Op. 89. Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. The Three Fates or Parcae were the goddesses of fate in Greek-Roman mythology and sang on themes of curse and fate. The Parzenlied in Goethe’s verse drama “Iphigenie auf Tauris” is concerned with these themes and became the model for Johannes Brahms’s setting. Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. During his summer vacation in 1891 Brahms composed six vocal quartets which would appear in print later that autumn. This set, to become Brahms’s opus 112, clearly falls into two groups. The first two in the melancholic tone of the poems Sehnsucht (Longing) and Nächtens (At Night) by Franz Kugler come upon four Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy Lieder) bursting with vitality and power. The first public performances of the work were very positively received. Even while Brahms was still alive, the work was performed not only by the four solo voices originally intended, but also by choruses. Brahms's deeply moving Alto Rhapsody is one of the glories of the choral repertoire. Though it was written as a wedding song for the daughter of his friend Clara Schumann, the work clearly seems a deeply personal one for Brahms. Perhaps, as some have suggested, a melancholy reflection on his own solitary life. This great concert favorite is based on portions of the text of Goethe's Harzreise im Winter (Winter Journey in the Harz Mountains), and set for alto solo, men's chorus, and orchestra. In addition to the Alto Rhapsody, this volume contains three other major Brahms choral works: the Song of Destiny, a setting of a poem by Hölderlin: Nänie, a dirge for Brahms's friend Anselm Feuerbach, set to a text by Schiller: and Song of the Fates, set to passages from Act IV of Goethe's Iphigenie auf Tauris. The reputation of the work is based not only on its unusually concentrated musical structure, but also on the original conception of the text: Brahms assembled important passages from both the Old and New Testaments in Luther’s translation so that thoughts on sorrow and consolation would obviously refer to one another. The first six books each comprised seven songs for voice and piano accompaniment, and Book VII contained the subsequently composed songs nos. 43 to 49 for four-part chorus and piano ad libitum. Brahms had completed his compilation of the books in the winter of 1893/94- however, most of the songs were written earlier.
