Welcome the yuletide season in jazzy style as Saint Nick meets Benny Goodman and his renowned drummer Gene Krupa. This inventive take on the holiday chestnut Jingle Bells begins with the iconic toms solo launching into the familiar melody. When the full ensemble enters on the chorus, sleigh bells add to the festive mood. After a call-and-response section between the brass and woodwind sections, Jolly Old St. Nicholas makes his appearance to close out the piece!

The bass and percussion sections lay down the classic bolero groove while the rest of the orchestra takes turns playing the lazy, singing, rolling melody. Enjoy a warm, tropical feeling as the orchestra meanders through the key of D major. First violins provide interesting flourishes with both separate and slurred bowings. Parts for bongos, guiro, conga, claves and maracas are included.

This hymn was commissioned by “Antwerpen 93â€. And this city, on the banks of the river Schelde has been nominated “Cultural Capital of Europe†for 1993. The work-group “animatie†took the initiative and commissioned a hymn, which -as the finale to a grand open-air event on 27th March- was premièred by hundreds of musicians from all over Europe. Philippe Langlet (France) was the conductor at this majestic occasion.Musically speaking the piece can no doubt be labeled easy. Indeed it is meant to represent a hymn, playable by all in different instrumental combinations. Consequently a variable instrumentation was chosen and a type of music, which by native is easily accessible anduncomplicated. The conductor is free -in the instrumentation- to score this piece according to his own taste. It is perhaps advisable to use the sharp brass in the forte parts, in order to make the range in the sound of the orchestra as colouful as possible. The percussion parts are not absolutely essential, so that the hymn can also be performed without percussion.

Liszt composed three piano works on Paganini's bell theme. The best known of these works is La Campanella (1851). The Clochette fantasia, that is the Grande Fantaisie de bravoure sur la Clochette de Paganini (1831-1834) as well as the early version of the F sharp minor study, the Campanella (1838) in A flat minor are much less played. Liszt composed a fourth piano work on the campanelle theme. Similar to the preceding it is a series of variations. The second theme is also taken from Paganini: it is the theme of a variation series known with the title The Carnival in Venice.

Gabriel Fauré’s Pavane is certainly one of his most popular compositions. You may, however, be surprised to learn that the premiere of this stylized dance in April 1888 was actually performed in a version for mixed choir rather than the now more familiar orchestral setting or other instrumental arrangement. The text, in the style of Verlaine, sketches the carefree society of the Belle Époque, in particular the various flirtations and dalliances of the dancers. Supplementing the new edition of the version for mixed choir (Carus 10.402/00), Carus is publishing this contemporary version for choir and two piano for four hands. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1040200.
