The Soldier?s Wife (L?épouse du soldat) est une pièce courte et simple commandée par le Ministère singapourien de l'Education. Cette œuvre a été initialement écrite comme pièce imposée pour le Festival de la Jeunesse se déroulant à Singapour en 2012. Comme de nombreuses formations scolaires présentent quelques lacunes au niveau de certains pupitres Jan van der Roost a été sollicité afin de composer une œuvre qui pourrait également être jouée par une formation incomplète - ce qui explique le doublement de certaines parties et les voix optionnelles.Cette œuvre concise débute par une chaleureuse et expressive mélodie : la femme du soldat chante une sorte deberceuse. Ce passage lyrique est suivi d?une partie plus puissante qui est cependant basée sur le même matériel thématique. Le rythme parfois syncopé insuffle à cette partie de l?œuvre une énergie toute particulière. La trame harmonique elle aussi subit quelques surprenantes contorsions sans jamais dépasser les limites imposées par le degré de difficulté de la pièce. Cette composition commence doucement et gentiment et se termine par un motif empreint d?un dynamisme singulièrement féminin.

This Simple Symphony is entirely based on material from works which the composer wrote between the ages of nine and twelve. (The actual sources are given in footnotes to each movement.) Although the development of these themes is in many places quite new, there are large stretches of the work which are taken bodily from the early pieces - save for the re-scoring for strings. It is suitable for string quartets or string orchestras, being scored for Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello and Double Bass.

In 2005 it was 400 years ago that the first volume of the world-famous novel ‘El ingenioso hidalgo don Quichote de La Mancha’ written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616) was published. Don Quichote a nobleman who is under the delusion that he must fight against injustice starts out on a journey with his steed Rosinante and his peasant squire Sancho Panza and experiences all kinds of remarkable adventures. In the course of them his love for the lady Dulcinea of Tobosco plays an important role. One of the most famous scenes is that of his fight against windmills on the plain of La Mancha which he takes to be enormous evil giants. ‘DonQuichote’ consists of four short pieces: 1. Don Quichote: the ingenious Spanish nobleman. 2. Dulcinea: the lady with whom this errant knight has an imaginary courtly love affair. 3. Sancho Panza: Don Quichote’s loyal and sensible servant who compared to his master is a simple soul. 4. Rosinante: the steed that has much to put up with considering it has a rider who often spends more time on the ground than in the saddle.

A joyous Hymn and Dance-Viva La Musica - Hymne et danse joyeux - est une pétillante pièce d?une durée approximative de 3?20?. Elle se compose de deux parties : un hymne festif au thème récurrent et une danse dans le style d?une gigue enlevée.
