Saint-Saëns's Christmas Oratorio (or Oratorio de Noël) was written in 1858 when he was just 23. This piece was originally scored for five Vocal Soloists Chorus Harp String Quartet and Organ; this the vocal score contains a piano reduction. The Christmas Oratorio opens with a Prelude subtitled 'In the style of Sebastian Bach' harkening back to Bach's Christmas Oratorio. This opening prelude sets the scene for the Christmas story: its lilting pastoral quality creates images of the shepherds tending their flocks in the fields. In the remaining movements the vocal soloists take turns representing different characters such as the narrator ofthe story or as the angel who announces the birth of the baby Jesus while the chorus represents a multitude of angels singing to the glory of the Lord. The final movement of the piece which follows the model of old French Christmas songs is a virtual hymn of praise of all creation in the presence of God.The English version of the text is by N.H. Dole.

Oratorio in three parts The oratorio “Athalia” tells the Old Testament story of the Queen Athalia. Handel composed it in 1733 for Oxford University where it was first performed later that year during the celebrations for the awarding of honorary degrees. The great success of this performance is generally regarded as a reason for Handel’s renewed interest in the oratorio form. As was frequently the case Handel also carried on composing this work after the first performance. Thus for the version which was performed in London in 1735 he introduced numbers in Italian for the Italian singer Carestini in the roleof Joad. He also ended the work with an organ concerto. For the performance in 1756 he drew on other works for the third act. Conversely large parts of the music to Athalia form the basis for other works by Handel such as “Parnasso in festa” (HWV 73) and the Wedding Anthem (HWV 262). The Piano reduction by Andreas Köhs (BA4082-90) based on the Urtext of the “Halle Handel” Edition includes the main version of 1733 together with an appendix containing the versions of 1735 and 1756 as well as the outline of a planned version of 1743 which was not performed. - Based on the Urtext of the “Halle Handel” Edition - Includes all versions - Detailed foreword (Ger/Eng) - Full score (BA4082) and Vocal score (BA4082-90) available for sale - Performance material (BA4082-72) available for hire

The 20 year old Berlioz wrote his Messe solennelle in 1824 his first large scale work for chorus and orchestra. His later Memoirs suggest he burnt the manuscript due to his doubts about its quality. However the manuscript had made its way to Antwerp and the Church of St Carolus-Borromeus where it was catalogued by church officials probably in 1956. But it was not until 1991 when Franz Moors a retired teacher organist and choir master discovered it in a wooden chest on the organ platform and gradually began to realise its status as a work of some significance. The work was published by Bärenreiter in the 'New Berlioz Edition' and modern premieres were givenduring 1993 and 1994. Waisenhaus Mass-Mozart had barely turned twelve when he composed and conducted his Missa solemnis in C minor K.139 to inaugurate a new orphanage on Vienna?s Rennweg in 1768.This astonishing early work adheres to the form of a Neapolitan cantata mass in which the separate movements (?Gloria? ?Credo? etc.) are themselves made up of self-contained choruses ariosos and ensembles. This frequently heard Mass is characterized by a sharp contrast between its cheerful underlying C major mood and gloomy dramatic passages in the minor mode.Urtext of the New Mozart EditionStraightforward piano part in the vocal scoreIdeal for church services andconcert performances Full score & performance material (BA4858) and vocal score (BA4858-90) available for saleArrangement for soloists choir & organ (BA7521) for sale

Despite the pressures of his teaching position Franz Schubert created a particularly large number of works in the year 1815. Besides around 140 new Lieder he composed the second and third symphonies four stage works the first important compositions for piano the String Quartet in G minor (D 173) and two Masses: the Mass in G major (D 167) and the Mass in B-flat major the object of this edition. Considering that the Mass in F major (D 105) was written from May to July 1814 and the Mass in C major (D 452) during June and July 1816 we can see that Schubert composed four of the six complete Mass settings which have survived from his hand within the short span of twoyears. The Mass was presumably first performed in Lichtental shortly after its completion. The fact that some partly autographic parts the organ part three soprano and three alto parts were made around 1820 seems to point to a second performance. And from Schubert’s brother Ferdinand we know that the Mass was performed a third time at the parish church in Hainburg at the beginning of October 1824 since Ferdinand played the organ on that occasion. The Mass was first issued in 1837 as Opus 141 by the Viennese publisher Tobias Haslinger.Urtext of the New Schubert EditionFull score performance material (BA5621) and vocal score (BA5621-90) available for sale
