Traditional form meets modern melody: Raaf Hekkema's 'Suite' is based on the classical form of Bach's French dance suite with Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Saraband, Minuet, and Gigue. Hekkema gives each movement its own modern character: The Prelude is based on a free melody, like the tradition librement opening of a French suite for lute from the 17th century. In the Allemande, an improvisatory melody develops over an ostinato bass whereas the Courante is a fast, softly swinging movement. The Saraband with multiphonic chords resembles a thoughtful etude, and the Minuet plays with the complexity of three long musical eras. The final dance, the Gigue, turns out to be really 'funky'.

Celebratory in nature, Prelude to a Pageant includes a famous musical link to The Reading Rota (Sumer is icumen in), a manuscript dating from around 1240, discovered nearby Reading Abbey. This lively tune appears early in the work, after an arresting, rhythmic opening and expressive slower section, and also forms the final climax.

Ameri can Prelude was commissioned by the United States Marine Band “The President's Own†and was composed in honor of the retirement of Colonel Jason K. Fettig, the 28th Director of the USMB. This short and energetic work features subtle hints to two of my favorite American composers, Aaron Copland and John Williams. The performance at Colonel Fettig's final concert with the Marine Band was the world premiere, given at the annual Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois on December 20st, 2023.
