Par HIROSE HAYATO. For this work, the Japanese composer Hayato Hirose dug deep into his own imagination to fi nd the right inspiration. It is about a young boy who dreams about reaching paradise (Arcadia) and sets out on a journey to find it. This journey is long and treacherous, but despite the many challenges he faces, the boy finally does reach his Arcadia. Cantata for the Feast of St. Michael. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir (Lord God, we praise Thee all of us) BWV 130 Cantata for the Feast of St. Michael Composed for Michaelmas, 1724, Bach's cantata 'Herr Gott dich loben alle wir' belongs to the cycle of chorale cantatas which uses a hymn, as perhaps various preachers also did, to interptet the ideas of the Biblical texts. The hymn used here, composed by Paul Eber in 1554, has twelve stanzas. Texts for two recitatives and two arias were written to go with each of stanzas 2 to 10. Bach used the first stanza as a processional, and the last two stanzas were made into a concluding chorale withthe original text. - Urtext of the New Bach Edition/ Répertoire / Partition de Poche

'Le Voyage Dans La Lune is a continuous orchestral score of approximately 14 minutes comprising two outer fast sections and a slower inner section of a dream-like character. The work is directly inspired by the film Le Voyage Dans La Lune (1902) written and directed by the pioneering French film-maker Georges Méliès. Méliès was influenced by 19th century interests in science and discoveries as well as the science fiction of Jules Verne. At the same time his work seems fantastic surreal and satirical. Some critics point out an underlying critique of colonial adventuring. The plot centres on a group of astronomers who decide tolaunch a rocket to the moon containing a handful of their number. They reach the moon (famously landing on the moon?s face) and then encounter a strange race of aliens whom they battle and destroy. The return to earth involves a dramatic descent a plunge into the ocean and then celebratory dancing. The film inhabits a surreal and dream-like space and uses an idiosyncratic visual language which transforms reality. This inspired an active musical response in my own score which is by turns abrupt smooth lyrical and violent and expresses something of the strange shifting surfaces and multiple and layered tempos evident in the film. The canons in the horns in the first scene reflect the intense arguments of the astronomers as they consider the project. The slower inner section is inspired by the scenes of the industrial City viewed from its rooftops by the astronomers. It also expresses the wonder of the astronomers as they see the earth rise from the perspective of the moon after their arrival there. The music of the final section is in places conflicted reflecting the violent encounters with the moon?s inhabitants. It moves into a more harmonious phase at the close to match the celebrations upon the astronomers? return from their adventuring. The music could be considered to be a surreal mini-opera

Interesting harmonization and lots of attention to dynamics and articulations make it a good choice for the final piece at your young band’s first festival appearance. You may also wish to consider HONOR AND GLORY for an elementary or Jr. High massed band festival for many of these same reasons. This ?Suite' is not one of my 'epic' instrumental concertos such as the concertos for cello, violin or oboe, but a substantially smaller-structured series of dance forms arranged into a suite. Sunken worlds suddenly emerge here, only to reach the surface, hover in dangerously distorted fashion and then sink back to the bottom.Almost every individual movement allots the solo flute a specific tonal colouring and an instrumental group from the orchestra: in the opening Allemande, the flutes of the orchestra (including alto and bass flute and later also piccolo to include the entire flute family) - the string section in the Sarabande - in both chorales (extremely muted in the first and brutalist in the second), the brass etc. - and it is only in the concluding Badinerie that all orchestral groups are combined, although they are terraced in the Baroque style, one following another, seldom all playing simultaneously.This permits the flute to remain the provider of all impulses - it attaches itself to the wide variety of instrumental colours, becomes suffused with these colours and thereby shines in different lights - acerbic, pale and radiant. This first performance marks the conclusion of my two-year residence with the Cleveland Orchestra. The immense versatility of this fine body of sound (which is indeed treated as such with the sum of its parts) and the exciting dark timbre of its principal flautist Joshua Smith have to a great extent determined the form and tonal character of my Flûte en suite. Par DE HAAN JAN. This substantial work by Jan de Haan explores the many tonal qualities of the brass band. Following a quiet opening theme based on Phrygian tonality the band bursts into life with a massive climax. Following a jolly second theme characterised by large interval jumps peace and quiet is again restored. Both themes are developed with many poignant solo figures until we reach a resounding fortissimo climax with the solo cornet performing the first theme from the back of the auditorium.
