rw? 2 by Mark Andre is a contemporary work for Vocal and Instrumental Ensemble which is part of a four-part cycle. The word rw? (pronounced rúach) comes from Aramaic and covers a whole field of words: wind, breath, soul, spirit. In the Bible it stands for 'Holy Spirit'. In his cycle, the French composer and sound researcher Mark Andre makes this 'holy' breath concretely and existentially tangible. rw? 2 was commissioned by Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart and was first performed on 12 June 2020 in Stuttgart by Gaechinger Cantorey. The complete cycle was first performed on 15 May 2022 at the KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen, Hannover by more than 200 singers and Ensemble Modern, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher.

Playing an instrument well and playing an instrument well in the context of an ensemble are different. In this practical guidebook, authors Robin Fountain and Thomas E. Verrier empower musicians to get the most out of their ensemble experience, exploring six concepts developed over years observing and interviewing musicians from one of the world’s finest ensembles: The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Unify through sight as well as sound. Don’t always follow conductors, but always pay attention to them. Be together rather than “right.†Don’t be too literal. Know your role. To sound in tune, play “out of tune together.†Using easy-to-understand tools—proven to work in any type of conducted ensemble and by musicians at any level—Fountain and Verrier turn the traditional top-down ensemble training paradigm on its head. They show how ensemble musicians, even when performing in large conducted groups, become most successful when entrusted to unify elements of the music through direct communication and collaboration with one another. As musicians shoulder this responsibility, they create a cohesive musical product that the conductor can respond to and influence. The result is more engaged, effective, and satisfying music making for everyone. Robin Fountain is Professor of Conducting at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. Thomas E. Verrier is Senior Band Conductor and Director of Wind Ensembles at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music.

Ye Olde English Hunt comes to life through this colorful and humorous musical portrait. The opening pastoral scene is augmented with bird whistles, duck calls, and whatever wildlife your percussion section can conjure up. A series of trumpet calls, followed by a chorus of A Hunting We Will Go leads us into the frenzy of the hunt, complete with barking dogs and the galloping of horse hooves. Great fun for the band and especially your audience, this is a lighter, tongue in cheek selection for all.

Chopin's waltzes were – contrary to, say, those by Schubert – no longer conceived for dancing or for the ballroom. These pieces assumed the form and function of idealized concert waltzes, which Chopin enjoyed performing in the elegant and exclusive art-loving salons of Paris. A particularly eloquent example is the “Grande Valse brillante†op. 18 which, with its multiplicity of charming melodic ideas and moods – now gently rocking, now overwhelming, now again triumphantly jubilant – became one of Chopin's most popular waltzes. The medium level of difficulty allows even less proficient pianists to become familiar with the “brilliant†side of Chopin through this waltz.

For flute (piccolo), clarinet (B flat/C), glass harmonica, xylophone, piano I, piano II, violin I, violin II, viola, violoncello, double bass Written in March 1886 as a humorous occasional work for the traditional carnival concert organized by his cellist friend Charles-Joseph Lebouc, the Carnival of the Animals was so successful that Saint-Saëns banned performances and publication soon afterwards. He was worried that this “grand zoological fantasy†– consisting of 14 short individual pieces for eleven instruments – might overshadow his serious works. Yet only five months after the composer's death, it appeared in print after all, beginning its worldwide victory march – in its original setting as well as in numerous arrangements. Thus, the Carnival did in fact arguably become the most popular work by this French composer and, owing to its musical originality, it is also a favourite in music lessons or for school orchestra performances. With this combination of a study edition and an edition in parts (for which additional parts for larger numbers of strings may be ordered), G. Henle Publishers now presents the perfect resource for such occasions.
