In contrast to his other large-scale choral works however Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather for every performance he made numerous changes. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources. The wish often expressed by conductors to perform an authentic version is made possible for the first time with the present edition in this fourth and final version which was performed under Bach?s direction in 1749. At the same time with the aid of the appendix it is possibleto perform the work in the traditional ?mixed version.?

The genesis of Chopin's Polonaise Brillante Op. 22 leads back to his youth in Warsaw and the years of his first trips as a virtuoso. Designed as a concert piece with Orchestra it takes up a special position among the polonaise compositions of Chopin. However by tradition the work has always been performed as an extremely effective solo piece. Since no autograph has survived the various first prints are used as sources. Comparisons show that the English first edition must have been based on the autograph manuscript of Chopin. The present new edition therefore rates this English edition more highly than usual.Thus numerous discrepancies and omissions in the French definitive edition which generally is regarded as the most important source can be clarified and complemented. The notes on interpretation not only explain the relatively rare term 'spianato' but also provide information on Chopin's way of playing trills and appoggiaturas as well as on Chopin's tempo rubato. For that sources from the vicinity of the composer such as messages from his pupil Karol Mikuli are evaluated.

This has resulted in a number of original arrangements for four- to eight-part mixed choir a cappella, shedding new light on well-known classics such as O du fröhliche [O, you joyful], Stille Nacht [Silent Night] and Lasst uns froh und munter sein [Let us be happy and cheerful]. The first volume includes five Christmas carols from the German-speaking regions. They range from simple but harmonically intriguing settings such as Lieb Nachtigall, wach auf [Dear nightingale, wake up] to eight-part sound paintings with bell-like chimes as in O du fröhliche and classical double choir settings such as Resonet in laudibus . The second volume includes five Christmas spirituals with English texts, forming a contrast to the solemn and festive character of the first. The choir can prove its swing and jazz qualities here; the stirring arrangements are a gain for classical Christmas concerts, too.
