This work's four movements were inspired by the four Ariel poems of T.S. Eliot. The poems are entitled Journey of the Magi, A Song for Simeon, Animula, and Marina. Colorful organ registrations, late twentieth-century musical language and references to other organ works and chant melodies are employed in this musical representation of Eliot's poetry. The poems mark, in part, Eliot's conversion experience to orthodox Christianity. The spiritual theme of T.S. Eliot Impressions is that of a journey from darkness to light and from despair to hope. A tour-de-force concert calibre work of some twenty minutes in length. Detailed notes by the composer are included in the publication and are critical to the understanding and appreciation of this extended work.

Adolf Busch performed around the world both as a solo violinist and with his Busch Quartet, founded in 1912. In 1944 Busch emigrated to the U.S. where he met, at the occasion of a performance of Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, the Russian-born musician Simeon Bellison. Stimulated by his playing, Busch wrote the rousing Divertimento Op. 62b shortly thereafter. The humorous, entertaining character of the work in six movements relies on historical genre models. The fusing of the three distinctive sound colors is achieved in a special manner by Busch.

Modest and humble, this is how the old man Simeon is described; he who recognizes the fulfillment of his life, as he takes the new-born Jesus in his arms in the temple and praises him as the light to enlighten the heathen. Matsushita's setting of this scene is portrayed sensitively and, accordingly, is simple and primarily homophonic. The women's voices are set in a more comfortable range and are treated melodiously. Thus the composition can move in a very relaxed manner, flowingly, meditatively. The work is entirely tonal, without any modernisms. Important words are emphasized through the use of third relationships. The almost minimalistic piano accompaniment proceeds both independently from the choir, yet supports it and adds color which lends the work a traditional as well as a clearly contemporary character. This first choral piece can be performed by soloists or by a small choir, making it easily accessible to any girl's or women's choir.

Through imaginative poetic metaphors in the narrative and engaging yet wonderfully accessible music, Choplin leads us on a unique journey to reveal the Christmas story. The familiar components are all there--the visitations of the angels, the startled excitement of the shepherds, the shimmering guiding star, the worshipful reverence of the three kings. Pepper was also inspired to include the poignant chronicle of Simeon, whose greatest desire was to live long enough to personally witness the coming of the promised One, thus fulfilling the prophecy of long ago. Heaven's Child is a transforming presentation, taking us deeply into the mystery and awe of Christmas and into the eternal significance of that perfect union of heaven and earth--the divine and the human.

The baroque cantata libretto by Erdmann Neumeister focuses upon the aged Simeon in the Temple, who desires to leave this world and is longing for the hereafter. Telemann's setting is appealing through its poetry, warmth and ardor, and through the exemplary balance of its overall form. The two chorales which begin and end this seven-movement work are fashioned with particular artistry and care. Formally, the center and heart of the work is a motet-like choral movement to the words Selig sind die Toten, die in dem Herrn sterben (Revelation 14:13) - Also suitable as a cantata for Eternity Sunday, and for funerals and memorial services. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3910800.
