The first comprehensive German-language catalogue of Tchaikovsky's works follows the 2006 Russian catalogue of works with regard to layout and count, taking into account its research results as well as those of the Tchaikovsky Handbook of 2002 and older documentations on the history of the works. As a concise compendium, the volume is aimed at both experts and music aficionados. The detailed list of musical works and the survey of composition plans not executed are followed by the musico-theoretical, feuilleton-style and other literary works by Tchaikovsky. The volume provides the most important facts on the works' genesis and transmission history, lists the main sources, instrumentations, first performances and first editions, names the dedicatees (whose biographical details are mentioned in a separate index) and provides quotes and information on returns of the composer to earlier works or on their reuse in later compositions. Such information is completed by biographical information on Russian, English and German secondary literature, particularly on the two publication series of the Tchaikovsky Society.Synopses and a detailed list of the complete editions as well as various indexes facilitate using the volume and accessing major editions. An appendix with performance dates from 1865 to the last concert conducted by Tchaikovsky himself on 16/28 October 1893 and major posthumous performances reflect the development of the international Tchaikovsky reception as well as the dissemination of individual compositions.

Among the most frequently performed and well-known of P. I. Tchaikovsky's (1840-1893) works, The Year 1812, Solemn Overture, Op. 49 (more commonly known as the 1812 Overture) was written in 1880 to commemorate the 1812 defeat of Napoleon's invading French army by the Russians. Despite the composer's lack of enthusiasm about the project at its inception, claiming that he wrote it without any warm and loving feelings, Tchaikovsky acknowledged later that he did well in its composition, saying I absolutely do not know whether my overture (The Year 1812) is good or bad, but I rather think it is the former (pardon my immodesty). It premiered on August 20, 1882, in Moscow at the Art & Industry Exhibition, Ippolit Altani conducting. Famous for its use of cannons in the Finale, the Finale also calls for the inclusion of a military brass band, which is labelled as open instrumentation in the original. This edition by Martin Schmeling spells out specific instrumentation options for the banda. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2+EH.2.2: 4.2+2.3.1: Timp.Perc(5-6): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Banda ad lib [0.0.0.0: 4.2.2.2: Perc(3-4)].

This complete edition, which is the first outside Russia, of the almost fourteen-year correspondence between P. I. Tchaikovsky and the music-loving patron (and wealthy widow of a Baltic railway entrepreneur) N. F. von Meck represents for German-speaking readers and music historians an indispensable primary source on the life and work of the greatest Russian composer as well as on his environment, while, at the same time, reflecting the political, cultural and social situation of the Russian Empire from the perspective of two privileged, educated and regime-loving subjects. The life of the large families Tchaikovsky-Davydov and von Meck, the unpleasant consequences of the composer's unhappy marriage, faith and religion, literature, philosophy, the reception of earlier and contemporary Russian and European music, fine arts, foreigntravel, political, economic and social conditions - even farming (in Brailov and Kamenka/Verbovka, the Ukrainian estates of the von Meck and Davydov families) and many more are the topics of this correspondence between two related and yet so different personalities who, as agreed, never met in personal conversation and yet talked to each other in lively, often confessional speech. The texts of the letters in the present edition (whose planning dates back to the 1950s), with the added contrasting excerpts from letters of Tchaikovsky to other persons, such as his trusted brothers Anatoly and Modest, have been revised according to the new Russian Complete Edition by Polina Vajdman (Celjabinsk 2007 ff.). Various introductions, accompanying texts and overviews as well ascomprehensive indices (one of them systematically by subjects), together with numerous explanations and notes at the bottom of the pages, make it easier for the reader to find his/her way through the more than 1,200 documents (281 of which are in Volume I). Volume II of the edition, which is also available for subscription, is scheduled for publication in autumn 2021 and Volume III one year later.

Volume 7 of the Tchaikovsky Studies combines two important studies not published in German until now on Tchaikovsky's way of working as can be gathered from his manuscripts. In her thesis published in 1988 in Russian only, Polina Vajdmans, the archivist of the Tchaikovsky Museum in Klin, gives an overview of the handwritten sources, notes, sketches and drafts of the composer, thus providing a fascinating insight into his 'workshop'. Thomas Kohlhase, the editor of the Tchaikovsky Complete Edition and one of the foremost experts on this subject, adds to it the documentation of his editorial work on Symphony No. 6. The result is a remarkable volume which presents two ideally complementary points of view from different perspectives.

The aim of the edition is to present the composers enormous legacy as it is known today, as exhaustively as possible. Every musicaltext published in this edition is an outcome of the comprehensive analysis of extant sources realized by the scientific editor of the respective volume. According to several sources, P. I. Tchaikovsky himself was aware that the changes and amendments, he enteredinto his scores, would be of great importance for his works' future performers. The present project's important scientific objectives include the fixation and thoroughly verified reproduction of all the changes made by the composer, so that the scholars and musicians of today could perceive and realize the author's creative ideas in all their entirety.

Structurally, this quartet uses the more standard classical forms, but using musical themes that are distinctly Russian. Ths first movement is in sonata form. It's first theme is fluid, and the second is initially stated by the alto flute against rich harmonies in the other parts. These are then developed and restated in the recapitulation, before ending with a high-spirited coda. The second movement is based on the folksong 'Sidel Vanya', a traditional song from the Ukraine. The song is interspersed with highly expressive melodies, played twice over a staccato accompaniment. The third movement, marked 'Scherzo' has the robust, rhythmic character of a Russian peasant dance. The central trio pits the three upper instruments playing complex syncopated figures over a drone in the bass flute, before a repeat of the scherzo closes the movement. The Finale features two themes, an exuberant dance and a song of Slavic soulfulness. Both these themes are developed many ways before a sudden stop in the music. After a tiny, slower section, a whirlwind coda brings the music to a close.
