Ayres set two verses from a children's poem by the Danish lyric poet and theologian N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872). It tells of the shining star of Christmas. In double-choir structure, alternating between female and male-voice choir, Ayres depicts the shining of the star leading in a great intensification to a magnificent radiating effect. The mainly homophonic work remains in a tonal A major throughout, but contains surprises with some abrupt individual modulations which require secure intonation. It is suitable for both Advent concerts and for Christmas or Epiphany services. For ease of performance the whole piece contains a singable German and English translation.

The Quintet for Piano and String Quartet was written for the American String Quartet in the summer of 2000. It is in one movement but has two distinct parts. The first is a slow movement characterized by dotted rhythms. It is a fantasy with some long flowing lines interrupted by short fragments usually in the piano. After a rather agitated section in 6/8 time, this section comes to a quiet close on a G-sharp major chord. The second section of this thirteen-minute work is marked Fast and Energetic. It begins with chords that recur throughout the movement and after two measures a long main theme is introduced which is developed and altered during the rest of the fast portion of the work. One could call this second part a sort of rondo form since this long lyrical theme returns always after contrasts. When it does return, it is treated often by means of imitation, but at the climax returns played in unison by the strings while the piano renders an energetic sixteenth note background. The work ends on an E-flat major chord though the piece is certainly not in any one key, but rather features quick modulations. One might call this non-tonal music which nevertheless always feels like it has a tonal center. --Samuel Adler.

Antonio Vivaldi composed not only instrumental music, but also vocal music with equal sensitivity and enjoyment for the girls at the Ospedale della Pieta in Venice. The Laudate Dominum RV 606 dates from this period. This choral piece is simple and homophonic, but through multiple modulations into distant keys it acquires its own very special charm. Accents are placed in typically Vivaldian style, individual words emphasized, and the venerable psalm text is accordingly given a new kind of meaning by the composer.

Italian composer, Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) is well-known for his Keyboard compositions. His 555 Keyboard Sonatas remain ever popular to this day, and Jean-Pascal Post's arrangement for the Clarinet of ten of these loved works are indispensable for aspiring clarinetists. Originally composed for the Harpsichord, Organ or early Pianoforte, the Sonatas display the riveting use of discords and unconventional modulations to remote keys. It is also thought that much of Scarlatti's Keyboard music contains influences of Iberian music, considering that he spent much of his working life in the service of the Spanish and Portuguese royal families. Post's transcription of ten Sonatas for Clarinet include Sonata K. 9. Post's arrangements for Clarinet enhance the lyricism and melodic invention of the Sonatas as well as enabling the student to study ornamentation and articulation. Bearing in mind that Domenico Scarlatti was a highly competent and popular musician in his day, so much so that he was employed in the service of two royal families, his Sonatas are composed with much experience, understanding and expertise, and Post's arrangement of these for Clarinet create an essential addition to the repertoire of all clarinetists..

This setting is characterized by the use of Gregorian chant and melodious lines. The simple, sonorous and melodic treatment, even in the individual voice parts, with its accompanying piano figuration, is reminiscent of the treatment of Gregorian chant in French choral music of the 19th century. But Matsushita has found a tonal language entirely his own, with the use of sparsely employed modulations, short, flashing dissonances (especially between the melodies of the choir and the piano accompaniment), and through the surprising use of chromatic intervals. The piece is quite accessible for all girl's and women's choirs, and the piano accompaniment can also be performed by an organ.
