Silence! Singers at Work is a wry collection of drawings about the everyday experiences of singers. Anyone who sings, or has sung, whether on the world's greatest opera stages or in the local choir, will instantly relate to the illustrations.
Internationally-acclaimed opera singer and recitalist Joyce DiDonato has collaborated with the author on the drawings and has written a preface to the book. Silence! Singers at Work makes a perfect gift for anyone who is, or who knows, a singer.
About the Author
Born in France, Emmanuelle Ayrton studied at Parsons School of Design and worked as a graphic designer in New York and later in Paris and Amsterdam. She discovered classical singing at the age of 35 and now regularly performs with various choirs and as a soloist. Combining her two passions, she decided to depict and share the many tribulations singers undergo - this book of humorous drawings is the result.

Debussy composed the Sonate for cello and piano in Normandy, in July 1915. At the age of 53, distressed by the war and afflicted by an illness that prevented him from composing, he resumed his work with the writing of this Sonate. Though his intention of assertinga French style in the tradition of the great masters of the 18th century, Debussy repeatedly affirmed the absence of a programmatic idea in the sonata: “I have written nothing but pure music. [...] in the old form, so flexible (without the grandiloquence of modern sonatas)â€. This volume is part of “Musique françaiseâ€, a series designed for students and teachers as well as professionals; it offers historical introduction and performance suggestions by the notable cellist Emmanuelle Bertrand.

Alan Lee Silva's Northwestern Skies?is lyrical and fresh,? with his signature open and expressive style. Young string orchestras will sound rich and full with this sweeping composition.
From the opening fanfare to the final ensemble gesture, Northwestern Skies is an engaging musical journey with expressive ensemble phrases and challenging section features. The A theme at m. 9, a recurring heroic statement, provides an opportunity to develop solid tone production and intonation in sustained forte passages. The B theme at m. 17, enters quietly and features singing, legato lines and delicate accompaniment. The connected countermelodies in both the A and B sections should be balanced under the main melody. More instrtuments are added to the melody in m. 25, building to the return of the A theme in m. 33.
The lower strings carry the C theme in m. 49, supported by tutti figures in the upper strings. All sections come together in m. 56 to a ritardando into the Maestoso section, setting up a grand ensemble statement in m. 57-58. The moving legatolines at m. 59 and the aggressive figures at m. 61 propel the piece to its final build.
The Coda section at m. 65 begins with a variation of the B melody in the violas and then the violins over a dominant pedal point in the lower strings. Commanding tutti statements of the A theme at m. 69 end the piece with power and excitement.

This Negro Spiritual was made popular by the Golden Gate Quartet in the 1930s. Willie T. Johnson, the lead singer of the group, is the father of Kevin P. Johnson the arranger of this version. The composer, like his father, uses rhythm in exciting new ways to deliver Negro Spirituals to contemporary audiences. The text of this spiritual has been interpreted in many different ways over the years. Here's a popular interpretation of the text. One for the little bitty baby born, born, born in Bethlehem: This refers to the infant Jesus. Two for Paul and Silas: This verse honors Paul and Silas who went on many missionary journeys to spread the teachings of Christ. Three for the Hebrew children: The three Hebrew children could be Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Four for the four that stood at the door: Many people interpret the four to be the four writers of the Gospel books - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, though this does not explain the part about standing at the door. Five for the gospel preachers: The five are Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Peter. Paul is already mentioned above, in line two. Six for the six that never got fixed: Could this mean the sinners who never change their ways? Seven for the seven that went up to heaven: The seven in heaven could be the seven stars in Ursa Major or the sevenfold spirit of God or the seven early Christian churches or the seven stars in the right hand of Christ mentioned in the Revelation. Eight for the eight that stood at the gate: This could refer to the eight people who entered Noah's ark (Noah, his wife, their three sons and their wives). Nine for the nine that dressed so fine: This could refer to the nine orders of Angels in heaven. Ten for the ten commandments: This refers to the ten commandments given to Moses. Performance notes: Swing the 8th notes Djembe drums should be played freely with flexible precision The rap can be optional The ending solo can be sung down an octave and can be changed to match the ability of the soloist. Do not clap louder than you sing If doing choral movement on the piece, pay attention to detail synchronizing movements as much as possible. While the rap is words in rhythm, if adding one is not possible for your performance, consider a spoken word of your own choosing Have fun!.This Negro Spiritual was made popular by the Golden Gate Quartet in the 1930s. This piece was commissioned by Matsudo Citizen Wind Orchestra for their 30th anniversary concert and premiered by the band conducted by Kenichiro Hasunuma in July 2009. This piece is typical of Satoshi Yagisawa in that it depicts a magnificent spectacle. This one is set in ancient Egypt and is based on the story depicted in the famous film The Ten Commandments (1956, directed by Cecil B. DeMille). One day Moses, who was raised by the rich royal family, found out that he was originally Hebrew. The Hebrews had been forced to live as slaves. Ramses, the prince directly descended from the Pharaoh, envied Moses' strength and popularity. After internal argument Moses decides todeliver the Hebrew from the Pharaoh's tyranny and escape from Egypt with them. The music starts with brilliant royal fanfare and depicts magnificent architecture, the Hebrew people forced into hard labour, and the slaves escaping from the Pharaoh's tyranny. At the climax they are at crisis point, trapped by the sea. Moses waves his staff and the miracle happens; the sea parts and Hebrew people successfully escape. Following on from Perseus - A Hero's Quest in the Heavens, this work Moses and Ramses is another piece written in the dramatic style favoured by Satoshi Yagisawa.

Song of Friendship was commissioned by the Concert Band of Jumonji University, Saitama, Japan and their conductor, Yutaka Nishida. The commission marked the 50th year of Yutaka Nishida’s involvement with bands as a player, conductor and radio presenter. The ceremonial Song of Friendship opens with an extended fanfare, largely featuring the brass section. This leads to the main theme, which develops slowly until it is played by the full band. A change of key signals a contrasting central section containing a quiet woodwind chorale, which grows until the return of the triumphant sounding main theme. Elements of the opening fanfare then close the work.

Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Mörschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead’s special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career. The village ofMörschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer’s Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written, at Steven Mead’s suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz.

Like the Eagle, We Soar and Rise was commissioned by Yuying Secondary School Concert Band and Yuying Alumni Association for the 2010 centenary of the school’s foundation. The piece was named by a friend of the composer named Steven Phua, who originally suggested commissioning a new piece to Satoshi Yagisawa. The piece furthermore takes its name from the text of the Yuying Secondary School song. This composition is based on three different concepts: the first one demonstrates ‘The founders’ passion for education’; the second concept illustrates ‘Hardship in war time’; the third one ‘To the future’ describes the inner strength people find to overcome struggles. Thispiece concludes with a fanfare, which is the sound of hope that leads to a brighter future in a positive direction. The world premiere of this piece was conducted by Faizal Bin Othman, who is one of the leading educators in Singapore, and was performed by the Yuying Secondary School Concert Band.
