This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesser-known compositions by important masters. The volumes are deliberately kept small in extent, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. There are four existing harpsichord books with a total of 226 compositions by Francois Couperin le Grand (1668 -1733). His works are as unknown to pianists as they are famous among harpsichord players. The grace and imaginativeness of his works lend themselves especially well to the sound of the harpsichord, which is why the piano interpretation of works by Couperin, Rameau, Scarlatti and other composers of that time has been categorically rejected. But, after all, the works of Bach and Handel were written for the haipsichord and clavichord, and no one would dare question their intetpretation on the pianoforte. In order to introduce these lmpressionists of the Baroque Era to piano instruction, the editor has added to this series a folio of both Couperin's and Rameau's (EB 8033) music. The selection of the pieces is based on two criteria: 1. relatively modest demands made on technique, 2. various musical forms of expression. The Butterflies and the Windmills are both especially typical of masterful character pieces. The demands made on technique certainly correspond to a level of moderate difficulty. The simplifications made are restricted to the artistically realized twopart accompaniment (eg. p. 4 f. and p. 8 f.) with regard to finger stretch and to the profuse ornamentation of the original. The indications for phrasing and articulation are those of the editor. The first two pieces have been precisely elaborated on in this respect to serve as a model, whereas the remaining pieces contain only suggestions. As in other folios of this series; what is here to be stressed, is the importance of working out independently the phrasing and the dynamics. Directions for this are given by the respective footnotes; these directions, however, are not obligatory. lndications pertaining to dynamics and tempo have been omitted completely; the clearly recognizable character of the individual pieces should be direction enough. The tonal possibilities of the piano should in any case be used subtly. The very precise fingerings have been adapted to the suggested phrasings and to the corresponding realization of trills (according to the table). Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Spring 1980.

A beloved star in the international jazz world, AliRyerson has developed a large and enthusiastic following, particularly among alto and bass flutists in the traditionally classicalflute community. FOLKTALE is an original workequally inspired by both worlds. Along with all the elegantcounterpoint of baroque flute duets, FOLKTALE’slanguage is grounded in jazz harmony and rhythm, fullynotated for the classically-trained performer. Performancesuggestions are provided with hints on style and phrasing. When no bass flute is available, FOLKTALE may beplayed on C Flute and Alto.FOLKTALE was inspired by a tune I wrote some years ago for my dear friend, Dr. Vivien Bonazzi. A dedicated jazzlover who hails from Canberra, Australia, Vivien is an accomplished flutist and guitarist. (Her day job is at the NationalInstitute of Health in Maryland, as Program Director in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at the NationalHuman Genome Research Institute). Vivien commissioned me to write her a flute piece, something with a jazz feel anda written-out flute solo that would sound as if she were improvising. I enthusiastically agreed and wrote a tune titledAll Things Being Equal (a wink and a nod to the mathematical side of her personality!). I performed it only once, witha rhythm section, just before handing Vivien the sheet music. I never gave it a second thought until a couple of yearslater, when I found myself on a recording date with bass flutist extraordinaire, Wendy Stern. We so enjoyed working (andplaying!) together that day, that we vowed to join forces again as soon as possible. To speed up the process, I decided towrite us a duet. When I sat down to start composing, the melody I had previously written for Vivien kept popping intomy head. It finally occurred to me that it would make the perfect duet. So, after some major reworking of the score,FOLKTALE emerged, and I now have two very good friends to thank for its inspiration!

This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesser-known compositions by important masters. The volumes are deliberately kept small in extant, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) is the second great keyboard master of the Baroque Age next to Couperin. His works are as unknown to pianists, with few exceptions, as they are famous among harpsichord players. The virtuosity and imaginativeness of his works lend themselves especially well to the sound of harpsichord, which is why the piano interpretation of works by Couperin, Rameau, Scarlatti and other composers of that time has been categorically rejected. The selection of the pieces is based on two criteria: 1. relatively modest demands made on technique, 2. various musical forms of expression. Baroque dance forms and graceful character pieces (LaJoyeuse, L'Indifferente) are typical ofRameau's work. Simplifications to a small extent of the harpsichord setting and also of the omamentation in the original version were required, based on the teaching experience of the editor. The indications for phrasing and articulation are those of the editor. From Judas Maccabeus comes a sacred reworking of one of Handel's most beloved melodic creations. Adapted for use at Christmas, the score overflows with a Baroque elegance, ideal for a holiday concert or worship service. Its brief performance time (under two minutes) makes it a wonderful call to worship. The accompanying chamber orchestration keeps in the style and delivers a sparkling option for churches with string resources. Bravo! From Book I of Bach's The Well-Tempered Klavier, this lively reworking of the Prelude and Fugue in B-flat minor, No. 22 provides students the wonderful experience of playing Baroque counterpoint in a minor key. Though rhythms are not complex, counting skills will be honed. The piece remains mainly in first position, yet also includes melodic augmented seconds. In the five-part fugue, the double basses have their own independent line, so let them shine.

“Italian composer, Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) is well-known for his Keyboard compositions. His 555 Keyboard Sonatas remain ever popular to this day, and it is for this reason that this second volume is indispensable to performers of the genre. Originally composed for the Harpsichord, Organ or early Pianoforte, the Sonatas display the riveting use of discords and unconventional modulations to remote keys. It is also thought that much of Scarlatti's Keyboard music contains influences of Iberian music, considering that he spent much of his working life in the service of the Spanish and Portuguese royal families. The second volume, comprising Sonatas 53-103, includes the popular and recognised Sonatas in F minor (K. 69) and B minor (K. 87). Bearing in mind that Domenico Scarlatti was a highly competent and popular Keyboard player in his day, so much so that he was employed in the service of two royal families, his Sonatas are composed with much experience, understanding and expertise, creating an essential addition to the repertoire of all Keyboard players of the Baroque genre. â€.

J. S. Bach (1685-1750) was a German Baroque composer who is revered for the originality and skill of his contrapuntal and harmonic techniques. He spent most of his life working as an organist and choirmaster, but was also employed as a composer a many different Royal Courts. However, his skill as an organist and composer for Organ is what gained him the reputation he enjoyed during his lifetime.
This is perhaps epitomised by his Fantasia and Fugue in G Minor (BWV 542), often referred to as the Great Fantasia and Fugue. It has been edited by Sir Frederick Bridge and James Higgs.

Gone are the winds---Bach's great music remains. But, it is not merely giving the horn parts to the violas. This is a reworking that maintains the integrity of the music adapted for new instrumentation. Scored with four violin parts and two viola parts, this piece can be performed effectively using single or multiple players on each part. The antiphonal writing highlights the contrapuntal genius of this masterpiece. Perfect for festival, to feature students, or as an opener or closer! This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

The title of the piece refers to Lethe, one of the rivers of Hades, known from Greek mythology. The meaning of the world is 'oblivion'; the dead souls were drinking from it in order to forget about their earthly life, whose memories might have poisoned their eternal life. According to tradition, river Lethe also the symbol of time as a dynamically moving, flowing, changing entity. Mate Bella's composition follows this ancent symbolic structure, the flow of this mythical river and its waves in the acoustic space created by the music. The composer prescribes an unusual arrangement of the string orchestra, reminiscent of the polychoral technique of composition of the early Baroque, with larger and smaller groups of performers. To the right and left of the podium sit string quintets (two violins, a viola, a cello and a double bass), while the center is held by a larger string ensemble (eight violins, two violas and two cellos). The musical materials for the quintets are somewhat solistic, but the parts diverge and reunite repeatedly, while becoming shorter or eventually fading out into oblivion. The workings of these resemble the waves of a river, followed by ever smaller ripples and whirls of the surface. The piece was commissioned by the Musica Viva concert series of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. (Janos Malina).
