Return To Avalon is scored for two flutes one doubling Piccolo the other doubling Alto Flute.In the mid-thirteenth century over 200 000 Cathars were murdered in the South of France 'Avalon' by forces of darkness and ignorance. The Cathars were European Buddhists who believed in loving each other that we are all equal in the eyes of God non-revenge vegetarianism and that women could be priests. They also believed in reincarnation.In answer to threats and bullying many of them chose to be burnt alive rather than be forced to follow teachings they believed to be untrue.People say that the Cathars never came back. People saythat they died in vain. But I believe that they are wrong I believe that the Cathars did come back to create a Church of light outside the constricts of religion but through the arts through music poetry and prose.'Return to Avalon' is the story of two great Cathar flute players who rise from the ashes of the Montsegur massacre to return and baptize the world into the truth of the eternal through the beauty of sound and honesty of expression. I imagined these 'Sons of the light ' playing this piece and letting its message of friendship and brotherhood echo out over the mountains.'Return to Avalon' begins with 'The Last Song' a 13th century Cathar melody echoed on alto flute then explores an idea I first used in my 1993 flute concerto the idea of orchestrated digital delay.The second movement 'Human flame' on piccolo and alto is also based on a medieval theme but takes it further and further out until finally it burns up into a huge fireball.In the third movement 'Sons of the light return to Avalon' the two flutes reappear Phoenix-like from the ashes leading and learning from each other. Eventually the flutes become inseparable as they interweave together at speed leading us to a higher truth that we are all brothers and sisters equally loved by God.Phenomenal flautist Samuel

Flûte ou flûte à bec et clavecin ou orgue ou piano Ce recueil s'adresse aux musiciens débutants, jouant d'un instrument mélodique (flûte à bec soprano et / ou alto, flûte traversière, violon, hautbois) ou d'un clavier (clavecin, piano, orgue), désireux de jouer ensemble un répertoire varié pour voix mélodique et accompagnement, constitué de pièces du XVIIIe siècle et de musiques traditionnelles. Nathalie Rotstein-Raguis, flûtiste à bec et Zdenka Ostadalova, claveciniste, ont enseigné plusieurs années au conservatoire de Chilly-Mazarin. Leur expérience pédagogique et leur collaboration musicale étroite les ont amenées à constituer un répertoire adapté au niveau des jeunes élèves de leurs classes. Piano Reduction including solo part. Par DENISOV EDISON. The catalogue of Edison Denisov's works includes 16 concertos. It was a genre to which he returned time and again throughout his life, from the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra of 1972 to the Double Concerto for Flute, Clarinet and Orchestra of 1996. In Denisov's music the role of the soloist, or rather the protagonist, is extraordinarily important, not so much for its virtuosity as for its confessional character. The solo part is a monologue distinguished by poetic diction and a very personal message from the composer. The dramaturgical conception of the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, a reworking of the Viola Concerto of 1986, draws on traditional sonata form, thereby reaffirming the ubiquitous classicism in Denisov's thought. In this late work, we find all the typical features of his style: sinuous melodic lines layered into dense contrapuntal textures, and an interplay of orchestral colours, with pure sonorities contrasting with complex mixtures of sounds. It is a perfect dramaturgy that governs the evolution of the music to the very end. The first movement assumes the role of a sonata-allegro, with the standard formal sections of exposition, development, recapitulation and coda. The second movement is an Adagio for strings. The third takes the form of a little contrasting intermezzo that introduces both new thematic material and a new range of colours. Here tunefulness gives way to pointillism enriched with sonic effects. The only movement with a virtuosic solo part, its nervousness and inner tension set it worlds apart from the second and fourth movements that surround it. The fourth movement assumes the traditional form of a final set of variations. It is the dramaturgical and semantic heart of the concerto. The theme of the variations is Franz Schubert's Impromptu in B-flat major, op. 142, which in this case is 'born' from the celesta as the product of a dodecaphonic string cluster. This finale represents Denisov's homage to his great mentor, Schubert's music being for him a symbol of eternal and universal beauty. 'The attentive listener', Denisov stressed, 'will recognise that the Impromptu theme is already suggested very slowly in the course of the three preceding movements, not only thematically, but also psychologically. That's what makes the appearance of the Schubert theme sound so natural.' The variations relate to the variation genre less in their form than in their spiritual and conceptual metamorphoses.
