Matyas Seiber (1905-1960) was a Hungarian composer who lived and worked in the UK from 1935 until his death. He was born in Budapest and studied with Kodaly and toured the country to collect folk songs. Someof these were later published in 1949 as Three Hungarian Folk Songs with English words by the singer musicologist and self-styled ?Folklorist? A. L. Lloyd (1908-1982).Three Hungarian FolkSongs have been arranged for SAB choir with Piano accompaniment by the pianist and composer Maurice Jacobson (1896-1976). Ernest J Moeran (1894-1950) was an English composer who followed the tradition of R. Vaughan Williams and John Ireland by collecting preserving and using many folk songs mainly from Norfolk Suffolk and Ireland.First published in 1924 Two Songs are both set for High Voice with Piano accompaniment. The first The Bean-Flower is a setting of a poem by Dorothy L. Sayers (1893-1957) which recallsthe scent of the Hawthorn which made the writer fall in love. The second is called Impromptu In March and is a setting of a poem by Doreen A. E. Wallace (1897-1989) a more cheery affair which looks forward tothe coming of Spring.

This English folk song will be recognised instantly by British listeners as the tune formed the first few opening bars of the ‘Radio 4 UK Theme’ an orchestral arrangement of traditional British airs compiled by Fritz Spiegl which was played every morning at the switch-on of BBC Radio 4 for almost 28 years.The lyrics of Early One Morning can be found in publications as far back as 1787 but the well-known melody was not printed until ca. 1855-1859 in William Chappell’s publication of his ‘National English Airs’. Countertenor Voice-Four Traditional Songs is a setting of four heartbreaking and poignant folk songs by virtuoso contemporary composer Nico Muhly. Composed in 2011 the songs deal with themes of death murder and unimaginable events that are emotively arranged for Countertenor Voice and Piano. Commissioned by Carnegie Hall in New York City and Wigmore Hall in London this work was first performed at those renowned venues in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Muhly states that he drew inspiration from old English folksongs and would spend time imagining stylised yet subtle musical settings with accompaniments. The result of this intensiveperiod of listening is Four Traditional Songs which lasts around 15 minutes and carries that incredible sense of sad balladry that counters the occasionally jaunty melodies.
