Ausgangspunkt fur die Ensemblefassung ist die Idee des Akkordeons als Blasinstrument, also Balglange = Atemlange, und die Analogie von Balg offnen / schliessen und Streicher-Ab / Aufstrich. Dies aber nur als Einstieg fur mich. Von dort aus verselbstandigt sich die Ensemble-Idee (bis hin zum solistischen Klarinetten-Duo): also nicht einfache Instrumentierung, sondern Um- und Neuformulierung, quasi Ruckgriff mit Blick nach vorn. Allen Stucken gemeinsam ist der Versuch, jeweils von einer quasi objektiven, also nicht von mir erfundenen, ja eigentlich nicht einmal individuell besonders ausformulierten Tonhohenvorordnung auszugehen. So ergibt sich das Tonhohenmaterial des ersten und vierten Stuckes durch mehrfache Spiegelung eines Allintervallakkords. Im zweiten und dritten Stuck werden diese Intervallqualitaten nach innen gekehrt und zum Cluster bzw. zu Skalenausschnitten eingeebnet. Diese Vorordnungen werden nun von der Musik auf immer andere Weise durchlaufen, abgetastet, ausgehorcht, wobei besonders die Instrumentalbehandlung versucht, die Aufmerksamkeit vom Tonhohensatz weg auf andere Wahrnehmungsbereiche zu lenken, d.h. ein eigenes Netz von Beziehungen, Klangabstufungs- und Umformungsprozessen zu entwickeln und dadurch die Objektivitat der Vorordnungen aufzubrechen. (z.B. bringen subjektive Lagen der Instrumente Korperlichkeit ins Spiel usw.) Es handelt sich also um den Versuch, innerhalb eines eng abgesteckten Rahmens eine moglichst grosse Skala von Ausdrucksebenen zu schaffen, vom atemlos drangenden ersten (vergl. Chopins Prelude op.28, 1) uber den fast erstarrten Zustand des zweiten, das halsbrecherische, dabei standig in sich selbst rotierende Umschiffen griff- und atemtechnischer Klippen im dritten bis hin zum leise singend beginnenden vierten Stuck. Neben diesem emotionalen Wahrnehmen bzw. in gegenseitiger Abhangigkeit ist aber immer auch ein reflektierendes Horen intendiert. In diesem Sinn beziehen sich die Stucke -besonders deutlich horbar im ersten- auch auf eine Technik Beethovens (Bagatelle op.119, VII): Ein Stuck ist zu Ende, wenn ein Gedankengang zu Ende gefuhrt ist. Im zweiten Stuck variieren die an der Klangoberflache eher starren Klavier-Melodien bei jeder Wiederholung geringfugig Anzahl und Reihenfolge ihrer Tone und die Dauern der Pausen und lenken so das Horen weg vom momentanen klanglichen Direkteindruck auf die entstehenden formalen Schwebungen. Die Stucke sind also auch innerhalb (scheinbar) vertrauten Klangmaterials immer horchend auf der Suche nach anderen, neuen Sensibilitaten. As we fine-tune these muscles, we gain tonal center and clarity, qualities that may elude us at the beginning of our practice. Under the Sun's Gaze as a title for a musical composition conjures up many possibilities. It is, in fact, an imagined line from an unwritten poem, invented with the idea of capturing something of the visual aura the sounds and energy of this work invoke in its composer' mind. An omnipotent presence in all of nature, a source of life yet also capable of its destruction, the sun affects the light and dark in our physical existence as it defines the daily and seasonal life. The music of this work, in three interlocking parts, takes turns being exuberant, caressing, scorching, receding, hazy, lazy, blazing, dissolving into darkness, blinding in its intensity. Subtitled Concerto da Camera III, this work is written for what has become known as the standard Pierrot instrumentation of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano plus percussion. The difference here is that the winds are doubled - the two flutists alternating with piccolo and alto flute and both clarinetists also doubling on bass clarinets. The ninth member of the ensemble, a soprano saxophone, appears well into the piece, its lyrical, plaintively expressive quality dominating the musical terrain for a while. While occasionally joining the others for some tutti outbursts, it maintains its position as something of a guest throughout. Of the various thematic ideas that populate this work, a six-note descending line played by the clarinet appearing right at the work's opening then arching back up reveals itself, as the music unfolds, to be the principal melodic building block of Under the Sun's Gaze. Its various transformations include the plaintive soprano saxophone melody appearing in the middle section. Just under 20 minutes in length, the work in its totality can be heard as being in a loose arch form, its ending receding into a distant darkening horizon which carries in it the seed of the new dawn that lies beyond. Gesualdo, Don Carlo, Furst von Venosa (1560-1613) gehort zu den eigenwilligsten italienischen Madrigal-Komponisten der Spatrenaissance. Seine ungewohnlich kuhne, selbst fur heutige Ohren modern klingende Harmonik, seine chromatischen Stimmfortschreitungen, seine ubersteigerte expressive Tonsprache regten mich schon vor Jahren zu einer grosseren Orgelkomposition an und inspirierten mich 1981 zu den >>Sinfonischen Metamorphosen<<. Dieses Werk ist eine vielgestaltige weitausgesponnene Fantasie. Sieben choralartige typische Klangbeispiele aus Gesualdos spaten funfstimmigen Madrigalen (4., 5. u. 6. Band) werden teils streng, teils frei zitiert und von Holz- oder Blechblasern intoniert. Diese Zitate gliedern, als formale und inhaltliche Schwer- und Ruhepunkte, den Verlauf des gesamten Werks. Jedes Zitat steht zu Beginn eines neuen Satzabschnitts; die darauffolgenden >>Metamorphosen<< entwickeln sich als rhapsodische kontrastreiche Charakterstucke. Im >>Preludio<< werden aus den vertonbaren Buchstaben vom Namen >>Gesualdo<< (G - E - Es - A - D) schwebende Klangflachen, rezitativische Gedanken und ein pragnantes rhythmisches Paukenthema gebildet. Diese ,,Grundelemente (Grundstrukturen) tauchen im Verlauf des Stucks immer wieder leitmotivisch auf. Im zweiten Abschnitt stehen sich lineare Streicher-Episoden und dichte Blaser-Klangballungen kontrastierend gegenuber. Der dritte Teil lauft als Passacaglia (Thema ist der Bass eines Gesualdo-Zitats) in mehreren Variationen ab. Im vierten Abschnitt dominiert lebhafte Streicherbewegung, kontrapunktiert von tiefen Blaser-Signalen. Der funfte Teil steigert sich- nach kantablem Beginn- zum ekstatischen Trauermarsch. Abschnitt sechs stellt sich als >>Rondello<< dar, mit um sich selbst kreisenden Klangfiguren (in verschiedenen Tongruppen (zwei, drei, funf). Im siebten und letzten Teil wird die verhalten-resignierende Stimmung des Anfangs beschworen, ehe eine knappe Stretta in den hymnischen Schluss mundet. In den Textender ausgewahlten Zitatstellen geht es meist um Todessehnsucht, Liebesqual und Verzweiflung. z. B. 1. und 2. Zitat: Moro lasso, al mio duolo (Ich sterbe, matt, an meiner Qual) (6. Buch) Dem Werk liegen zwar eine Reihe von dodekaphonischen Strukturen zugrunde (die teilweise von Gesualdos Klangzitaten abgeleitet wurden), doch sind die einzelnen Abschnitte auf,,tonale Pfeiler (G - E - A - D) gegrundet; das Stuck beginnt in G und endet aufD, ist also ubergeordnet tonal konzipiert, - der Versuch einer Synthese moderner Ausdrucksmittel von Vergangenheit und Gegenwart. Die >>Metamorphosen<< sind ein Stuck Bekenntnismusik - Bekenntnis zum Leben und Schaffen Gesualdos, eines Mannes, der vom Schicksal gezeichnet war, denn der Chronik Neapels bekannt war durch die Ermordung seiner ersten Frau und ihres Liebhabers. Dieser eminente Musiker war zugleich ein Mensch von ubertriebener Sensibilitat und wilder ekstatischer Heftigkeit: ,,Er wurde von einer Horde von Damonen heimgesucht, die ihm keine Ruhe gaben, heisst es in einem zeitgenossischen Bericht. Seine Kunst und sein Leben stand unter dem Gesetz der inneren Zerrissenheit, zwischen Auflehnung und Resignation (Verzweiflung und Hoffnung), zwischen Zartheit und Leidenschaft. Busoni tones down the colors of his orientalisms and totally eschews sentimental lyricism. His strengths lie especially in the scintillating, unfathomable characters and in a music that hovers in an ambivalent manner between brightness and darkness, sadness and humor, danger and harmlessness. This work of art makes its references clear: Gozzi's play about the murderous princess is peopled with familiar commedia dell'arte figures, and one is not quite sure whether this mixture of fun and danger gives a more relaxed feeling to the activity on the stage or whether it does not do precisely the opposite, adding the irreconcilable perspective of a gondola trip on the edge of a bottomless gulf. Busoni is more faithful to Gozzi than Puccini and thus to the gracious levity that hovers over the excesses of the action. Known professionally as Hauschka, composer Volker Bertelmann has catapulted himself into the top tier of instrumental composers. This is proven, not least, by the Oscar nomination which he received for his soundtrack to the2016 film Lion.

I have had the pleasure of getting to know Dennis over the past several years owing to our mutual affiliation at Montclair State University. We would meet unintentionally in the halls and begin conversations regarding all manners of topics: from the colorful history of the bass clarinet—and bass clarinetists—to the furious appetite of the New Jersey groundhog. Dennis inevitably finds the humor in things—he revels in discovering the comic story that can often be found, just underneath the topic. When Maestro Hostetter asked me to compose a new piece during his initial season with the Colonial Symphony, and mentioned the possibility of a work related to humor, I immediately thought of the Dennis. When I spoke with Maestro Hostetter the following day, I had already conceived of the title (very unusual for me—I’m much more a musical/visual thinker than a verbal one) as well as the overall musical narrative. Smiling Dennis is a concerto in one movement for one bass clarinetist and twenty string players. Somewhat unusually, each performer has a unique musical assignment—that is, the string players are not aligned into their typical alliances of first violins, second violins and so forth. This permits a more complex string texture, allowing each performer to assert his or her individuality. Indeed, the notion of individuality is essential to this concerto, as it often is in concerti. For example, Smiling Dennis begins with the bass clarinet not quite obeying the conventions of tuning to the orchestra. Rather than simply take the A offered by the Concertmaster, the soloist playfully performs a gently descending series of notes. Offered another A, the soloist repeats this gesture (though with a different descending series). This exchange occurs four times. In the final one, members of the string orchestra join the soloist in the first significant statement of one of the central melodies. The bass clarinet completes this introductory section alone, playing all the way down to a low A, a third below the lowest note in the celli. Following the introduction, Smiling Dennis consists of six sections, somewhat along the lines of a dance suite: an energetic Allegro, a lyric Arioso, a forward Piú mosso, a light-hearted and syncopated dance, a even more energetic passage for strings alone, and finally a modified return to the introduction. In the return, the string ensemble is no longer at all oppositional to the soloist. Rather, in response to the soloist’s gentle cajoling and supportive commentary, the strings accompany—with pleasure, you might say—the quiet, individual playfulness of the bass clarinet. The work ends with a return to the soloist’s substratum A, accompanied quietly by the strings.

Cesar Franck wrote his Symphony in D minor in 1887/88; in spite of the work's lukewarm reception at its world premiere on 17 February 1889, the work was published during his lifetime. It was not until a few years later that the established conductors dared perform this work more frequently . It marked the inevitable triumph of a work which had once caused such a furor and whose individuality of conception burst the framework of the genre (double tonality of D and F minor in the opening movement; the combination of Andante and Scherzo in the central one; the recapitulation of the main themes and motifs of the previous movements in the finale). The work was finally accepted into the concert repertoire for good around the turn of the century, not least through the good offices of influential critics and composers.Just as with the previously published Carnival of the Animals (PB/OB 5321) by Saint-Saens, Franck's work also raises many questions concerning its origin and history. Peter Jost based his work on the first edition (the autograph was destroyed in a fire in 1935) as well as on the piano reduction (four-handed) by the composer.A major work of the late-romantic repertoire, Cesar Franck's only symphony joins the ranks of Breitkopf & Hartel's new orchestral editions which follow the principles of Source Criticism for Practical Use.

Das Stuck stellt fur mich einen von verschiedenen Versuchen dar, aus einem streng punktuellen Musikdenken herauszufinden, mit dem ich mich seit meinem Studium bei Luigi Nono identifiziert hatte und dem ich auf meine eigene Weise treu zu bleiben entschlossen war, besonders in jener Zeit, als sich die sogenannte Avantgarde mehr und mehr auf surrealistische Kompromisse mit der burgerlichen Bequemlichkeit einzulassen schien. Die Besetzung - Klarinette, Bratsche und Schlagzeug (Marimbaphon mit Almglocken, Becken, Pauke und Bongos) - gewahrleistete eine homogene Ausgangsbasis der instrumentalen Mittel, von wo aus einerseits eine Art Klang-Gestik - das heisst enger oder weiter verzweigte Tonfigurationen - sich entwickeln liess, wahrend andererseits die Klangdifferenzierung nach innen weiter getrieben werden konnte bis hinein in die bewusstgemachte Anatomie des entstehenden (geblasenen, geschlagenen, geriebenen, gestrichenen, gezupften, getupften usw.) Tones. Zwischen diesen beiden Gegensatzen - Verflussigung des punktuell Gedachten hier und seiner Versteinerung beziehungsweise inneren Aufbrechung, Offnung dort - bewegt sich diese Musik: Gegensatze, die ich in spateren Werken bis in radikale Extreme weitergetrieben habe, wahrend hier das Ganze noch einem eher abstrakt-spielerischen Gesamtcharakter verpflichtet bleibt. (Helmut Lachenmann, 1989) Trio fluido , noch vor dem Schlagzeugsolostuck Interieur I, meinem Opus 1, entstanden, gehort einer Schaffensphase an, die noch streng strukturalistisch gepragt war, in der also ausschliesslich am akustischen Material orientierte Beziehungen und Entwicklungen kompositorisch gesteuert wurden. Was immer in diesem Stuck an Spielerischem einerseits, an Verfremdung und Klangzersetzung andererseits zu finden ist, ergab sich aus der Anwendung von solchen immanent orientierten Gesetzmassigkeiten, war also nirgends Gegenstand von expressiver Spekulation. Formal hat man es mit einer vielfach gebrochenen, aber insgesamt zugleich steigenden und fallenden Kurve zu tun: Auf dem Hintergrund scheinbar lose aufgereihter Abschnitte kehren sich mehr und mehr extreme Materialeigenschaften hervor, schliessen sich zusammen, bewirken insgesamt eine Zuspitzung, die umschlagt in den Kontrast eines statischen, durch innere Fluktuationen belebten Feldes. Dieses zerfasert sich seinerseits bis zum Schluss, wobei hinter den Tonfiguren die Gerauschkomponenten, hinter diesen die Erfahrung von der korperlichen Beschaffenheit des klingenden Stoffes und dahinter die auf solche Weise entleerte Zeit freigelegt, bewusstgemacht und in den musikalischen Zusammenhang eingegliedert wird. Strukturelles Musizieren: Das ist eine paradoxe Vorstellung. In Trio fluido entdeckt und nutzt die Musik selbst diesen Widerspruch. Mit der zunehmenden Auflosung (und zugleich der instrumentaltechnischen Ausuferung im Schlagzeug) schalen sich jene andere Materialwahrnehmung und daran gebundene Expressivitat heraus, die in meinen spateren Werken, zuerst in temA, Air und Klangschatten Ausgangshaltung bedeuteten, um die Reflexion der Bedingungen des Horens und Musizierens ins Horen selbst mit einzubeziehen.
