Description These studies are designed to explore beyond the present limits of Horn technique and are meant to form a contemporary extension to the older studies of Kopprasch, Gallay, Maxime-Aphonse etc. They are therefore written to be very challenging - each Etude concentrates on an immediately identifiable problem of technique and presents it at an almost virtuoso level. This should not put the book 'out of reach' - it is clearly set out and good players can start to become excellent players by practicing these Studies perhaps just a passage at a time at first, hence this book's difficulty rating. The complete pieces should then become a standard part of the advanced player's practice. The classic scale and arpeggio studies of Gabriel Parès were adapted in the 1940s for like-instrument study by Rubank's Harvey Whistler and are now the standard for elementary scale instruction. Presenting all the majorkeys up to four flats/sharps (and the relative minors) each unit also includes long tone and embouchure studies. Supplemental material includes comprehensive chromatic scales fingering and speed studies lip slurs (brass) andexercises to strengthen the upper register (woodwinds).

Six Pieces for Horn Violin and Piano by Hans Abrahamsen. Programme Note  My ’6 Pieces for horn violin and piano’ was written in 1984 as a commission from the Danish Radio for a concert where Ligeti’s Horn Trio should receive its Danish premiere played by Danish musicians. My trio is based on my work ’Studies for Piano’. While I wrote these studies I tried to ’conjure up’ instrumental parts inside the piano movement. When I received the commission for a horn trio I turned to six of the studies and deepened them by ’screening them’ so that their partsand moods appeared in a clearer way. Furthermore I changed the order of the movements so a new unity appeared beginning with a steadyly hesitating ’Serenade’ in slow-motion followed by the ’Arabesque’ which hardly gets started before it stops. Then ’Blues’ a melancholy melody and ’Marcia Funebre’ like a fossilized picture with a dramatic threatening outburst ending with a quiet but majestic melody in violin and horn a melody that disappears in the chords of the piano.
