This set of three pieces was first published in 1905. It includes the 'Adagio in E' a piece popular with organists ever since.

Intrata No 2 was found in a small manuscript book in the library of the Royal College of Music with a dedicated to Sir Walter Adcock on his 80th birthday 29 December 1941. It is a piece that deserves to be included in Howells’s oeuvre.Dated 1969 Flourish for a Bidding was written for the Royal College of Music Centenary Fund was auctioned and bought by Novello & Company. Flourish has a stylistic characteristics in common with Rhapsody No 4 and the Epilogue 1974. St Louis Comes to Clifton was a private publication entitled ‘A Garland for DGAF’ and given to the late Douglas Fox a distinguished one-armed Organist who was Director of Music at Clifton.Herbert Howells is a giantof 20th century Anglican church music the remainder of whose oeuvre is in the process of gaining new appreciation. He left a body of distinguished Organ music of which these three works are interesting examples.

Composer's Note: In writing these pieces I had in mind certain difficulties which worry most organists from time to time; and in order to combine as it were business with pleasure I thought it worthwhile to concentrate upon one aspect of organ technique in each piece even at the risk of making them a little more difficult than others in this series. In Procession the main difficulty lies in the pedals Arabesque on the other hand could hardly have had a simpler pedal part: its object is to exercise the left hand in producing a smooth running semi-quaver pattern Pageant with its cross-rhythms is designed to produce well-disciplinedhands and feet that can when required work in conflicting rhythms. I have kept the registration schemes as simple and straightforward as possible.

With the publication of Rued Langgaard’s preludes and minor pieces for organ in three volumes the contribution made by the composer to this repertoire is being presented in its entirety and all its diversity. The publishers have decided to include as many ofLanggaard’s small pieces for organ as it has been possible to present in an authentic form rather than to carry out a selection based on aesthetic or formalcriteria. The 112 compositions are presented in chronological order in accordance with Bendt ViinholtNielsen’s catalogue of works Rued Langgaard’s Compositions (1991). The intention to include as far as possible all the completed compositions in the edition has resulted inconsiderable editorial challenges. In certain cases Langgaard’s own handwritten manuscripts are so unclear or incomplete that the editors have had to abandon the possibility of arriving at a form of publication that lives up to the strict requirements made by the Rued Langgaard Edition regarding authenticity and a critical approach to the source material. Therefore the editors have made no attempt to include a number of mainly untitled and undated preludes which Langgaard left behind in so loose a notation that publication in anything approaching authentic form is not possible (these pieces are registered in the catalogue of works in the appendix of omitted works as U10-U20).
