute then explores an idea I first used in my 1993 flute concerto the idea of orchestrated digital delay.The second movement 'Human flame' on piccolo and alto is also based on a medieval theme but takes it further and further out until finally it burns up into a huge fireball.In the third movement 'Sons of the light return to Avalon' the two flutes reappear Phoenix-like from the ashes leading and learning from each other. Eventually the flutes become inseparable as they interweave together at speed leading us to a higher truth that we are all brothers and sisters equally loved by God.Phenomenal flautist Samuel

It was a chance visit to a second hand bookshop in Nottingham that set me on the trail of Rossini's now well-known Duetto for cello and double bass. But the story begins earlier than that. In the 1960s I was studying the double bass at the Royal College of Music with Adrian Beers who was at that time principal of the English Chamber Orchestra on the front desk of the Philharmonia Orchestra and a member of the Melos Ensemble of London (then one of the leading ensembles of the world). I was working on the 'Dragonetti Concerto' as most young players do and I wanted to find out a bit about it. My teacher said he thought the autograph manuscript might be in the British Library which was all the encouragement I needed to secure a pass to the Reading Room so I could go and see for myself. There sure enough I found a large collection of Dragonetti's autograph manuscripts together with other bound volumes relating to his life. The papers had been lovingly collated and annotated by Vincent Novello one of Dragonetti's closest friends then deposited in the library before his departure to Italy in 1848 two years after Dragonetti's death. One of the volumes included a lot of letters about various engagements and music festivals copies of orders for strings Dragonetti wanted from Italy details about paintings he wanted to buy and numerous invitations to private functions. The manuscript of the 'Dragonetti Concerto' of course wasn't among the papers we now know it to have been written by Edouard Nanny a century or so later. One name that came up regularly in the documents was that of Sir George Smart. Smart had been a violinist in Salomon's orchestra and had played for Haydn at his London concerts in the 1790s. As a child he had learnt much about music from his father who had in turn been present at many of Handel's rehearsals when he was preparing some of his major works for the first time. Smart was also a fine keyboard player becoming organist of the Chapel Royal in 1822. As a conductor
