Composed by Armando Ghidoni , Jazzy Flute Challenge is a piece for Flute and Piano accompaniment. Lasting approximately ten minutes, it is dedicated to Maxence Larrieu and was commissioned for the International Flute Contest. Quite technical, this piece requires some upper intermediate/advanced skills and a good knowledge of the instrument. It is a long, involved movement lasting approximately 8 minutes: with contrasting major and minor sections, multiple rhythmical, rhetoric and emotional changes. The piece shows influences of flamboyant artistry seen in Italian baroque pieces, but also the formal structures of the French dance form. In Fa Op.X N.5 - Rv 442, F.Vi-1 - Tomo 46 - . Par VIVALDI ANTONIO. Vivaldi's Concerto in F RV 433 for Flute, Strings, and Basso Continuo. Called in both cases 'La tempesta di mare, ' the work's opening Allegro has a characteristic thumping unison repeated-note theme with the flute soloist trading short lines in imitation with the orchestral violins in the outer sections and warbling maniacally above the ripieno in the central episodes. The opening closes on a big half cadence and then moves into the quiet central Largo, with the flute soloist becalmed in the eye of the storm and haunted by memories and ghosts. From Fancies Pour Piano-This Sérénade is the first of 7 pieces collectively called 'Fancies' originally written for piano in 1915.Gabriel Marie Grovlez (1879-1944) was born in Lille Northern France in 1879 and died in war-torn Paris in 1944. From among his teachers who include Gédalge and Lavignac Fauré must surely rank as his strongest influence and this is readily heard in his small but significant oeuvre of solo piano pieces as well as his music for stage and chamber ensembles. Interestingly most of the piano music was published over a period of around a dozen years (1907-1919) and in the lull between these works and his Impressions (two pieces) of 1934 Grovlez wascompositionally preoccupied with songs and chamber pieces many of which languish patiently on the shelf awaiting a wholehearted appraisal. There is as well as his notable penchant for elegance and poetical lyricism a considerable wit to enjoy too (take Les nes The Donkeys from L'Almanach aux images for example) and indeed the fact that Grovlez's middle years were spent fulfilling the duties of assistant conductor and choir leader of the Opéra-Comique seems especially revealing of the man's musical personality and capacity for successfully intertwining serious and less serious genres.Grovlez was quite a cosmopolitan character; besides making a notable mark in his native country (he was latterly a professor of chamber music at the Paris Conservatoire) he travelled to the United States and Africa as well as across Europe. Although we tend to remember Grovlez today for his influence primarily as a composer in the mould of Fauré or Debussy bringing a quirky quality to some of his writing more than occasionally reminiscent of Poulenc it was as a conductor that Grovlez initially made an impact. Moreover we should not overlook the fact that he gave the inaugural performances of some highly treasured works by the likes of Ravel (Ma Mère l'Oye) and Fauré (Dolly Suite) a piano duet which has earned an especially important

'Verse 1' marks the beginning of a more ambitious and intense style of composition. The ideas are relatively simple and develop gradually in a cyclic fashion within a one movement sectional design. Progressively faster tempi leadto the main climax of the work near the end of the piece. Then a short coda leads to a very quiet ending and a return to the original tonal centre of C.Quoting composer:'In April 1975 I occupied a flat in Aldeburgh Suffolk near the seafront. As a member of the English Chamber Orchestra I had come to work for a week on a recording of Britten’s opera ‘Death in Venice’ so the real and suggested sound of the sea was in my ears so to speak for dayson end. A few weeks later when I started work on 'Verse 1' it became clear in the first few bars that I was recalling and suggesting the sea and the beach at Aldeburgh. I am not aware of any direct influence from Britten’smusic but I do however quote a small fragment from a theme to be found in a piano quartet by Mahler played early in the piece by the flute (bars 6 & 7).This work was awarded the First Prize in the Viotti InternationalCompetition for composers in Italy in 1975.
