Song cycle for medium voice and piano based upon the poetry of Ivor Gurney and Leonard Clark. A set of pieces very much in the English lyrical vocal writing tradition of Butterworth Ireland and of course Gurney.'The Pine Boughs Past Music is a song cycle baseed upon poetry associated with Gloucester and was commissioned to celebrate the eightieth anniversary of the Gloucester Music Society. Having purposefully sought inspiration from a wide array of Gloucester poets from Henley to Harvey I finally found inspiration in the poetry of Ivor Gurney whose work is so saturated with the Gloucestershire landscape. In his poetry Idiscovered the essential element I needed to bind the cycle together: the eternal backdrop of nature upon which the poet's thoughts are played out.It would have been quite easy to conclude the set with another poem by Ivor Gurney. However it was to Leonard Clark I turned. Written with an expressive harmonic vocabulary the composer makes use of several traditional sources in creating a mournful mosaic of sound. Schubert Dvorak and the haunting motives of Taps co-mingle togethersupported by delicate piano writing and sections of a cappella writing.

Edward Elgar's They Are At Rest for unaccompanied SATB choir.Described by Elgar as an elegy for unaccompanied chorus this mournful reverent setting was composed for a service commemorating Queen Victoria on the anniversary of her death. The text is by Cardinal John Henry Newman whose poem The Dream of Gerontius was set by Elgar in one of his most enduringly popular works.

A haunting setting of four elegies from the writing of George Mackay Brown composed by Peter Maxwell Davies. Completed in 1998 this powerful and unsettling work is based upon four short verses that explore the more sinister tragic and even supernatural qualities of the oceans and tides. Composed for soloists mixed chorus and Orchestra the work was commissioned by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The work wasfirst performed in December 1998 at Queen's Hall Edinburgh conducted by the composer. The vocal score is available using product code CH61504.

Composed in memory of Don Hinshaw founder of Hinshaw music this influential work is suitable for a number of occasions both sacred and secular. Accessible but contains plenty of melodic and harmonic interest.
