The thirty or so settings of the Mass by Johann Michael Haydn (Joseph's younger brother) are masterpieces of their class, and were greatly loved during his lifetime. As part of its Urtext complete edition Carus now presents the Missa Sancti Cyrilli et Methodii. This composition of 1758 is an early work, still written in the baroque stylistic tradition of the southern German region, Out it also reveals subjective inspiration which separates it from many mass settings by Haydn's contemporaries. With this mass dedicated to the Slavic apostles Cyrill and Methodius it is possible that Haydn applied for a position in Brno and it actually appears as if the 21-year-old composer wanted to present a masterpiece demonstrating his skills. This mass is published here in the first edition. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5401300.

This rich arrangement of a popular traditional American melody is aimed at the younger band who wish to showcase their development of a warm sound and expressive phrasing. The palette of colors changes throughout to allow each section to shine as the melodic responsibilities are passed around the various sections of the ensemble. As the piece ebbs and flows from subtle splashes of light to dramatic presentations of the melody, the overall effect is contemporary and picturesque in its essence while remaining accessible to less experienced bands. While performance markings are indicated, the arranger would encourage directors to flavor their interpretation of the score with personal choices of expression, flexibility of tempo and dynamic contrast.

Poul Ruders Polydrama (Manyfold Event) for cello and orchestra, is the last part of a drama trilogy otherwise consisting of Dramaphonia for piano and 11 instruments and Monodrama for percussion and 32 instruments. In this abstract drama, the individual listener is left entirely to his own associations. The composer has compared polydrama with the gradual defoliation of a big tree: the vigorously growing organism is attacked by a swarm of locusts until, finally, nothing remains but bare branches in a landscape of long shadows; a solitary, singing bird remains, however, like a streak of hope in an increasingly dark and pessimistic universe.

Bruch's evergreen for the first time in UrtextThanks to the premiere performance by Joseph Joachim and to the release of the printed edition in 1868, Max Bruch's Violin Concerto no. 1 zipped onto the road to success and has never left it since. Yet from the preface of the BreitkopfUrtext edition, one can infer how things looked like behind the dazzling facade. After the world premiere, the composer struggled for the definitive form. He wrote 3, 4 development sections in the finale, and sought the advice of celebrated virtuosi such as Joseph Joachim and Ferdinand David to revise the solo part. And after all this was done (see above), Bruch suffered under the work's popularity: Have I written nothing but this one concerto? The new Urtext edition is based primarily on the first edition. Next to the main source and the autograph, what is supremely interesting is a solo part with entries by Joachim and Bruch. It confirms how intensively the two men collaborated on honing the final form of the work.

Composed in both traditional and blended choral stylings, this cantata weaves the historic symbolism of both the Lion of Judah and the Lamb of God into the Christmas story. Through original songs and traditional carols, singers and listeners are reminded that this story is not just an event in history, but a living story that still impacts the world today. Narration, solos, congregational participation and optional children's voices, along with gorgeous orchestrations by Keith Christopher, all work together to make this service a time of both celebration and worship. Songs include: Overture/Sing Christmas!; And So We Wait; It Came upon a Midnight Clear; Who's the Little Baby?; Sleep Little Lion, Sleep Little Lamb; Where Is Peace Tonight?; In This Moment; Angels from the Realms of Glory; Carol of the King.
