The Phoenix Mass was conceived in 1965 although the Sanctus and Angus Dei were not written down until 1969. As its name implies it marks a resurgence of creative activity after a fallow period. In the wordsof the composer 'It is a record of spiritual rather than denominationally religious experience'.This work (for SATB chorus trumpets and trombones) was first performed by the BBC Chorus and the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble conducted by John Poole in a broadcast on BBC radio 3 on October 2 1973.Score.

Muhly fell in love with Byrd’s setting of the Christmas words Senex Puerum Portabat as a chorister so much that the ‘fluidity of the lines the relentless lilting rhythm and the way Byrd both avoided and cradled the text’ that he was inspired to follow a life in music. Early in his career he set the same text in modern style. The first statement of the words is a capella with ecstatic brass entering in the restatement. The ancient Hodie Christus Natus Est follows on seamlessly in a new mood.Contemporary American composer Nico Muhly is a prolific writer and arranger who at 32 is the youngest composer ever to have been commissioned by the Metropolitan Operain New York. His oeuvre includes two operas and many solo pieces and works for small ensemble Orchestra and Chorus and he has collaborated widely.

Invocation was written for the Choir of The Queen’s College Oxford and represents the culmination of the composer’s time as a research fellow at the college when he worked closely with the choir. Phillip had long been a devotee of Edward Thomas’s evocative poem Adlestrop with its dreamy pastoral feel invoking the very essence of a sultry English country afternoon. It seemed a natural choice to set not least because it mentions the two counties in which he has spent the last seven years Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire. Phillip wanted the workfurther to emphasise the link with everything we might class as a stereotypical English countryafternoon cricket on the green church bells birdsong and warm beer the mythical ‘middle-England’. His work in no way tries to depict this rather to distil the feeling it is a rhapsody on a theme of English country life that men went to war to preserve something very different from the more rugged landscape he grew up with in the Lake District. American composer and conductor, Theodore Morrison, has set this lovely William Butler Yeats' poem filled with Irish musical quotes. As an opera composer, Morrison has a strong grasp on the emotional impact made possible through programmatic music and he uses this in effective ways in this piece.
