Hans Werner Henze, adhering to his intentions as a composer and teacher, had already made provision for participation by a ,banda' of amateur musicians in the original version of his arrangement of Giovanni Paisiello's Don Chisiotte (1769) which was given its first performance in 1976 at the first Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte in Montepulciano. The movements contained in the opera were combined in a suite. Norbert Studnitzky has arranged the pieces for wind band in the orchestration which is internationally recognized. Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Mörschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead’s special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career.The village ofMörschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer’s Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written, at Steven Mead’s suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. Edward Kennedy ‘Duke’ Ellington’s influence on the swing era as musician, bandleader and composer is unparalleled. His arrangement of his own composition It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing) is perhaps the first to carry the word ‘swing’ in the title, thereby coining a musical phrase. Toshio Mashima’s stylish arrangement of this jazz standard for concert band hits the perfect note. La Traviata is one of the most well-known operas by Giuseppe Verdi.The story of the opera depicts the conflict between free love and bourgeois morality. The young poet Alfredo and the Parisian courtesan Violetta fall in love with each other. They are happy together for a while, but Violetta gives up Alfredo, at the request of his father, to save the honor of his family. Only when it’s too late are the two reunited, with Violetta suffering from tuberculosis and dying in the arms of her lover. La Traviata Highlights consists of three movements, which can be performed as one large work, but can also be played separately. It makes use of many beautiful dance melodies and delightfulmoving arias from this captivating opera. La Traviata is een van de bekendste opera’s van Giuseppe Verdi. Washed up on the Phaeacian shore after a shipwreck, Odysseus is introduced to King Alcinous. As he sits in the palace, he tells the Phaeacians of his wanderings since leaving Troy. Odysseus and his men fi rst landed on the island of the Cicones wherethey sacked the city of Ismarus. From there, great storms swept them to the land of the hospitable Lotus Eaters. Then they sailed to the land of the Cyclopes. Odysseus and twelve of his men entered the cave of Polyphemus. After the single-eyed giantmade handfuls of his men into meals, Odysseus fi nally defeated him. He got him drunk and once he had fallen asleep, he and his men stabbed a glowing spike into the Cyclop’s single eye, completely blinding him. They escaped by clinging to the belliesof some sheep. Once aboard, Odysseus taunted the Cyclop by revealing him his true identity. Enraged, Polyphemus hurled rocks at the ship, trying to sink it. After leaving the Cyclopes’ island, they arrived at the home of Aeolus, ruler of the winds.Aeolus off ered Odysseus a bag trapping all the strong winds within except one - the one which would take him straight back to Ithaca. As the ship came within sight of Ithaca, the crewmen, curious about the bag, decided to open it. The winds escapedand stirred up a storm. Odysseus and his crew came to the land of the cannibalistic Laestrygonians, who sank all but one of the ships. The survivors went next to Aeaea, the island of the witch-goddess Circe. Odysseus sent out a scouting party butCirce turned them into pigs. With the help of an antidote the god Hermes had given him, Odysseus managed to overpower the goddess and forced her to change his men back to human form. When it was time for Odysseus to leave, Circe told him to sail tothe realm of the dead to speak with the spirit of the seer Tiresias. One day’s sailing took them to the land of the Cimmerians. There, he performed sacrifi ces to attract the souls of the dead. Tiresias told him what would happen to him next. He thengot to talk with his mother, Anticleia, and met the spirits of Agamemnon, Achilles, Patroclus, Antilochus, Ajax and others. He then saw the souls of the damned Tityos, Tantalus, and Sisyphus. Odysseus soon found himself mobbed by souls. He becamefrightened, ran back to his ship, and sailed away. While back at Aeaea, Circe told him about the dangers he would have to face on his way back home. She advised him to avoid hearing the song of the Sirens; but if he really felt he had to hear, thenhe should be tied to the mast of the ship, which he did. Odysseus then successfully steered his crew past Charybdis (a violent whirlpool) and Scylla (a multiple-headed monster), but Scylla managed to devour six of his men. Finally, Odysseus and hissurviving crew approached the island where the Sun god kept sacred cattle. Odysseus wanted to sail past, but the crewmen persuaded him to let them rest there. Odysseus passed Circe’s counsel on to his men. Once he had fallen asleep, his men impiouslykilled and ate some of the cattle. When the Sun god found out, he asked Zeus to punish them. Shortly after they set sail from the island, Zeus destroyed the ship and all the men died except for Odysseus. Dort bringt Odysseus Opfer, um die Seelen der Toten anzurufen. Teireisas sagt ihm sein Schicksal voraus. Dann darf Odysseusmit seiner Mutter Antikleia und den Seelen von Agamemnon, Achilles, Patroklos, Antilochus, Ajax und anderen Toten sprechen. Dann sieht er die Seelen der Verdammten Tityos, Tantalos und Sisyphos. Bald wird Odysseus selbst von den Seelen gequält, kehrtvoll Angst zu seinem Schiff zurück und segelt davon. In Aiaia hatte Kirke ihn vor den drohenden Gefahren der Heimreise gewarnt. Sie riet ihm, den Gesang der Sirenen zu vermeiden, wenn er aber unbedingt zuhören müsse, solle er sich an denMast seines Schiff es bindet lassen, was er dann auch tut. Dann führt Odysseus seine Mannschaft erfolgreich durch die Meerenge zwischen Skylla und Charybdis, wobei Skylla jedoch sechs seiner Männer verschlingt. Schließlich erreichen Odysseusund die überlebende Besatzung die Insel, auf der der Sonnengott Helios heiliges Vieh hält. Odysseus will weitersegeln, aber seine Mannschaft überredet ihn zu einer Rast. Odysseus erzählt ihnen von Kirkes Warnung, aber kaum, dass ereingeschlafen ist, töten die Männer in gotteslästerlicher Weise einige Rinder und verspeisen sie. Als Helios dies entdeckt, bittet er Zeus, sie zu bestrafen. Kurz nachdem sie die Segel für die Abreise von der Insel gesetzt haben, zerstört Zeusdas Schiff und alle außer Odysseus sterben. Les survivants sortent ensuite cachés sous le ventre de ses brebis et regagnent leurs bateaux. Faisant preuve d’orgueil, Ulysse crie sa véritable identité au risque de faire sombrer son navire sous une pluie de rochers. Ulysse aborde l’île d’Eolie, au royaume du maître des vents. Eole offre Ulysse un vent favorable pour regagner Ithaque, et une outre renfermant tous les vents contraires. Hélas, la curiosité des marins d’Ulysse aura raison de cet heureux dénouement car, en ouvrant l’outre, les vents contraires s’échappent et déchaînent une nouvelle tempête. Après avoir dérivé plusieurs jours, ils parviennent chez les Lestrygons cannibales qui détruisent l’escadre. Les survivants reprennent la mer avec un unique navire et abordent dans l’île d’Aiaié, séjour de la magicienne Circé. Ulysse envoie des éclaireurs dans les terres. Imprudemment entrés dans la demeure de la magicienne, ils sont transformés en pourceaux. Seul Ulysse échappe au sortilège gr ce l’antidote que lui indique Hermès. Vaincue, Circé s’offre au héros et rend ses compagnons leur forme humaine. Avant de laisser partir Ulysse, Circé lui conseille d’aller au pays des morts consulter l’ombre du devin Tirésias. Après une journée de navigation, le bateau d’Ulysse atteint le pays des Cimmériens. Il s’acquitte des rites appropriés pour pouvoir s’entretenir avec l’ me.

March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8- to 18-year-olds (held inCamposilvano in 2019) which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was ‘science fiction’, so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromaticfigures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A further change ofkey introduces a legato ‘trio’ melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting thefirst two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.March of the Robot Army werd geschreven in opdracht van Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi voor Campobanda 2019: de financiering werd mogelijk gemaakt door JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is een Italiaans zomermuziekkamp vooracht- tot achttienjarigen (dat in 2019 werd gehouden in Camposilvano) met elk jaar een ander thema. Het thema voor 2019 was sciencefiction, dus besloot componist Philip Sparke een robotmars te schrijven. Na een grilligeinleiding met trompetsignalen en chromatische motieven verschijnt het hoofdthema in mineur op klarinet en tenorsax, waarna het door het hele orkest wordt overgenomen. Een verandering van toonsoort kondigt een nieuw thema aan, weeringeleid door de trompet en herhaald door het volledige ensemble. Een verdere toonsoortverandering introduceert een legato ‘triomelodie†boven een nogal robotachtige begeleiding: er worden stapsgewijs instrumenten toegevoegd totde muziek uitmondt in een hoogtepunt. Das italienische Sommermusikcamp Campobanda für 8- bis18-Jährige fand 2019 in Camposilvano statt und hat jedes Jahr ein anderes Motto. 2019 lautete das Thema Science Fiction“, daher entschied sich der Komponist Philip Sparke dazu, einen Robotermarsch zu schreiben. Nach einerskurrilen Einleitung mit Trompetenrufen und chromatischen Figuren erklingt in Klarinetten und Tenorsaxophonen das Hauptthema in Moll, das dann vom gesamten Orchester aufgegriffen werd. Ein Tonartwechsel kündigt ein neues Thema an,das von der Trompete vorgestellt und anschließend vom gesamten Ensemble wiederholt wird. Ein weiterer Tonartwechsel führt zu einem melodischen, legato gespielten Trio-Abschnitt über einer roboterhaften Begleitung. Nach und nachkommen weitere Instrumente hinzu, bis der Höhepunkt erreicht ist. Kleine Motive aus der Einleitung führen dann zu einer Reprise, wobei die ersten beiden Themen in neuer Gestalt wieder aufgegriffen werden, bevor der Marsch zum Endehin noch einmal musikalisch aufblüht.Ma rch of the Robot Army est une commande de Linda Anzolin et Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi pour Campobanda 2019, gr ce des fonds mis disposition par JUST ITALIA. Destinée aux jeunes de 8 18 ans, Campobanda est une école demusique d’été dont le thème change chaque année. Celui de l’édition 2019 étant « sciencefiction », Philip Sparke décida d’écrire une marche pour robots. Après une introduction insolite rassemblant appels de trompette et figureschromatiques, le premier thème apparaît dans un mode mineur la clarinette et au saxophone ténor avant d’être repris par l’orchestre entier. Un changement de tonalité annonce un nouveau thème, mené par la trompette et repris,encore une fois, par l’orchestre entier. Un autre changement de tonalité introduit une mélodie legato « en trio » sur un accompagnement quelque peu robotique : divers instruments s’y ajoutent progressivement pour aboutir unclimax. Des petits motifs tirés de l’introduction mènent une récapitulation complète qui reprend les deux premiers thèmes sous des formes différentes, avant de conclure la marche avec un bouquet final.

Golden Peak is a concert piece that takes us deep into the world of volcanoes of the Auvergne in central France. They are dormant volcanoes whose origins date back from 7,000 to over 65 million years ago. Among the most well-known are the 80 volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys, a spectacular natural environment ranking among the most fascinating landscapes in the world. The title of this dynamic and rhythmic piece is a reference to the local spa town of Mont-Dore and calls upon all sections of the orchestra. The central theme is very mellow yet riveting and the music depicts both the dynamism and tranquillity of the region.Golden Peak is een concertwerk dat ons meeneemt naar een vulkanische wereld: die van de Auvergne in het midden van Frankrijk. De vulkanen daar zijn slapende; hun oorsprong gaat terug naar 7000 tot meer dan 65 miljoen jaar geleden. Tot de bekendste behoren de tachtig vulkanen van de Chaîne des Puys, een uniek natuurgebied dat tot de boeiendste landschappen van de wereld behoort. Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire.The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. Five States of Change se compose donc de cinq parties égales qui reflètent assez librement ce cycle des émotions. J’ai essayé de faire en sorte que la musique se développe de manière fluide et naturelle, avec un minimum de répétitions. A Little Irish Suite is an original work composed specifically for the Compact Band Series. This series offers smaller ensembles the opportunity to perform original, high-quality works. A Little Irish Suite consists of three movements, all based on Irish folk tunes. Clear structure and crisp harmonies complemented by plain, comprehensible melodies, are characteristic of this piece. It offers conductors the opportunity to work on tone, balance, phrasing as well as on technique with their ensemble. As with all works in the Compact Band Series, A Little Irish Suite features optional parts for instruments that are played less frequently. Conductors can pickand choose the parts needed to best fit the music and the musicians available, to determine the best possible instrumentation for their own ensemble. The duration of six minutes and the large variety and contrast of material played in A Little Irish Suite also make it an ideal selection for competitions or festivals. A Little Irish Suite is an original work composed specifically for the Compact Band Series. This series offers smaller ensembles the opportunity to perform original, high-quality works. A Little Irish Suite consists of three movements, all based on Irish folk tunes. Clear structure and crisp harmonies complemented by plain, comprehensible melodies, are characteristic of this piece. It offers conductors the opportunity to work on tone, balance, phrasing as well as on technique with their ensemble. This piece was commissioned by Japan Ground Self Defense Force Western Army Band. In the programme note for the premiere the composer wrote: I am always impressed by the expansive earth and sparkling ocean scenery when I come to Kyushu. I have met many local people here and they are all expressive and energetic. I wrote this dramatic piece to convey to the whole of Japan the memory of my experience here, swaying in the west wind. I wrote this, hoping that the Self Defense Force will forge closer ties with the community through this piece. Paul and Barry Ryan were identical twin sons of 1950’s pop singer Marion Ryan and were born on 24th October 1948. They were groomed for stardom and had started singing as a duo before their fifteenth birthday. They were signed by Decca in 1965 and brilliantly marketed as clean-cut fashion icons. Their first single ‘Don’t Bring Me Your Heartaches’ reached the UK top twenty but their success as twin performers lasted only three years. In 1968 Barry embarked on a solo career while Paul concentrated on writing and producing. Eloise with its melodramatic vocal style and heavily orchestrated backing was an early success of this new collaboration and went on to be covered by a variety ofartists, including punk legends The Damned.
