Originally written for string quartet, this fantastic characteristic piece from Glazunov is a welcome addition to the string orchestra repertoire, as arranged by Deborah Baker Monday. Well-suited for the more advanced ensemble, it contains excellent musical opportunities and the chance to play the music of a prominent Russian composer. Deborah's setting stays very true to the original, but enhances it for use by the full ensemble. Alert your contest/festival music committee to this worthy new piece for high school string orchestras.Alexander Glazunov (1865–1936) lived during a very transitional period of Russian music history, active as a composer, conductor, and teacher. He was a part of the Romantic school of Russian music following in the tradition of Tchaikovsky, like his fellow composers Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov.During his years at the conservatory he instructed many students who chose to pursue the modern trends set forth by Debussy. Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and even Prokofiev took instruction from Glazunov. Although they considered him old-fashioned, he was remembered as a stabilizing influence during transitional times.Glazunov’s music stayed within the category of Russian Romanticsm: nationalistic with classical formality. His list of works includes numerous symphonies, concertos, piano and vocal works, and chamber works including seven string quartets.Op. 15 was first given the title “Suite†(a collection of dances), and after a friend’s recommendation he changed the name to “Novelettesâ€. The five movements are of contrasting style, but beautifully reminiscent of their particular themes:I. Alla SpagnuolaII. OrientaleIII. Interludium in modo anticoIV. ValseV. All’ UnghereseThis movement is very well adaptable for string orchestra. The original string quartet moodis light, using harmonics and pizzicato, but there are forceful sections which allow for strong sectional playing (especially with the cello and bass orchestral sound). There is very much interesting melodic material offered for all instruments which lends itself to a fantastic string orchestra arrangement. Conductors will find material in all sections which provide greatopportunities for rehearsal. The form is a large ABA with a D.C. al fine, but the sections are not square by any means. There is lots of energy and momentum in the material of both sections, as well as a modalcharacter which gives the music an exotic sound. Bowing patterns abound in all sections formore great teaching opportunities.

Carter Pann’s Richard and Renée was written as a gift for two musician friends of his, Renée Kershaw and Dick Floyd. The first movement, “Renée’s Reply,†is a musical portrait of the time the composer spent with his friend in Italy. According to Pann, “the music strives for a poignancy inspired by this new event in their relationship accompanied by a backdrop so beautiful it defies words. A writer/composer (anyone, for that matter) cannot live on the Amalfi Coast and remain unchanged, unmarked.†The second movement, “Floyd’s Fantastic Five-Alarm Foxy Frolic,†is in a playful ragtime style, with an ending that the composer describes as “over the top.†Duration: 13’.

The “cat and mouse chase” has been a part of folklore and popular culture since the time of pharaohs in ancient Egypt. Over the ages, the chase has served as a metaphor for the suspenseful and sometimes alternating relation between hunter and hunted. In the modern age, the story has been played out hundreds of times in popular animated cartoons, often accompanied by a musical score representing the energetic spirit of the chase with lively twists and turns, sudden surprises and tongue-in-cheek music. In this spirit of playfulness and suspense, Robert Spittal has created a marvelous work that is both entertaining and exhilarating. Duration: 6:30 (Grade 4) Recorded by the University of North Texas Wind Symphony – Eugene Migliaro Corporon, conductor

Sharkova brings a third selection from Gavrilin's massive work Chimes to better choirs. Sunset Music features a consistent bell-like 5/4 rhythm in the lower voices, with a simple and lovely ringing melody in the higher range. The music builds to a forte clanging, before dying away into silence. Text is onomatopoeic syllables (din don don or a sustained bom, etc.), and the optional (although recommended) oboe part is available as a free download from the publisher's website.

Franz Joseph Haydn's famous melody from the second movement of his “Emperor Quartet†(String Quartet, Op. 76) was the basis for the national anthem of Austria for more than a century and is frequently heard in hymns, anthems and alma maters worldwide. In this celebratory extended fanfare, composer James Curnow skillfully weaves this majestic melody into a work which is both exuberant and energetic. Recorded by the Cobb Wind Symphony (Marietta, GA) – Alfred Watkins and Robert Cowles conductors, premiered during their performance at the Midwest Clinic, December 2018. Dur: 4:25.

Written for the late Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 1983, Desert Forests is one of the most successful of Brant's spatial works for conventional-sized symphony orchestra. The score mandates that the higher woodwinds (piccolos, flutes, oboes, clarinets) be stationed in a balcony at the back of the hall and the trumpets and trombones in boxes or balconies on opposite sides of the hall. There is also an optional improvised piano-obbligato. A recommended seating diagram for the stage instruments (also unusually arranged) is included in the score and was used to great effect in the performances conducted by Kurt Masur with the New York Philharmonic in May 1994. This extraordinary work expands the idea of bitonality and spatiality as a structural device to create a fifteen minute exercise in ecstatic polyphony, inspired, according to the composer by a visit to a forest of saguro cactus in Saguro National Monument, near Tucson, Arizona. Complete performance materials are available on rental.

'Dramaphonia' for piano solo and 11 instruments forms the first part of a trilogy of solo-concertos, the remaining two being one for percussion and smaller symphony orchestra ('Monodrama') and the last ('Polydrama') for violoncello and full orchestra. All three pieces are in one movement each and may be performed together, thus presenting a vast concerto grosso of the duration of one hour and a half. Each concerto, however, stands by itself, offering its own story: having employed the word drama in all three pieces, I naturally want to imply that something is going on, a series of hidden events created by each listener's own inner theatre which enables him to stage his own, personal associations, and in the case of 'Dramaphonia', the compositorical tension alters between action and frozen panoramas. In the percussion concerto, the rhythmical progression is being constantly intensified, whereas the metric proportions of Dramaphonia tighten and loosen, like a magnifying glass being wielded in and out of focus. 'Dramaphonia' is commissioned and dedicated to LONTANO and Poul Rosenbaum.

The previous arrangement for brass ensemble and percussion by Sean O’Loughlin has become a favorite of both the Oregon Symphony and Baltimore Symphony brass players, being played at sporting events including Portland Trailblazers NBA basketball games, Baltimore Orioles baseball games, and Baltimore Ravens football games. With fanfare flourishes and colorful touches, this grand arrangement gives each section an opportunity to play the melody, making for a truly dynamic experience.

This is one of the best-known and most frequently performed works of Ferenc Farkas (1905-2000). It was written in 1961 for 4-part string orchestra (with an ad libitum double bass part), and can be performed by a string quartet. The secret of the popularity of this 4-movement composition, which follows the structure of the classical symphonies, is probably to be found in its transparent sound, the clarity of its form and its fresh, vigorous character.
