Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 5
Sonatas / Trios / Concertos - ed. by Pieter Dirksen
Organ Works Based on Compositions by Bach and Others
Genres such as sonata, trio and concerto were initially uncommon in the keyboard music of the early 18th century. Thus it comes as no surprise that many of the pieces in this volume are arrangements by Bach of original compositions and of works by other composers. Next to the Sonatas BWV 525?530 and the Concertos or concerto movements based on pieces by other composers BWV 592?596, the volume also contains the Trio in D minor BWV 583, the Trio settings BWV 585?587 as well as the early versions of BWV 527 and 528. Moreover, the CD-ROM offers eight arrangements of trio movements by Bach made by others. In his detailed introduction, Pieter Dirksen discusses various aspects of these pieces' origins, inasmuch as they help us better understand the works. The organist will especially welcome the comments on performance practice and registration. It is precisely the fact that these works derive from chamber-music models that leads to individual considerations for each work group.

Par HERCHENRODER MARTIN. 'Toccata and Lament” was composed on commission in 2008 to inaugurate the large new organ in the Christ Church Cathedral, Rochester, NY, USA. This instrument is a detailed reconstruction of a late Baroque organ of 1776 from Vilnius in Lithuania. The point of departure - a clash of contrasting eras and musical cultures on two continents - already bodes excitement. Martin Herchenröder, a composer and professor of music theory, has incorporated these contrasts in his roughly eight-minute composition. The result is a musical idiom of rare distinction, universal in its musical resources and alternating between tonal triads and extremely dissonant clusters. The heart of the piece is a dirge which, using the Baroque doctrine of the affections, relates to Eastern European cultural history in and around Vilnius, a history marked by the predations of 20th-Century war./ Répertoire / Orgue

Admitted to Queens College Cambridge with an Organ scholarship Stanford had written a substantial number of compositions including vocal music both sacred and secular and orchestral works before getting involved with the university’s Musical Society. While still an undergraduate Stanford was appointed organist of Trinity College Cambridge.Part of the‘Four Intermezzi Op. 189’ Intermezzo On An Irish Air for Organ is based on the melody of the well-known ‘Londonderry Air’. The B.A.C.H. motif has been known and used for centuries but enjoyed a great revival in the late 19th century as composers paid homage to the composer J.S. Bach. It derives from the German nomenclature and is expressed in standard notation as Bb-A-C-B. The Fantasia And Fugue On B.A.C.H. is one of the most famous Organ works of Franz Liszt (1811-1886). The piece was intended for the inauguration of the famous Ladegast Organ at Merseburg Cathedral but sadly it wasn’t finished in time. Liszt then revised the work in 1870 and produced the version that survives today. A well-loved piece no organist’s library iscomplete without it.

This work is one of the most important organ compositions of the end of the nineteenth Century. It was written in the years 1894/95 though the earliest fragments date back to 1890. These had their origins in improvised Magnificat versets played by Widor at the inauguration of the Cavaillé-Coll organ of St. Ouen in Rouen. This new edition of the Wiener Urtext edition is based upon the first edition (no manuscript scores have survived) and on further editions published during Widor’s lifetime.A recording made in 1932 of Widor’s own playing has been studied in conjunction with the printed source materials. The varied ending played on that recording isincluded as an alternative. It bears witness to the composer’s improvisational treatment of his own work and the spirit in which the whole composition was originally conceived.

The Fantasia for Organ has been described as both ‘fleshy in its Romanticism’ and also by the composer as ‘quite severe in parts’ an apt combination for the vast changes of the beginning of the post-War era.York Bowne was a British composer whose fifty-year career musical career spanned much of the 20th century. Bowen was not only a prolific composer he was also a pianist conductor Organist Violinist and Horn player. He premiered many important works and his own music was featured many times at the Proms among other concert series. Sir Henry J Wood believed Bowen had never received proper recognition and Camille Saint-Saens regarded him as the ‘finest of Englishcomposers’ early in his career. His compositional style changed little throughout his life so that his later oeuvre was less celebrated than his earlier works as music fashion had moved on.

'Mors et vita' - death and life. This antithesis opens a stanza of the ancient 11th-century Easter sequence 'Victimae paschali laudes', where life and death are locked in mutual struggle. Zsigmond Szathmary's 12-minute composition of 2015, commissioned for the Freiburg Minster, interprets this primal human experience with mighty explosions of sound. Here the organ can show what it's capable of: its grandeur and strength are fully exploited, but not at the expense of soft and gentle contrasts. Typical of Szathmary's compositional style is the alternation of seemingly improvised, recitative-like writing and passages in strict rhythm. Time and again the composer takes up elements from the church hymn 'Christ ist erstanden von der Marter alle' (Christ the Lord is risen again). / Orgue
