Beethoven did not work continuously on this symphony and interrupted his work a couple of times. As the sketches show, he presumably wrote down first ideas in the autumn of 1800.No other autograph material has survived. As Ferdinand Ries, a pupil of Beethoven, bitterly reports, Beethoven gave him the autograph, but it was unfortunately stolen by a friend, out of pure friendship. In April 1803, the composition was premiered publicly, together with the first symphony and the third piano concerto with Beethoven himself as soloist. Although Beethoven's first two symphonies are still influenced by Haydn and Mozart, novelties can already be discovered. The second symphony starts breaking away from traditional forms and lets us surmise the monumentality of Beethoven's innovation. The editor, Armin Raab, critically illuminates the transmission of the work and its sources. He also clears up a wide spread belief in older literature, that this cheerful work might have been composed parallel to the Heiligenstadter Testament. The practical performance material by Breitkopf & Hartel is based on the music text of the New Beethoven Complete Edition and constitutes the authoritative reading of Beethoven research.

Beethoven's Meeres Stille und Gluckliche Fahrt (Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage) op. 112 for four-part mixed chorus and symphony orchestra - his setting of a pair of poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - defies straightforward categorization, but can best be described as a choral ode. Beethoven in fact never voyaged by sea, but his composition, premiered in 1815, continues to surprise even today. He depicted in music the smooth surface of the motionless water and the oppressive calm, which meant nothing other than being becalmed, a delayed voyage, and short rations in the era of sailing, with the same intensity as a freshening increasing wind, with which Aeolus, the God of the winds, ultimately enabled the longed-for prosperous voyage to take place. The composed calmness of the motionless sea is conveyed in the low register used throughout, in which the chorus sings the first poem accompanied by washes of pianissimo sounds on the strings. There is a surprising moment with the musical portrayal of the ungeheuere Weite (immense breadth), at which the vocal-instrumental writing suddenly crescendos to forte and unfolds into a texture of over five octaves. By contrast Gluckliche Fahrt is written in restlessly-compiled meters, whose musical setting in flowing movement with diatonic scale passages evokes happy excitement and confidence. The work was dedicated to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whom Beethoven greatly admired throughout his life. The work has now been published in a new critical edition based on the first printed edition and the performance score which Beethoven himself checked and corrected. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1039500.

Whether for first editions or not the primary sources of Beethoven's works always have to be interpreted with great expertise. The editor's knowledgeability is the decisive point when it comes to the level of quality of a new edition. And both Clive Brown and Peter Hauschild are setting standards. On the whole, it was a good idea for Breitkopf to give itself time with these editions. The difficult feat of doing justice to the needs of performers and to philological scholarship has been carried off at a level that raises the standards to an almost frighteningly high level. (Peter Gulke) In the case of the First Symphony, Clive Brown reaches an optimal balance between source criticism and performance-practical requirements. Interpreters and scholars appreciate the source criticism for performance practice that Breitkopf cultivates not only in its Beethoven editions. In the case of the First Symphony, Clive Brown again reaches an optimal balance between source criticism and performance-practical requirements.
