Cette sonate fut rebaptisée « sonate de la Tonnelle » par ses contemporains. Ils imaginèrent le compositeur Beethoven composer cette ?uvre à l?ombre d?une tonnelle. En 1832, plusieurs années après le décès du compositeur, le célèbre titre de clair de lune fut évoqué par le poète Ludwig Rallstab. Celui-ci percevait dans le premier mouvement de la sonate une promenade nocturne au Clair de lune, sur le lac des Quatre-Cantons à Lucerne en Suisse. The Four Hymns are in similar vein to the Five Mystical Songs (1911) although on a smaller and more intimate scale. Together with the Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis these form a succession of works displaying a strong mystical, meditative content.The first of the hymns, 'Lord! come away!', employs vigorous Purcellian recitative in a setting of a Palm Sunday text from Bishop Jeremy Taylor's Golden Grove (17th century). 'Who is this fair one?' (Isaac Watts, 1674-1748) is a dialogue for the tenor and viola about divine love. As described by Christopher Palmer, 'Come Love, come Lord' (Richard Crashaw, c1613-49) 'breathes that spirit of mystical remoteness later to inform A Pastoral Symphony?. The final 'Evening Hymn' is a radiant setting of a translation from pre-4th century Greek by Robert Bridges, notable for its contrapuntal expertise over a bell-like basso ostinato.Four Hymns is also available in the version for tenor, viola and piano (979-0-060-02852-6), and the score (978-0-85162-908-7) serves as the vocal score for use with the orchestral version. 2-CD Set-Performed by Geoffrey Applegate violin Accompaniment: Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Emil Kahn Beethoven composed this work his only violin concerto in 1806 in the same year that he composed the Symphony No. 5 the Rasoumowsky Quartets and the Piano Concerto No. 4. It was dedicated to Franz Clement who at its premiere separated the first movement from the second and third movements and fiddled some of his own works in between with the violin turned upside-down! We can assume that Beethoven never spoke to him again. And needless to say the world took this concerto to its heart as it has never left the repertoire. A magnificent piece. Contains a printed scoreand two compact discs featuring the concerto with soloist in digitally remastered stereo; then again in a digital stereo accompaniment version minus the solo violin part.

Text (sung in German): Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930).Programme note:'D´Monstrantz Vöögeli' is the main (and middle) movement of my three-movement choir suite 'The Alarming Duckling' the title of which is borrowed from a painting from 1959 by the Danish artist Asger Jorn apainting which - as this choral piece - is partly based on 'found objects': Asger Jorn painted on top of an idyllic old fashioned landscape painting with a house and trees - and he painted a very disturbing alarming duckling. It may be ugly the duckling but in any case it is most peculiar in its surroundings with spontaneous colorful wide painted feathers standing and looking dreamy beyond a birch in the golden light of the afternoon (a very big duckling indeed!) In 'D´Monstrantz Vöögeli' the dark nightly visions are unfolding with texts by the Swiss schizophrenic artist Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930). His transcending poems prose paintings and ideas inspired me for many compositions in the 1980s i.e. Symphony nr. 4 ('Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chinesischer Hexensee' - Hommage a Wölfli') The opera The Divine Circus and a series of choral works. The piece is written for 12 vocal soloists - singing whistling screaming and whispering. In 'D´Monstrantz Vöögeli' - for a choir of humans and birds - many 'found objects' are used: The tape/cd only contributes with unmanufactured birdsong - even though using full half and fourth speed so it is easier to understand and learn from the brilliant birds (especially the fantastic American Musician Wren
