Robert W. Smith has chosen three castles and several colorful characters known for legendary deeds from Irish history and folklore to put to music. The use of tinwhistle, the Irish drum bodran and hints of traditional Irish melodies add ethnic authenticity and fascination to the performance of this work. The composer writes: The piece is in three movements: the first movement present three different types of music juxtaposed meeting in the end in a chaotic brutal sound. The second movement is the longest consisting of an expressive opening and a gradual build-up of an exstatic motoric motion until a climax; the opening then comes back and the music dies away. The third movement is a very short pianissimo echo. The primary focus of the piece is the element of sound. Polyphony is absent and the instruments are always 'packed together' playing in a very narrow register merging into a dense monophonic or occasionally heterophonic sound. The harmony is based on dronesand the tonality is G# modulating only once (in the climax of the second movement) and all the motivic material is derived from a kind of G#-Phrygian scale. All in all this gives associations to the sound-world of oriental ethnic music.

Shawn Okpebholo?s Heritage, in the Edition Peters Concert Band Series, evokes moods, events and sounds (including West African drumming and indigenous melodies) from an ethnomusicological research visit the composer undertook to Nigeria. One of the primary musical themes of the work is an adaptation of a song that comes from the Esan people, a small ethnic group in the southern part of Nigeria and the tribe to which the composer has deep historical and family ties. The Esan language is poetic in nature and, at various moments in the work, the musicians chant the text from an Esan song: Ekine leleyea do obhimen la doeki nalo (My investment in you is paid off. Because of your hard work, your future is bright). Heritage is a revised version of a work previously entitled This is Africa, which was commissioned by Professor Marcellus Brown and the Boise State University Symphonic Winds for the 2011 National CBDNA Convention and is dedicated to the memory of Dr Harry Begian. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Répertoire / Concert Band

On 11 December 2014 several young musicians from the Afghanistan National Institute of Music were performing at the Istiqlal School home to the French Cultural Centre in Kabul. The venue was targeted by a suicide bomber with devastating results leaving a number of students (and ANIM’s founder and Director Dr. Ahmad Sarmast) with severe injuries. Despite these most challenging of circumstances ANIM continues to provide an extraordinary learning environment for all its students regardless of gender ethnicity or social circumstances. They are committed to assuring musical rights rebuilding lives through music training future music educators establishing intercultural dialogue and to reviving and preserving Afghan Music. Gulistan-e Nur: The Rosegarden of Light is dedicated with great admiration to Dr. Ahmad Sarmast and to the students and staff of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Kabul particularly remembering those who were injured in the 11 December attack.
