This beautiful setting of the psalm for Holy Thursday is enhanced by the addition of optional violin, flute, and clarinet. Keyboard and guitar round out the accompaniment as female and male cantors intone the refrain. Orin has structured the verses with an interplay between the cantors, while the SAB choir offers gentle vocal support on neutral syllables. The overall sound is lush and mesmerizing.

When you first listen to this arrangement, if you are like us, you will be captivated by the charming playfulness between the piano and clarinet. The writing for women’s voices is accessible, but quite effective. The most challenging aspect of the piece likely will be coordinating the ensemble of the instrumentalists, as the forward-spinning, 16th-note figures must move at a brisk and even pace.

This gentle piece is a paraphrase of Psalm 138, a psalm that unites us with the angels in praise of God’s goodness and greatness. The choral parts in verses 2 and 3 are optional, they work just as well with a single voice. There are many occasions, inside and outside of liturgical worship settings, when this piece would be appropriate.
