Charles Gounod composed this Requiem under the impact of the death of his four-year-old grandson, Maurice. According to information handed down, while finishing the details of this work he was overtaken by death. It was published posthumously in various constellations by his pupil, Henri Busser, but the only complete version from the pen of Gounod is the version for large orchestra, which is published here for the first time in a critical edition. Gounod's Requiem, unlike many contemporary settings of the Mass of the Dead, is not characterized by darkness and terror. Rather, with all of its trepidation - expressed through a marked chromaticism - an atmosphere of hopeful expectation, of trust in the grace and equity of the divine judge predominates. This confidence finds its expression in the choice of the fundamental key of C major, which is rather unusual for a requiem. The work was given an impressive performance on the occasion of the first anniversary of Gounod's death in the Parisian church of Sainte-Madeleine under the direction of Gabriel Fauré and it was highly acclaimed by the contemporary press. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2731500.

Anton Bruckner composed his first mass, the Mass in D minor, in 1864 in just four months. It was not ready in time for the Kaiser Franz Joseph I's birthday, as planned, but was first performed on 20 November at the Feast of St Cecilia in Linz Cathedral - with great success. The mass is one of the first works by Bruckner to be written in his characteristic symphonic style. It was revised several times and first published in 1892. This edition is based on a critical evaluation of all the relevant sources, and offers an improved musical text. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2709200.

A good six years following its first performance in Milan (1773) a second version of Exsultate, jubilate was completed for a performance on Trinity Sunday in 1779. It has survived in a manuscript from Salzburg. This Salzburg version, which was discovered in 1978, differs from the Milan version primarily through the use of flutes instead of oboes and also through the use of two different texts for the first aria. In the first version the text refers to Christmas, whereas in the second version it refers to the festival of Trinity. Mozart's autograph of the Milan version had been thought to be missing since the second world war and it has only been accessible in the Biblioteka Jagiellonska in Krakow for a little over a decade. The present new critical edition by Wolfgang Hochstein is the first which could be based on both versions. Score available separately - see item CA.4076700.

The Prélude proceeds by juxtaposition of 7 harmonic variations alternating the cantus of C H A R B E L (consisting of the French correspondence between letters and notes), between left hand and right hand, with gradation of nuances from pianissimo to fortissimo. The subject of the Fugue derives from an ornamentation of the cantus of the Prélude and gives rise to a contrapuntal andtonal development modulating throughout the cycle of fifths.

Tanets is inspired by the rhythm of the Basque fandango, with abundant hemiolas alternating 2 and 3 in the accompaniment. The piece, in ternary form, develops a joyful diatonic theme in a very modulating tonal game.

Grief, Solace, and Trust The 10-lieder cycle, Biblical Songs op. 99, was composed in the spring of 1894 in New York City, where Antonin Dvorak lived for nearly two years. Homesickness and sad news of the death of composer friends, together with his own father's poor state of health, may have prompted Dvorak to choose the intimate form and religious subject. All of the cycle's texts derive from the Book of Psalms in the Old Testament. Klaus Uwe Ludwig's moving organ arrangement, close to the original, is based on the Dvorak Complete Edition. In translating the text from Czech to German, Ludwig respected to the utmost the content and speech rhythms paramount in the original.
