Chen Yi’s original A Set of Chinese Folk Songs included ten songs, first arranged for the vocal ensemble Chanticleer to perform with students in the “Singing-in-the-Schools†programs in the 1990's. Taken from a wide range of geographic regions in China, with rich characteristics and expressive contrast, the set has been sung by many choirs around the world in the past thirty years. Three songs from that collection have been thoughtfully arranged into a three-movement suite for intermediate string orchestras, bringing this beautiful Chinese folk music to even more young musicians. The celebratory Fengyang Song is from Anhui province which is popular in the whole country. The lyrical love song Flowing Stream is from Yunnan province in the southwest, and the passionate and vivid Mayila is from the ethnic group known as Kazakhs in the northwest.

In a city there lives a man whose head is full of melodies. As it gets louder and louder around him, he can no longer hear his music. So he decides to buy a quiet house in the country. Shortly afterwards, many tenants move into his house: a father, a mother and two daughters - the string family: violin, viola, cello, double bass. This is followed by the woodwind family and a fat lady with her three brisk sons: the brass, etc. All of them only talk musically with each other and so it soon booms, echoes and rattles from all rooms. How the man succeeds in getting everyone in the house to listen to each other and play together - this is what this book tells about. The composer Michael Ruggeberg has enriched this wonderful story with music that accompanies and continues the story in a very unique way. A house full of music is also suitable for a children's concert with a narrator and orchestra. (Score = 49033128 / set of parts = 49033129). For children from 6 years.

A moving tribute by Susan Day to the people we admire---whether it be family members, role models, or those serving our country---this piece in E minor uses easy rhythms, pizzicato, some divisi in the cello part, and a few low 2nd fingers in the violin 1 part. All players get melody lines, and the violin 2 part doubles the viola. Sounds harder than it is! (2:30).

Two of the most popular of Chanukah tunes are arranged by master string pedagogue Doris Gazda for the youngest of students. Though simple, it give the very young player the chance to sound wonderful at the very first holiday concert.More than 2000 years ago Israel, the land of the Jewish people, was ruled byGreeks and Syrians. A small group of Jewish people fought to free their country and defeated the big armies of their rulers. The Jews reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and rededicated it to God. To celebrate, they wanted to light the menorah, a candelabrum with a place for nine candles. Each evening they would light the menorah: a single candle the first night, two on the second night and so on until all eight candles were lit. The ninth candle of the menorah was used to light the other candles. However, they found that they had only enough oil to burn the candle for one day. Yet miraculously, the one-day supply burned for eight days. So to celebrate the miracle of the oil lasting for eight days, they commemorated the event with the festival of Chanukah.Children celebrate Chanukah with singing the Chanukah song and with gifts of toys such as dreydls. A dreydl is a little top that is spun by dragging the thumb and one finger across a little spindle.

Angel of Dreamers is a song cycle for bass-baritone (or mezzo-soprano) singer, trombone, and either string orchestra, string quintet, or piano. It is based on the extraordinary poetry of the Jamaican-American poet, Lorna Goodison, whom I have had the great pleasure of getting to know in the course of writing this piece. The work was commissioned by a friend from my undergraduate college years at The Eastman School of Music, Maury Okun, trombonist and director of the Detroit Chamber Winds And Strings. The work was premiered in 2011 by bass-baritone Daniel Washington, trombonist and U. of Michigan faculty member David Jackson, and the string section of the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings. Daniel and David gave the second performance of the work with Lorna Goodison and Maury Okun in attendance at The Juilliard School the following year. I was approached by Maury Okun and David Jackson to write this piece as a tribute to Maury's father who had recently passed away. They also introduced me to their colleague and friend Lorna Goodison, suggesting her poetry. Reading several volumes of her work, I was absolutely captivated by the vivid imagery and beautiful messages of her words. I chose five of the poems, forming a cycle about life and death and home and parents. Lorna is originally from Jamaica, and the rich, vivid imagery, language and story lines of her poems beautifully reflect her roots. The work, in the tradition of Brahms' songs for voice, viola, and piano, features a singer with an obligato lyric instrumental line, which, in my piece, is the trombone, an instrument that blends so beautifully with the sound of a bass singer. The first song, O Love You So Fear the Dark is hopeful and uplifting, describing enduring love throughout the twists and turns of our lives. The music is strong and declamatory, but also tender. The second song, God A Me actually portrays a fish in Jamaica which is almost amphibious, flying up out of the water onto the land, and somehow, magically, returning to the water! For me this poem depicts the enjoyment of seeing parts of life that are fun and enjoyable and almost magical! The third song, All Souls Day depicts a holiday, somewhat magical, but also full of life and energy. The final two songs are a tribute to our parents -- My Mother's Sea Chanty, recalling a dream of seeing one's mother, with lyrics of tender love and remembrance, and finally, This is my Father's Country which is a tribute to the life of a loving father, recalling his spirit, his love of the music Harry Belafonte, and his enduring spirit. Angel of Dreamers was a special piece for me to write: for and with friends, old and new, collaborating with a poet whose beautiful, meaningful, and touching words were so inspiring, performed by fantastic musicians who poured themselves into the music, and commissioned by a dear friend from years gone by. THIS is why we write and perform music!.

Composer Bud Woodruff continues to present compositions that students will love to perform and will learn from playing. The title, Dorian's Barn has a unique double meaning in that it is dedicated to a man named Dorian and it is in the Dorian mode. The addition of the word 'barn' in the title also adds to the music a fun country backwoods aesthetic.
I had promised a piece for my valued friend, Dorian Barnes, in exchange for some repair work he performed on my violin at an inconvenient time for him. He is a very gifted luthier, which is a very ancient craft, and in addition to carving modern instruments, he has also carved more archaic stringed instrument. So I wanted to write a piece that captured the gist of what those original instruments might have performed.
The title Dorian's Barn is a twist on his name (Dorian Barnes), but also gave a good bit of inspiration to the piece, too. There are many ancient, deserted, old barns where I live, and they are all wonderfully made, but there is no telling what one might find inside of one of them. There is a real sense of mystery one feels when approaching one for the first time, and I wanted to capture that feeling in the music, too. It turns out that there was an old barn on the land where Dorian grew up, and that image has really stuck in his mind, too.
As a further twist on Dorian's name, the piece is primarily in the E-Dorian mode.

“English Horn (or flute or clarinet or alto), Violin & Cello Rarely has a musical work been better characterized by its subtitle than Nicolas Bacri's Lyric Interlude: 'A Study in Pastoral Style'. When, in 2008, the composer received the commission for a piece with English horn from Cecilia Benner, patron of the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, he immediately thought of the duo between this instrument and the oboe that Berlioz, in the Symphonie fantastique, placed at the beginning of the 'Scène aux champs', making suddenly appear a nocturnal country landscape where two shepherds carry on a dialogue on their pipes. First performed in March 2009 at one of the Scarab Club Concerts in Detroit, the Lyric Interlude for English horn, violin and cello (Op.110a) nonetheless proclaims another tradition: that of British pastoralism, illustrated by the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), the 50th anniversary of his death having just been celebrated. This score pays him homage of rare sensitivity: set off by refined counterpoint, the undulating lament of the beginning, rhythmically supple, evokes the waving wheat, as does Vaughan Williams in the opening undulation of his Symphony No.3. The lyrical effusion, briefly interrupted by a scherzo in 6/8, again pours out, making the work evolve towards a slow, ecstatic atmosphere, close to the last of the English composer's Three Preludes on Welsh Hymn Tunes. Far from bucolic, postcard clichés and servile imitation, this Lyric Interlude opens the doors to a realm where pure beauty reigns. The composer also wrote another version of this work for English horn (or flute, clarinet, or viola) and piano, Op.110b (AL 30 750)&rdquo.

DRIVING MUSIC was commissioned by the New York Classical Players for their inaugural concert. Thework took inspiration from Needham’s seemingly-constant travel schedule in the spring and summer of2010. The work was written, in part, in various cities across the country, on a number of planes, and innumerous car rides (as a passenger, of course). To highlight the composer’s travels, the work is cast ina series of contrasting musical vignettes, with each section representing a place Needham was in whilesketching the work.

Today, it is hard to believe that Bedrich Smetana kept receiving rejections when he tried to get his enormously popular Moldau printed.

What is also amazing is that the first text-critical edition prepared by the Czech Smetana expert Milan Pospisil in 1999, which had entailed an exhaustive evaluation of the sources and been given a full text-critical editorial treatment as a Eulenburg study score, had no resonance of any kind among performers since no performance material had been published. After 15 years, Pospisils edition is finally being completed in a manner suitable for practice: with a conducting score and orchestral parts which will ensure that all future performances are based on a musical text that is as reliable as can be.
The work depicts the course of the river Vltava, beginning with its first two sources, the cold and warm Vltava, and the confluence of the two streams that join to form a single river; then the course of the Vltava through forests and meadows, and through open countryside where a peasant wedding is being celebrated; water-sprites dance by the light of the moon; on the nearby cliffs castles, mansions and ruins rise proudly into the air; the Vltava eddies in the St John's Rapids, then flows in a broad stream as it continues its course towards Prague, where the Vysehrad appears, before the river finally disappears into the distance as it flows majestically into the Elbe.Vltava (The Moldau), Smetana's best-known and most frequently performed orchestral work, was written between 19 November and 8 December 1874, at a time when Smetana was already completely deaf. The world premiere took place in Prague on 4 April 1875, but the score was not published until 1880.

There once lived a man whose head was filled with music - but the city was so noisy that he could barely hear the beautiful melodies. So he bought a house in the quiet countryside and invited other musicians to move in: the String family with the violin, viola, violoncello and double-bass, the Brass family, a gentleman with his piano, a lady with her harp, and the two sturdy guys with drum and timpani. Soon sounds droned and groaned, thundered and rumbled throughout the house. - The man was getting desperate. This was not what he had imagined. Find out if the musicians can resolve their conflict and become a real orchestra and if the man will eventually be able to hear his melodies again. 'Ein Haus voll Musik' is also suited for performances as part of a children's concert with narrator and orchestra. This ode to the Wild West begins with a mysterious introduction using the folk song All the Pretty Little Horses in an eerie setting that will send shivers up the spines of performers and audience members alike. Brief solos for violin, viola, and cello are heard. The pace then picks up as we hear the driving and energetic theme of the Ghost Stallion riding through the moonlit countryside. The repeated galloping rhythm (eighth/two sixteenths) appears in stretches and is designed to improve your students' abilities to perform this all-important bowing pattern. This picturesque and educationally sound selection by Richard Meyer is sure to capture the imagination and improve the technique of everyone in both intermediate and more advanced orchestras.
