12 Easy Zoological Pieces. Par RAE JAMES. In 'Zoo Time!” for clarinet and piano, James Rae has imagined how our friends in the zoo might perform on the dance floor! This has inspired some delightful pieces such as 'Tiger Tango”, 'Rhino Rumba”, 'Cobra Calypso” and many more. But it's not just fun for pupil and teacher alike - musical styles are explored even at this early (Grade 1) stage and the student will be inspired to try and interpret the music to portray the animals as vividly as possible. All the notes are below the break. Attractive, teacher-friendly piano accompaniments are provided, which include chord symbols for further musical possibilities. 'Zoo Time!” follows on naturally from James Rae's 'Child's Play” (UE21700) where all the beginners' notes are introduced one at a time, just as in a standard tutor book.
- Easy pieces, all in a comfortable range, to inspire the young beginner
- The piano accompaniments are designed to enhance the pieces and provide support for the clarinettist
- Musical styles are explored even at this early stage
- Illustrations can be downloaded for free for colouring in / Niveau : Très Facile à Facile / Recueil / Clarinette et Piano

Later Elementary Level-Description: This contains three movements similar to those that might be found in a classical sonatina. The first movement is in ABA' form with a medium tempo. The second movement has a lyrical cantabile melody. The third movement is a fast gigue-like movement. Purpose: The student may learn the variations in sound and mood produced by movements indicative of a classical sonatina. Suggestions for Instruction: 1) Have the student try the right hand first observing correct fingering. Practice tapering 3-note slurs that end with staccato. Practice playing crescendo and decrescendo then add the left hand. 2) Allow the student to play the right-hand melody with appropriateshading and breathing. Introduce legato pedaling. Teach following the line. 3) Point out how the left hand mimics the chords in the right hand hand-over-hand. Have the student practice the 3-note slurs in the right hand for a 'loud-soft-soft' type of sound. Work to make a distinction between f and mf. Have the student pedal with the harmonic changes. Key: C Major

Composed during the summer of 1988. Commissioned by The Norwegian Brass Band Club First performed in the Grieg Hall¬? at the 10th Anniversary Concert for the Norwegian Championship Bergen February 1989. EBML conducted by Michael Antrobus. The work is important for me because it was my first piece to be played outside Norway. Black Dyke/David King performed it and did a recording of it in 1991. The composer: In the original score I quote a Swedish bishop (Olaus Mangnus) who lived in the 15th century. He travelled around Scandinavia and drew maps - very important historic material. When he came to the north of Norway (where I come from) hedescribed the wind from the north as Ciricus: (something like) Worst of all winds is Circius that revolves(?= turn upside down) heaven and earth. (Well not a good translation I¬?m afraid). The fast sections reflects the mighty winds from the north. In the middle section I borrowed a folksong-like tune (by C. Elling a norwegian composer). The text (by Kristoffer Janson) tells about old times when the fishermen used open boats: they had to put their lives in the hands of God. De opening en het slot van dit werk beschrijven 'Circius' de wind die hemel en aarde verwoest. Het middendeel is een bewerking van het Noorse volkslied 'The fisherman's speech to his son'. De inhoud van het lied komt overeen met Circius. De vader verzoekt zijn zoon de krachten van de natuur te trotseren maar bovenal te respecteren. Een kort doch spectaculair concertwerk dat het gehele orkest in de greep heeft.

According to Ravel himself the strange title of the little Piano piece composed in 1899 ?Pavane for a dead princess? should not be ascribed too much importance. He chose it mainly because he liked the alliterationit contained. At the same time he did however agree that the music evokes ?a pavane that a little princess once might have danced at the Spanish court?.Following its premiere in 1902 the simple but effective piece gainedunparalleled popularity not least reflected in the numerous arrangements made of it one of which for small orchestra was by Ravel himself. We are publishing the work in its original version as a fitting addition to our worksby Ravel.

Together Apart/Apart Together for Saxophone Accordion and Double Bass was composed by Karsten Fundal in 2004. Written for and commissioned by Poing. Programme note: This piece is the 3rd in a row of pieces which concentrates on a rhythmical relationship that continues to puzzle me. It is actually two relationships embedded. The 1st is a pattern that is very inspired by the composer Per Nørgård who in the beginning of the 90ies got very preoccupied with the idea that you can have rhythms that never meet. This happens if you start a rhythm like a quintuplet on the beat and one like a triplet off beat. This can with different rhythms give very intricate interwoven patterns that gives the illusion that they are not cyclic. In my case I use the two ratio five to seven in the described way. This rythms have the strange property that if you take each 5th note of the seven and each 7 note of the five you get a ratio almost identical: 49:50. This is very intriguing as you can use the possibility of letting them be equal or the possibility of letting them interfere. In the first case you get an interlocking rhythm which is ?smooth?; an equal rhythmic pattern. In the second case you get a similar situation but where one of them is one short after 50 of the other ones which results in a disturbing almost equality but not quite. Therefore the title: because when I use the unequal rhythm I put the two layers in a similar tone register or a similar way of playing and when I use the equal one I put them a part tone wise speaking. This is a very technical description but it is very hard to put it in more wide terms but you might compare it with driving in a train and looking at two fence rows behind each other: if the poles are placed exactly halfway between each other you will experience an illusion of a fast jump if there is enough distance between them as a result of the perspective. If they are placed in a way that there are almost the same numbers of

24 Etudes-Caprices Op. 41 by Delphin Alard (1815-1888) are excellent study material. Alard, the violin teacher of Sasasate, composed these studies in the 24 keys. Due to their musical variety, melodic beauty and cantabile voice leading, they are much more than technical studies; they might be described as character pieces in the best sense. The studies meet the two demands principally made on this genre: to both cover specifically certain technical tasks and be appealing as a music piece so that the musician likes to play them. Contenu - C major: playing three and four-part chords - playing in high positions on the G string - A minor: string-crossing - shifting with the left arm - spiccato bowing - G major: alternating double-stopping (melodic line)-solo line - E minor: cantabile melodic line - ornamentation - D major: double-stopping - harmonics - ricochet bowing - B minor: consistent legato bowing - expressive melodic line alternating with accompanying figures-A major: double-stopping (mainly in sixths) - three-part chords - ricochet bowing - F minor: legato study - E major: double-stopping (mainly in thirds) - C minor: playing a melody on one string - tremolo - B major: waltzes- lively dance-like patterns - G minor: ornamenting notes - long legato bowing - Gb major: legato string-crossing - Eb minor: lightness and elegance of tone - staccato - Db major: dotted rhythms - Bb minor: alternating solo melodic line- double-stopping - Ab major: Caprice for bringing out tone quality when playing legato - F minor: restless tied notes - lyrical lines in the middle section - Eb major: continuous tremolo accompanying figures - C minor: ricochet bowing - legato string-crossing - Bb major: alternating solo line- double-stopping - G minor: double-stopping with syncopations - F major: double-stopping dotted notes in horn-fifths - D minor: Bolero in virtuoso style - double-stopping - staccato bowing - lyrical middle section

My musical gothic tales are written for very different ensembles - THE SUPPER AT ELSINORE is a saxophone quartet - but they all share musical material in a criss-cross of contextual references reminiscent of Blixen's narrativecomplexity: Themes and motivsfrom one piece appears in others in new and surprising shapes and combinations. Karen Blixens The Old Chevalier begins with an old man talking to a youth about obl igation and passion. The old man tells a story about a beautiful woman who wanted tomake her husband jealous and cheated on him with a young man who admired him. Afterdiscovering the truth the young man meets a prostitute on her very first job. The girl is an innocent trading favors for shelter. The young man falls in love but she remains obliviousto his passion. She leaves after their encounter without emotional involvement. Many years later the young man - the old man telling the tale - recognizes the girl in a beautifulskull he's holding in his hand. The Old Chevalier isn't 'about' anything. The music is inspired by the artistic content of Blixen's short story - it's emotionalism dramatic construction atmosphere period and setting - but unfolds in time and musical space in ways that are completelyindependent of the story's narrative progression... except one might say that the trombone makes love to the piano and at the very end - just like the old man in the story is left contemplating its remains. Par KINKEAD JONATHAN. Every guitarist dreams of owning a handmade instrument, but for most, the cost is likely to be prohibitive. The alternative - building your own fine guitar - is not as difficult as you might imagine, given some skill, patience, and the expert guidance of a master luthier. Every step of construction is fully covered, from choice, selection, and preparation of woods, to consideration of size, bracing, and tonal qualities. Each step of the building sequence is clearly photographed in color, with variations to the standard design shown to enable you to personalize your instrument as you make it. Briston, England-based Jonathan Kinkead has been building guitars for nearly 30 years. His craft is born out of experience and intuition rather than a strict following of technical detail. The resulting beauty of form and distinctive tone have earned him his reputation as one of the world's most respected independent luthiers. / Date parution : 2023-05-06/ Livre / Livre

Par PART ARVO. 'In principio' takes its words from the Gospel of John 1:1-14 and puts them into a five-movement form. This work, as in all of Pärt's music, is governed by a strict formal design, with the clarity of the musical structure corresponding to that of the Latin text. The first movement (vv. 1-5) and the fifth (v. 14) are limited to two opposing formal elements: a static, syllabically articulated A-minor chord, and its timbral and tonal opposite, a fanfare-like figure that expands with each new section, growing in loudness and returning to its beginning after traversing all twelve keys.
The second movement (vv. 6-8), devoted to John the Baptist, is conceived as a powerfully moving single-voice monody. The central third movement (vv. 9-11) is not only the longest but the one whose message Pärt specially emphasised by repeating the words three times - something he had never done before in his vocal music. He evidently did so to send a signal directly to each and every one of us. The fourth movement (vv. 12-13) seems to begin ex nihilo, growing slowly but with an ineluctable pulse in a mighty procession. The fifth movement (v. 14) constitutes, in combination with the first, the formal and expressive frame of the composition, albeit in mirror reflection.
If the chorus in the first movement statically pulsates while the orchestra proceeds dynamically through the circle of keys, these roles are reversed in the fifth movement. Thus, the expanding thrust given to the orchestra in the opening movement is now focused entirely on the text of the chorus. (Wolfgang Sander, translation by J. Bradford Robinson)/ Répertoire / Chœur Mixte [SATB] et Orchestre

player's score-Programme Note TRIBUTE TO BALI is a 5-6 minutes piece for 3 percussionists but also the original version for piano solo under the title ?Many returns to Bali? might be called a percussion piece (the piano being a percussive instrument too at least since Bartok?s ?Allegro Barbaro?) referring in sound and attack to Balinese gamelan music. In gamelan orchestras the fastest layers of music are played by high pitched instruments the slowest layers by instruments with deep octaves. The same idea is present in my piece and gives the music a Balinese touch although no Balinese themes or motifs are used. The motives and rhythms are my own brew especially the snake-like rhythmcalled ?Pischop? which played in many layers at the same time avoids the strong beats in a bar. The music might be described as a ?Tribute to Pischop?. It also refers to my piece ?Returns? for guitar (1976) composed after my first visit to Bali in 1975.The piece was composed as a hommage to the cultural rich civilization of Hindu Bali after the bombings on the island in 2002. Percussionist Jacob Weber has with my accept arranged the original piano piece for percussion trio for his debut in 2005 at the Queens Hall at the Royal Library Copenhagen.Per Nørgård (2005)

for Concert Band-If you have a large percussion section Credo might be a perfect piece for your young band. It is very carefully scored and cross-cued so that almost any size band can perform it. Composed in sonatina form it is highly energetic and tuneful and the bass instruments have lots of fun easy things to play. Like Prairie Winds Festival Credo is very safely scored with Piccolo 2nd Oboe 2nd Bassoon Contra-Alto Clarinet 3rd Trombone and Double Bass parts optional. Ranges are very reasonable: the only sixteenth notes in the piece are in the snare drum.

?Mors et vita? death and life. This antithesis opens a stanza of the ancient 11th-century Easter sequence Victimae paschali laudes where life and death are locked in mutual struggle. Zsigmond Szathmáry?s 12-minute composition of 2015 commissioned for the Freiburg Minster interprets this primal human experience with mighty explosions of sound. Here the organ can show what it?s capable of: its grandeur and strength are fully exploited but not at the expense of soft and gentle contrasts. Typical of Szathmáry?s compositional style is the alternation of seemingly improvised recitative-like writing and passages in strict rhythm. Time and again the composer takes upelements from the church hymn Christ ist erstanden von der Marter alle (Christ the Lord is risen again).
