This short, melodious piece with its charming instrumentation displays a typically Christmas colouring through the use of a pedal point and a Sicilian rhythmic figure.

Rheinberger began work on his second Symphony during his visit to Italy with his wife in 1874. He was commissioned to write it by an orchestral society in Florence - an indication that his reputation had already spread throughout Europe. The autograph score contains a poem by his wife Fanny, which in four sections expressed the moods of impressions of the visit which seem to underlie the symphony. Contemporaries praised particularly the beauty of the Adagio. The work is here presented for the first time in an edition based critically on the sources. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5008700.

In 1724, Bach composed the cantata Herr, wie du willt, so schicks mit mir [Lord, as you will, do unto me] BWV 73 for the third Epiphany Sunday. Like in some other cantatas from the first annual cycle, the opening movement contains a part for corno which would in fact have been unplayable on an instrument of that era - probably also a reason why Bach allocated this part to the organ in a repeat performance (both variants can be performed using the Carus edition). The unusual choral movement, interrupted by recitatives, is based quite substantially on a short four-note motive which is introduced by the horn; at the end of the chorus, the choir sings it to the words Herr, wie du willt [Lord, as you will] - an avowal which also quite substantially characterizes other movements of the cantata. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3107300.

Puccini's first known sacred work was composed during his school days at the Istituto Pacini in Lucca. It was first performed there in 1877. The text was a hymn to the Patron Saint of Lucca which was probably written by the composer himself. The work was so popular that by 1880 it had received three further performances, though it was also inserted in the Messa a 4 voci, after the Credo. Thereafter it disappeared from the music world and was only first rediscovered in the 1990s. Since, with the exception of the lack of a solo tenor in the piece, it is identical with this one in the Messa, for this reason it would seem only natural to perform these two works together.

The Carus critical new edition is the very first edition of the Grabmusik which is based on Mozart's separate autographs for movements 1-6, and 7-8, respectively. The fact that the final movement also contains two horn parts which have never appeared in print is an absolutely sensational discovery. Now the work may be again performed using Mozart's last, original instrumentation. Score available separately - see item CA.5104200.

Telemann's Missa brevis on the chorale for Pentecost Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott is one of his eleven surviving Latin Missae breves based on church hymns. The motet-like composition calls for a mixed choir accompanied by a basso continuo, reinforced by colla-parte instruments. However, the mass can also be performed solely with an organ accompaniment. The Psalms inspired Mendelssohn throughout his working life, and, aside from a cappella settings, he left behind five great orchestral Psalms. Schumann assesed in 1837 that Psalm 42 was the highest point that he [Mendelssohn] reached as a composer for the church. Indeed the highest point recent church music has reached at all. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4007200.

In 1812 Schubert probably composed one of his earliest settings of the Mass, although only this Kyrie for a Mass in D minor was written down. A fragment of a Credo from 1811 has also survived. Score and part available separately - see item CA.7004000.
