The album contains original compositions and first publications as well as arrangements for organ and twelve pieces for communion in settings by Johann Sebastian Bach with melodies and texts appropriate to communion. The complete edition of Bunk's organ music comes to an end with the publication of volume VI which contains organ works of a primarily liturgical nature. Bridge’s early works those written before the first World War were more late Romantic in style warmly expansive than his mature works. The Adagio is a four-Voice fugue of poetic expressiveness that makes full use of the instrument’s tonal resources.British composer Frank Bridge was active in the early decades of the 20th century and was a highly respected conductor violist and teacher his sole composition student having been Benjamin Britten. Britten honoured his former teacher in his work Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge based on a theme from one of Bridge’s pieces for String quartet.

Lemare’s compositions are uneven in quality but the best are still active in the repertoire. The Toccata di Concerto is certainly full of fireworks and has the capacity to show the abilities of a great Organ. The upper parts have plenty of French toccata style but the theme in the pedals gives the piece substance as does the romantic chromatic interlude in the middle of the work.Organ virtuoso and composer Edwin Lemare was the world’s highest-paid Organist at the height of his career in the early 1900’s drawing bravos from ctritics and the crowds who queued around the block to hear this most famous of Organists. After having served as a church Organist for a relativelyshort period he began the life of a travelling recitalist beginning with a hundred-recital tour of the USA and Canada in 1900 a career that continued until the stock market crash of 1929. Lemare was also virtuosic in his ability to transcribe great Orchestral works for the Organ allowing audiences in those less urban times to hear works played live that they might have heard no other way.

When Reubke died in 1858 at the age of only 24 his achievements included two monumental works (a Piano sonata and an Organ sonata) and a few smaller compositions including a Trio for Organ. This Urtext edition brings together the two Organ works in a new edition: the Organ sonata is also known by the title of the 94th Psalm whose words inspired its content. The Sonata whose style and virtuosity show the influence of Liszt is one of the greatest Organ works of the whole Romantic period. The Trio a musically charming but technically less demanding piece should represent a welcome addition to the teaching repertoire forOrgan. The only original documents remaining for these works are the first editions. In this new edition we have attempted to correct obvious mistakes in the first impression and to offer cautious suggestions for improvements in dubious instances.

While Darke composed extensively for Choir and Organ he wrote many fewer works for solo Organ. The first of the set St Peter dedicated to Herbert Howells is the best known of the three atmospheric and improvisational and Orchestral in style. The second prelude a fantasia on Darwell’s 148th is a virtuosic piece that retains its musical integrity. The final on a theme by Tallis begins by tranquilly setting out its theme before moving into romantic Orchestral style. Harold E. Darke was an English composer and Organist of international renown. In 1916 he established the Monday lunchtime Organ recitals at St Michael’s Cornhillwhich continue to this day the longest-running such series in the world. His setting of Christina Rosetti’s poem In the Bleak Midwinter created a melody and lilting Organ accompaniment that have never fallen from favour. It is regarded as one of the greatest Christmas carols and is still sung at the service of Nine Lessons and Carols.
