This critical edition sheds light on the special qualities linking RV 198 (here published for the first time) to the musicians of the Saxon court, and offers the first detailed comparison between two versions of the concerto. Passages of brilliant figuration and finely spun diminutions characterize the solo episodes in the fast movements. An alternative Adagio is included in each of the various formats (scores, keyboard reduction and parts).

In comparison to other works by Kuhnau, the scoring is fairly large with five vocal parts, trumpets, timpani, oboes, and bassoon as well as two violins and violas each. The short performing time, on the other hand, makes the cantata suitable for liturgical use, too.

In a mixture of cantata and concert piece, Beethoven set a hymn to art in his Choral Fantasy. The work, about 20 minutes in length, is often seen as a precursor to the Ode to Joy in the 9th Symphony. After a piano introduction, a dialog between piano and orchestra develops in the space of just 400 measures, before the soloists and chorus enter for the last 200 measures. (If necessary, the solo parts can be sung by members of the chorus or a semi-chorus.) In the main section, headed Finale (beginning with the double basses and celli), the theme from Beethoven's early song Gegenliebe (WoO 118, also used in the Ode to Joy) is presented, varied and finally used in the March in F major. The main source of the Choral Fantasia for the edition is the first edition of the parts, published in 1811 and corrected by Beethoven; alongside this an English edition of the parts published by Clementi (1810) has been consulted for comparison. The edition contains an English singing version in a translation by Natalia Macfarren from the 19th century. Score available separately - see item CA.1039400.

The heroic pastoral Daphnis et Egle was performed only once, on 29 October 1753, for the entertainment of King Louis XV at Fontainebleau and remained unpublished until today. This edition is based on Rameau's autograph manuscript, a copy of the separate parts, and the libretto published by Ballard in 1753. A comparison of the sources reveals two versions of the work: the original version and the one revised for Fontainebleau, whereby the differences lie mainly in the final divertissement. This edition recommends the Fontainebleau version--which is actually more complete in its musical form, in particular with its overture and two ariettas--but also reconstructs the original state of the final divertissement (presented in the appendix) before it was revised.

Robert Schumann's Violoncello Concerto op. 129 can be regarded as the first great concerto for this instrument's repertoire. It is thus somewhat surprising that this work had an extremely problematic reception history at the outset.Schumann wrote the score in 1850, during his Dusseldorf years, but there was neither a concrete occasion nor a soloist for a world premiere. After its publication, more years elapsed before the world premiere. It was only towards the end of the 19th century that Schumann's Cello Concerto finally made its breakthrough as a repertoire piece. The Urtext edition is based on the original print of the parts and the piano reduction, which had still been supervised by Schumann. In addition, the autograph of the score was consulted for purposes of comparison. The internationally renowned soloist Heinrich Schiff took part in the preparation of the edition for violoncello and piano. His experiences have been incorporated into his arrangement of the solo part. With his comments, Schiff also provides valuable tips on the interpretation of the work.A key work of the romantic concerto repertoireThe piano reduction by Robert Schumann contains the unsigned solo part as well as the solo part arranged and annotated by Heinrich Schiff.

The opera “Naïs†was premiered on 22 April 1749 at the Acadmie royale in the Palais-Royal, Paris, in celebration of the signing of the so-called Treaty of Aachen. It was revived again in August 1764 shortly before Rameau’s death and achieved great success as the “opera of peace,†even though it did not appear in print during the composer’s lifetime. In numerous arias Rameau provides his singers ample opportunity to shine, while he reveals his orchestral mastery, in particular in the chaconne and the various other ballets. The work appears here for the first time in a vocal score with a keyboard reduction. The reduction is by François Saint-Yves on the basis of the new critical edition by Pascal Dencheau which is part of Opera Omnia Rameau edited by Sylvie Bouissou. This edition is the result of a meticulous comparison of all known musical sources. In the main section, it presents the version that Rameau approved for the performances of 1749. The appendix contains those passages that the composer cut during the rehearsals in 1749 and all changes that he undertook for the 1764 revival.

Tchaikovsky's Hamburg Symphony in the Urtext
ISBN 9790004344668. 10 x 12.5 inches.
Like Hamlet Overture, originating at about the same time, Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony, composed in 1888, focuses on the human existential question: To be or not to be - triumph over fate or triumph of fate? The per aspera ad astra dramaturgy underlying the symphony culminates in triumphant certainty. If Tchaikovsky was initially euphoric, then severe self-doubts befell him after he conducted the premiere in St. Petersburg. These doubts demonstrably led him to make interpretative changes for the Hamburg performance in 1889, including a cut in the finale. Only with the extremely positive response to this performance did his doubts dispel. Nevertheless, Tchaikovsky himself never again conducted the 5th symphony. It was only posthumously established in the repertoire through Arthur Nikisch's commitment. The new edition's textual criticism takes into account besides the autograph and first edition also the first edition's orchestral parts, together with the piano arrangement produced from the autograph by Sergei Taneyev. In addition to thoroughly clarifying dynamics and articulation, the source comparison also corrected many errors and solved problematical passages, such as, for instance, the trombone entry in m. 372 of the finale. Considered, moreover, for the first time has been the composer's doubts about his work and its ambiguities, frequently successfully suppressed in the history of its performance and reception. Tchaikovsky's conductor's copy is unfortunately lost, hence his alterations made for the Hamburg performance are not precisely known. They have survived only indirectly through remarks that Willem Mengelberg left to posterity, for which he could draw on Tchaikovsky's conductor's score and oral references by the composer's brother Modest. So, anyone wishing to deal seriously with the work's certainties will not be able to do so in the future without having also to deal with its uncertainties.Tch aikovsky's Hamburg Symphony in the Urtext.

This facsimile of an original by Jean-Francois and Pierre Dandrieu is part of our French classical music collection. Editions : P. Dandrieu - Paris 1729. J. F. Dandrieu - Paris 1759. This score also includes Noels de Pierre Dandrieu. The Noels of Pierre and those of his nephew Jean-Francois are very different. Joint publication of both works is therefore quite justified. Preface by: Philippe Lescat: biography of Pierre Dandrieu - the editions of Pierre Dandrieu's Livre de Noels. Jean Saint-Arroman: comparison between the books of Pierre and Jean-Francois Dandrieu. Collection supervised by the musicologist Jean Saint-Arroman, professor at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse of Paris and at the CEFEDEM Ile de France (Training Centre for Music Teachers). A 'Last Night of the Proms' without this march - unthinkable! 'Pomp and Circumstance Military March No. 1' with its middle section, the hymn-like 'Land of Hope and Glory' by Edward Elgar (1857-1934), belongs to the finale of the London music event like the Radetzky March usually played as last piece to the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The fame and popularity of the other four military marches composed by Elgar between 1901 and 1907 fade in comparison to this secret national anthem of Great Britain (although strongly rivalled by 'Rule, Britannia!'). It is, indeed, an equally rousing and catchy piece of music, and the catchy tune in the middle has just become a classical 'hit'. Thanks to the present edition, all those who do not have a large symphony orchestra at home can now play this rousing march by themselves.

The cantata Daran erkennen wir, dass wir in Ihm bleiben is intended for the first Whitsun holiday. It is based on a text by Johann Christoph Wentzel (1659-1723), the yearly volume in which it appears dates to August 4, 1703 and is dedicated to, among others, Hn. Joh. Kuhnau / | Chori Musici bey der | Stadt Leipzig Directori [Herr Joh. Kuhnau / Director of Choral Music at the City of Leipzig]. It can be assumed that Kuhnau's composition originated near the time of the text, thus within his first years in office as the Leipzig St. Thomas cantor. Kuhnau follows the structure of Wentzel's poem in a Dictum and four verses with introductory sonata, although some details are varied. In comparison to other works by Kuhnau, the scoring is fairly large with five vocal parts, trumpets, timpani, oboes, and bassoon as well as two violins and violas each. The short performing time, on the other hand, makes the cantata suitable for liturgical use, too.Audio samples: Opella Musica, camerata lipsiensis, cond. Gregor Meyer (cpo, 2013).

The three grands motets, Quam dilecta, In convertendo and Deus noster refugium, which Jean-Philippe Rameau composed from 1713 to 1715 are still relatively unknown today. Yet these masterworks can stand comparison to the best works of Michel-Richard de Lalande. They are testimony to Rameau's great contrapuntal mastery and contain beautiful lyrical passages. Quam dilecta and Deus noster refugium have survived only in later sources which originated in about 1770, after Rameau's death, and the works have been rendered in a scoring which does not correspond to his intentions. The present new edition attempts for the first time to reconstruct them as closely as possible to their original form. The edition of In convertendo is based on Rameau's autograph score from 1751. Score available separately - see item CA.2100600.
