With this arrangement it is possible to present the work in a performance space of limited size. Haydn's original orchestration is filled with vivid tone painting and this reduced version represents Haydn's score using accurate colors for the obligato melodies and appropriate instrumental voices for the colla parte passages. It follows the format and content of the critical edition by Carus (ed. W. Gersthofer) and may be used together with the other materials from Carus 51.990 (choral and vocal scores, string parts). Modern performances of Creation use sometimes 50-60 players. It is hoped that the present reduction will make this beautiful work available to smaller groups, smaller performance venues, and groups with smaller budgets. Score available separately - see item CA.5199000.

A talented and complex figure with a character of rare depth and irreproachable morals, Fermo Bellini lived a life rich in experiences in the most disparate cultural fields, building his period in music between 1839 and 1850. A pupil of the distinguished violinist and conductor Gaetano Zocca in Ferrara, he specialized on the trombone, perhaps encouraged by his teacher, who had invented a new form of bow for this instrument. His son relates his success in the various theatres where he performed and in Milan, where he was held in esteem both as a composer and a theorist, transcribing opera scores particularly for wind instruments according to the fashion of the day. He was musically productive from 1833, the date of the printing of his first work continuing til the middle of the century when his passion for literature and social comment took on greater significance. Treatises, duets, trios, quartets and divertimenti demonstrate his considerable mastery and knowledge of wind instruments. such that it made him the leading exponent of the Milanese scene: works which were published by the major publishers of Milan such as Francesco Lucca and the Ricordi family confirm the reputation and success that Bellini achieved there.

Gianni Schicchi is a one-act comic opera by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924). The final and most popular opera in a trio known as Il trittico (The Triptych), each one dealing with the concealment of a death, the work premiered at the Metropolitan Opera on December 14, 1918. It tells the story of four family members anxiously discussing the contents of their very recently deceased family member, Buoso Donati, only to discover to their horror that he had left everything to a monastery. Gianni Schicchi, not related to the family, arrives and concocts a scheme to have a new will written as nobody but the family knows Buoso is dead. But when the notary arrives Schicchi, pretending to be a Buoso on the mend, dictates that his house, mule, and mills should be left to Gianni Schicchi, which allows him to offer marriage between his daughter Lauretta and Donati family member Rinuccio. Lauretta's soprano aria, O mio babbino caro (Oh, my dear papa), is among the most well known in opera and is frequently sung as an encore in recitals or concerts. Franz Schubert's Mass in A-flat major: A work that time and again occupied the composer anew, with which he, in his words, strived towards the highest in art - and perhaps only wished to receive a court appointment in Vienna. His efforts to present a new, individual mass led, at any rate, to unconventional solutions (and an unusual key), a renunciation of plain acclamation, a reduction of pathos in favor of an exceptionally elaborate composition, particularly the first part - a brilliant missa solemnis for the ceremonious organization of the court church service and, at the same time, the public presentation of an ambitious composer's artistic competence. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4065900.

This critical edition sheds light on the special qualities linking RV 198 (here published for the first time) to the musicians of the Saxon court, and offers the first detailed comparison between two versions of the concerto. Passages of brilliant figuration and finely spun diminutions characterize the solo episodes in the fast movements. An alternative Adagio is included in each of the various formats (scores, keyboard reduction and parts).

From the composer: After many years writing cadenzas, transcriptions and reductions of orchestral works, I decided to take the plunge and try my hand at writing a piece of my own. It is my privilege to dedicate this first effort to Viviane Spanoghe, my musical partner, muse, and benevolent critic for the past 40 years. Another considerable debt is to the composer Peter Swinnen, whose formidable erudition and expertise helped transform an idea into a musical word. Lastly, I discovered Hildegard von Bingen, whose genius struck me so forcefully through the ages; she gave me the material prima and the will to complete this essay..
