When the group approached me about writing a piece, I had just finished reading Pieces of Light; The New Science of Memory by Charles Fernyhough, and it struck me that a work inspired by memories and how they are created in our brains would be very appropriate for a group of musicians celebrating such a wonderful milestone. A quote by Nabokov in particular provided ideas for both the rapid, rhythmic music that starts and ends the piece and the slow, 'light-filled' chords of the middle section: [In Nabokov's autobiography, Speak, Memory, he sees] 'the awakening of consciousness as a series of spaced flashes, with the intervals between them gradually diminishing until bright blocks of perception are formed, affording memory a slippery hold.' In addition, this work has really been shaped by the recorders themselves: before writing, I spent several hours with Ian Wilson (a member of the group) learning about the myriad different types of instrument I could write for. The renaissance instruments particularly appealed due to their fabulous timbre, despite the fact that, due to their open hole design, diatonic music works much better than anything chromatic. I became rather obsessed with the idea of writing chromatic music for diatonic instruments, and so in this piece I use recorders at both modern (A440) and baroque (A415, a semi-tone lower) pitch. The Spiders' Revenge is a short music-theatre work (duration about 25 minutes) designed for performance by primary school children. The work was written for Evie Primary School a small rural school in Orkney of about 60 pupils between the ages of five and eleven and was specially devised to enhance an environmental studies project on 'mini-beasts'. All the pupils in the school took part in the first performance. Two children playing in a garden delight in tormenting ladybirds snails spiders and other living creatures who they claim 'have no right to be'. The spiders teach the children a salutary lesson during the course of which they learn a great deal aboutthe ways of these creatures finally recognizing the wonder of the insect world and acknowledging that all 'have their place on the earth'.The songs include simple recorder and percussion parts and guitar chords. Exercises For Advancing Players. Par STAEPS HANS ULRICH. These exercises are written to improve finger, articulation and breathing technique as well as to increase in speed. They can be used on treble recorders with either German or English fingerings. As daily exercises, when mastered completely, they should be played through in 40 minutes all together. At each stage compare the time taken with the figure in seconds given at the end of each exercise, and aim at the performance of the complete book within the prescribed time. Of course, any part of it may be used as practice material and in your own time. If nothing else is mentioned, play both legato as well as staccato. The player will notice that each exercise has its own individual structure, melodically, rhythmically or harmonically - he/she is advised to trace and consider these musical features. The mastering of the instrument is reached only when the printed music is formally and harmonically completely absorbed and freely expressed while playing. The composition and the order of the exercises are based on the author's long experience as a teacher. Par BONSOR BRIAN. The best way to learn any instrument is to have lessons from a good, experienced teacher. Although, happily, the number of such teachers is constantly growing, the recorder is still frequently taught by enthusiastic but inexperienced teachers and many players start by teaching themselves. This series of books sets out to help learners of all ages in all three situations. Experienced teachers, who may choose to disregard much of the text as personal demonstration is always clearer than the written word, will find exercises and fine tunes a-plenty to support their own mathod at each stage. The less experienced willbenefit from many valuable teaching hints culled from long experience and may rely on the books to lead to a sound playing technique and a mastery of simple notation. Those learning by themseves - and I started in this way - are urged to work carefully and systematically through the books, taking plenty of time to assimilate each point before moving on. For them, without the personal model provided by a live teacher, it is vitally important to listen as often as possible to fine players, in person or on record, so that they have in their mind's ear a clear notion of the kind of sound they would like to produce. But however they start, I can only wish that all who use these books will derive as much pleasure and musical satisfaction and gain as many lasting and valued friendships as I have through this most subtle, delightful and sociable of instruments.
