Late in his life, composer J. Rosamond Johnson (Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing) submitted to his longtime publisher, E.B. Marks, a list of songs that would comprise a volume of his best early popular songs written with his pre-1910 partner Bob Cole and his brother, James Weldon Johnson (Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man). That list was never put into print...until now. Featuring an introductionby Dr. Thomas Riis (Just Before Jazz) and several rare photos, this new compilation is the latest legacy offering from the Marks archive, which contains a rich heritage of turn-of-the-century African-American, and thus distinctly American, pre-jazz-era popular song. Includes: Ain't Dat Scan'lous * Big Indian Chief * The Big Red Shawl * The Bleeding Moon * Congo Love Song * The Countess of Alagazam * Fishing * I Don't Want to Be No Actor Man No Mo' * I'll Always Love Old Dixie * I'll Keep a Warm Spot in My Heart for You * I've Got Troubles of My Own * The Katy-Did, the Cricket and the Frog * Lazy Moon * Lit'l Gal * Louisiana Lize * Lovely Daughter of Allah * Ma Mississippi Belle * The Maiden with the Dreamy Eyes * Mudder Knows * My Heart's Desiah is Miss Mariah * My Castle on the Nile * Nobody's Lookin' but de Owl an' de Moon * Oh, Didn't He Ramble * The Old Flag Never Touched the Ground * On the Road to Monterey * The Pathway of Love * Roll Them Cotton Bales * Save It for Me! * The Spirit of the Banjo! * Sugar Babe * Two Eyes * Under the Bamboo Tree * When de Jack O'Lantern Starts to Walk About * When It's All Goin' Out, and Nothin' Comin' In * Who Do You Love?

Daedalus Remembers is the third part in a trilogy called 3 for Icarus. Daedalus was Icarus' father and a famous craftsman. He once forged a magic sword for Peleus which had a property of making its owner victorious in battle, and he also created the labyrinth of King Minos of Crete in which the Minotaur (half bull, half man) was imprisoned. The second part of the trilogy is entitled Minotaur Games after Troy games, a kind of labyrinthine dance involving cords (Ariadne's thread?). At one point in the myth Daedalus and Icarus are also imprisoned in the labyrinth. They escape by means of wings which Daedalus has made from feathers and wax. Sadly, despite his father's warnings, Icarus flies too close to the sun in a fit of hubris, and the wings melt, causing him to plunge to his death. Daedalus alights safely on a beach in Sardinia, and after he has collected his thoughts remembers his son's fall and scenes from his own past life. Have the gods paid him back for the death of his nephew Talos, whom Daedalus killed in a fit of jealousy by pushing him off the top of a temple in the Acropolis? Daedalus rants and sorrows - dark memories nag persistently. Daedalus Remembers is scored for solo cello with flugelhorn, two horns, percussion, cimbalom, harp, three violas, four cellos and two double-basses.

Claude Debussy wrote his two books of piano Preludes late in life, between 1909 and 1913. The 12 short pieces in each book display a rich variety of styles, moods and emotions almost a summing up of his compositional output and each has its own evocative title. The Girl with the Flaxen Hair is the 8th Prelude in the 1st book and popular for its emotional depth, despite its technical and harmonic simplicity. Indulge your band with this delightful arrangement. Mahámátar is written for Oriental or Middle-Eastern female voice, distant boys' voices (in a vast acoustic), tubular bells and muted strings. The music is an invocation to the Great Mother Mahámátar in Sanskrit, and to the Theotóke (God-bearer) in Greek. Originally written to accompany a film by Werner Herzog which deals with South American Indians who travel for many miles on their knees to venerate the miraculous Ikon of The Mother of God of Guadalupe. Mahámátar may be performed by a solo voice or alternatively the melody could be played by a solo cello, with decorations and improvisations by the singer.
