One could see icecold princes and ladies of the court weep when he played an Adagio. Tears even fell from his own eyes onto his violin while he was playing, reported an eye witness about the violinist Pietro Nardini, whose works for string instruments were hardly less celebrated than his emotional playing style. Once popular examples of light string quartets from the early classical period are available here in a reliable and fundamentally revised reprint based on the first edition (Florence, after 1770) and on a contemporary copy. The additions willfully added by Wilhelm Altmann in his edition (1937) have been eliminated and many irregularities corrected.

Odelettesis the title of a cycle of poems by the 19th-century French writer, Gérard de Neval. In his work, Trois Odelettes, Jacob de Haan set three of de Neval’s poems to music for soprano voice and concert band: Une Allée du Luxembourg describes a fleeting moment of love; Espagne is a typically sounding ode to Spain; and Chanson Gothique describes the joy of life itself.

‘Galea et Bellum’ was commissioned by the Excelsior Schraard music society (Friesland, the Netherlands). The work tells the story of a rare helmet that was discovered in a church in the Frisian village of Schettens in 2015. It uses the hymn ‘Ah, how fleeting, ah how insignificant’ as a leitmotif.

Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 is a work which has both fascinated and perplexed musicologists and performers for many years. It forms by far the larger part of the composer's first significant publication of sacred music, entitled: Of the most blessed virgin a Mass for six voices for church choirs, and Vespers for more voices with several sacred concertos suitable for princely chapels or apartments. By the time this publication appeared, Monteverdi had been in the service of the Gonzaga court at MantUrauffuhrung for at least 18 years, and he was seeking a change of employment, so that the dedication of the volume to the reigning pope, Paul V, may be interpreted as a form of self-advertisement. Originally issued as an Urtext study score, the edition is based closely on the extant printed source, the set of partbooks published at Venice in 1610, and retains the original note values, key and mensuration signatures.

Jonathan Harvey (1939-2012) was a British composer who studied at St Johns, Cambridge and Princeton, and who later taught at various universities and conservatoires across Europe and North America. His psychedelic work Laus Deo has become a brilliant showcase for 20th century Organ music. Commissioned by Simon Preston in 1969, it was supposedly inspired by a dream in which an angel played the main themes to him on an Organ: Harvey said he finished the piece within 12 hours of waking from the dream. It has since become known for its ear-piercing dissonances and exciting cluster chords.
