John Gordon Cameron (1900-1989) was a British composer who was at one time organist at St Mary’s Cathedral Glasgow and lecturer at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music. His collection of Six Preludes On Hymn Tunes for Organ was dedicated to Bryce Craig. It remains his most popular work with most of the preludes still commonly performed today. The well-known hymn tunes which inspired each piece are Rockingham - Bristol - Capetown - Martyrdom - Tune By Orlando Gibbons - Windsor.

Belgian Organist composer Organ reformer and teacher Guy Weitz was born in Verviers and studied in Paris but fled to London in 1914 at the outbreak of war where he lived the rest of his life. A brilliantly accomplished and respected Organist he was personal Organist to the Archbishop of Westminster and for fifty years was the Organist at the Farm Street Church in Mayfair London.By most accounts he was tricky irascible person who wrote demanding post-Romantic music mostly in the French style including two symphonies for Organ. In Paradisum is one of his lesser-known works beginning in C minor with a series of rising motifs to arrive at a tranquil middle interludescored entirely in the bass clef and ending with an untimed bar of pianissimo echo viole and voix celeste figures before returnting to tempo primo and Orchestral textures. It is a piece that requires some application to get to the heart of perhaps not unlike the composer.

Mendelssohn produced an early work for Organ in 1837, but it was a London music publishing firm who commissioned the first of his mature Organ works. The second half of the commissioned pieces are published in this volume. Mendelssohn himself saved all his manuscripts and they have survived in libraries in Berlin and Krakow, providing the subtitle of this book.Eleven movements are included here, all written in 1844 and 1845. What were originally commissioned as 'Voluntaries' were changed at the composer's request to 'Sonatas'. Whether one considers these movements as drafts and sketches or as distinct musical entities in their own right, the works are not identical to the final, printed versions. For those who appreciate or study the Mendelssohn Organ oeuvre, this volume is of immense interest.While the Organ never completely fell from grace as the instrument of church and religious music, it is the editor's belief that in the century dividing JS Bach from these works of Mendelssohn, fashion and church practice had greatly diminished its importance and few works of real note were produced. This edition containing Italian (Roman) Organ music is the result of studies done at the Vatican Library in Autumn 1977. Among the numerous manuscripts found in Fondo Chigiano there are several sets of manuscripts which consist of Organ and Harpsichord music written between the years 1630 and 1640. These manuscripts are listed in G. Baronci's hand-written catalogue (1929) as Chigi Q IV 24-29. The manuscripts of Q IV 25 contain exclusively works by Frescobaldi: a partita eight toccatas three canzonas and two capriccios along with a recercare (sic.) and an incomplete Recercare Cromatico which is included as no.2 in the present publication. These pieces by Frescobaldicould have been published previously by A. Santani in XIV Composizione inedite di Frescobaldi (Rome 1940); they are not however included in Pidoux's Gesamtausgabe (published by Barenreiter Verlag). Bengt Johnsson has been daring enough to complete this ricercare which is even more advanced than the ricercare from Fiore Musicali (1635); Ricercare Chromaticho post il Credo (Barenreiter edition vl. V p. 34).

The Pedal is at 16' (ad lib 32') unless otherwise indicated (bars 31 37 where a solo 8' is required).III - Sw.II - Gt.I - Pos/Ch Composer's note Esperanza is named after Camp Esperanza (Camp Hope) the location of the mission to rescue the thirty-three miners trappedunderground for seventy days in 2010 at the San Jose Mine in Chile a rescue that was televised live and was one of the most moving and inspiring things I have ever seen. By the most extraordinary coincidence I had already done a good deal of sketching for this Organ piece before this all happened and had determined on a 'darkness-to-light' kind of piece - so the coincidence as well as my feelings of elation were both too strong to ignore.The piece persues a course from a fairly knotty slow beginning (heralded by a few chords that recur at the very end) full of rising themes (another coincidence - the material had already been sketched before the miners were trapped underground) and reaching a loud climax the quick toccata-like second section bursting vigourously out of the tension which is created at the beginning of the work.

The brilliance of Festival Toccata’s surface disguises the fact that one does not need to be a virtuoso to play it well and effectively.Percy Fletcher was an English composer conductor and Orchestrator of prodigious output who made his career in the lively world of the London music theatre of the years of the late 19th and early 20th century. He was music director at many theatres including His Majesty’s Theatre for the last seventeen years of his life. He was the Orchestrator and conductor for the big budget spectacular theatre piece Chu Chin Chowwhich ran for five years a record that remained unbroken for forty years. In addition to his myriad works of light music Fletcher also wrote a serious church cantata The Passion of Christ as well as the delightful children’s work The Walrus and the Carpenter.

Premier enregistrement des oeuvres pour orgue du compositeur ayant vu le jour entre 2002 et 2004. Ecrits pour des instruments d'esthétiques fort différentes (italienne, baroque allemande et symphonique), ces trois cycles ont été composés consécutivement à des séjours ardennais du compositeur. C'est donc tout légitimement que cet enregistrement se place sous le signe de cette région, mettant exclusivement en valeur certains instruments des Ardennes: l'orgue WESTENFELDER de l'église de Membre, petit village des Ardennes belges, l'orgue KOENIG de la basilique Notre-Dame d'espérance de Mézières, l'orgue KoeNIG de l'église St léger de Sedan. / Orgue
