Francesca da Rimini is a drama for music in two acts by Saverio Mercadante, libretto by Felice Romani; the text is freely inspired by the unfortunate events of the two lovers, Francesca and Paolo, of which Dante's Comedy (canto V) also narrates. According to some scholars, the first performance of Francesca da Rimini took place in Madrid in January 1828; however, this date is not reflected in the Diario de Avisos de Madrid, a publication that daily reserved a conspicuous space for news on the shows staged in the Spanish city: the years between 1828 and 1831 in fact do not mention the work. Furthermore, no printed libretto of Mercadante's Francesca da Rimini is preserved today – an inexplicable fact, if one admits that the performance took place. The text of the opera can be largely traced back to the one prepared by Romani for the homonymous work by Antonio Carlini (Naples 1825), which Mercadante was able to know before his stay in Spain. Following the missed Spanish premiere, the opera should then have been represented at La Scala Theater in a subsequent season, with reliability the imminent one of the 1831/32 carnival; but shortly thereafter the impresario died: thus the contractual obligations involving him were no longer fulfilled, and, for a second time, Mercadante was then forced to shelve the plans about Francesca da Rimini, put aside now for several months. In fact, the scoring – very similar to that of the operas planned at La Scala in the same Carnival period – assumes that Francesca da Rimini was destined for a theatre of great means, like few others in Italy besides La Scala. But the failure of the opera may also have been due to the presence of the part of an amoroso en travesti, Paolo, to whom Mercadante assigns a prominent role also in terms of music: in 1831 and in Italy such a solution was no longer so frequent as a few years before or in provincial theatres, and so this condition may possibly have affected the fate of the negotiations in Milan, and may explain how the composer was then unable to have the score performed elsewhere. This critical edition is based on manuscript copies conserved in the Museo internazionale e Biblioteca della Musica di Bologna (autograph score) and in the Biblioteca Histórica Municipal in Madrid (score and separate parts). $121.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks | | |

Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario) was composed in the spring of 1786 to fulfill a commission from Joseph II for performance during a visit to Vienna by the Governor-General of the Netherlands. The visitors were meant to be entertained with a short German and an Italian musical comedy during a festival arranged on short notice in Schonbrunn Palace. The choice of composers fell to Mozart and Salieri. Both pieces spoofed the theatrical practices of the day. Der Schauspieldirektor, by Gottlieb Stephanie the Younger, has a loosely-constructed plot that hinges on the vanity of opera singers and the empty-headedness of many traveling companies. Frank Lustig wants to create a new theatrical troupe, for which Herr Eiler is willing to supply money, but only on condition that his lady friend is allowed to join. In the course of the piece, appearances are made by other ladies with resonant names who want to be retained as singers and who attempt to outdo each other until reason is allowed to prevail. | Symphony No. 104 London (First Movement) String Orchestra [Score and Parts] - Intermediate/advanced FJH
By Franz Joseph Haydn. Arranged by Robert D. Mccashin. String Orchestra. FJH Str...(+)
By Franz Joseph Haydn. Arranged by Robert D. Mccashin. String Orchestra. FJH String Orchestra. Late in life, Franz Joseph Haydn wrote twelve symphonies known as the "London" or "Salomon" Symphonies. They were composed for and during his two visits to London between 1791 and 1795. It was during his first visit that he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Music from Oxford University (1791). Haydn had been invited to come to London by Johann Peter Salomon, London violinist and concert impresario. The invitation included the writing and conducting of some twenty new works as part of a dedicated concert series. Symphony No. 104 in D Major is the last of the 12 London Symphonies from which this arrangement is drawn. Despite the dramatic slow introduction of the first movement, the entire symphony reflects the great satisfaction and joyful energy of Haydn's existence during these visits to England. Score for this title: ST6097S. Extra part for this title: ST6097P. Level: 4.5. Published by The FJH Music Company Inc.

Orchestra (Study Score) SKU: HL.51489064 Study Score. Composed by Franz Joseph Haydn. Edited by Gernot Gruber. Henle Music Folios. Classical. Softcover. G. Henle #HN9064. Published by G. Henle (HL.51489064). UPC: 840126937640. 6.75x9.5x0.214 inches. The twelve “London Symphonies†comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn's symphonic oeuvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. Hailing from 1791, the Symphony in D major no. 96 numbers among the first symphonies written in and for London. The epithet given to it by posterity, “The Miracleâ€, was bestowed erroneously, for the miracle - that no one was injured when a chandelier fell during a concert - took place during a performance of a different Haydn symphony. And yet it is a miracle of musical esprit nonetheless; from the subtle relations between the motives consisting of broken triads that open all four movements, to the virtuosic shifts in mood owing to surprising harmonies, Haydn here submits a prime example of how he develops musical ideas. This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans. Mozart's little-known one-act comic opera 'The Impresario' was commissioned by the Emperor Joseph II of Austria for a winter party he was giving. The libretto by Johann Gottleib Stephanie (The Younger) is about the tribulations of an impresario trying to mount a performance of an opera so it is likely Mozart hard at work on 'The Marriage of Figaro' derived a certain wry satisfaction from setting it. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score with an English adaptation by Giovanni Cardelli.

The American Song Book contains beautiful reproductions of original sheet music of the Tin Pan Alley Era. This book places these songs in historical context and provides fascinating and amusing backgrounds to the songs. Based on original archival research. The American Song Book Volume I: The Tin Pan Alley Era is the first in a projected five-volume series of books that will reprint original sheet music including covers of songs that constitute the enduring standards of Irving Berlin Jerome Kern the Gershwins and other lyricists and composers of what has been called the 'Golden Age' of American popular music. These songs havedone what popular songs are not supposed to do-stayed popular. They have been reinterpreted year after year generation after generation by jazz artists such as Charlie Parker and Art Tatum Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. In the 1950s Frank Sinatra began recording albums of these standards and was soon followed by such singers as Tony Bennet Doris Day Willie Nelson and Linda Ronstadt. In more recent years these songs have been reinterpreted by Rod Stewart Harry Connick Jr. Carly Simon Lady GaGa K.D. Laing Paul McCartney and most recently Bob Dylan. As such these songs constitute the closest thing America has to a repertory of enduring classical music. In addition to reprinting the sheet music for these classic songs authors Philip Furia and Laurie Patterson place these songs in historical context with essays about the sheet-music publishing industry known as Tin Pan Alley the emergence of American musical comedy on Broadway and the 'talkie' revolution that made possible the Hollywood musical. The authors also provide biographical sketches of songwriters performers and impresarios such as Florenz Ziegfeld. In addition they analyze the lyrical and musical artistry of each song and relate anecdotes sometimes amusing sometimes poignant about how the songs were created. The American
